Monday Wrap: Albright Rips Gullit & Other Gossip

19

*While I've been columnizing much of the day, plenty of other stuff is going on in the soccer world with one highlight being former Galaxy defender Chris Albright slamming departed Galaxy Coach Ruud Gullit at SI.com:

"My thought was that he'd be gone by midway through this year - I thought that two days after meeting him," said the 29-year-old defender, who was part of the Galaxy squad that made preseason trips to Australia and New Zealand.

Photo of the Day: Freddy Adu Unveiled at Monaco

Kid looks good in red right? Loads of sponsors on that jersey though; I know they are found of their auto racing in Monaco so perhaps the completely-out-of-control-sponsorship mentality has made the jump to the soccer world over there. I'm all for making that paper, but five logo's on the front of the kit is just a bit cluttered. Click to continue reading...

Where to watch the EPL in the Triangle

0
With the English Premier League season starting this weekend, you might be asking yourself where a good place to catch an EPL game with a few other soccer fans might be. While I must admit that my living room sofa and a DirecTV setup that gets Setanta, FSC, and GolTV keeps me fairly satisfied, every now and then I like to catch a game with other footy fans at the different bars around the Triangle. Lehmann to retire from Germany?

0
Oh man, this guy is great for the blogs. Crazy, but talented enough to stay in the lineup.

Remember when he said the Euro final was fixed?

Anyways, if anyone in the soccer world is gonna come out of retirement after a couple months, it's probably this guy. Click to continue reading...

Azz...zzz...urri News

A lot of stuff seems to be going on in the soccer world. Trades, little friendly tourneys(see below for more on that), injuries... yet nothing seems to be happening with national teams. Or at least, not with Italy. So I didn't post yesterday because, well, there was nothing to post about. Click to continue reading...

West Ham/Columbus Skirmish...

3
Here's a bit of video that's got the local soccer world all abuzz at the moment. According the a Crew press release, three West Ham fans found their way into the wrong part of the stadium at halftime. Cops intervened and a few home fans threw themselves into the mix. Handbags really. Read the press release here. Click to continue reading...

Arsenal Has Become a Selling Club

Every day, I start off the morning surfing around various sites and checking for interesting stories or issues relating to, most often, the Premiership. You all know by now how much I despise the summer (in the soccer world, that is, not in real life) and the gossip used as filler to pass the time until August, when the new season kicks off. Monday Ticker: Chelsea deny Kaka bid, Makelele to PSG and the Olympic call-up mess

1

It was an interesting weekend in the soccer world to say the least.

From the New England Revolution's flight to remember, to the big fan brawl at the Columbus Crew-West Ham friendly, there was plenty of off-field activity to talk about. Fortunately, there was also some on-field stuff to talk about as well, including the completion of SuperLiga group play and the MLS schedule, which finished with five ties (yes, all five games this week finished tied).

reyna retires; fans thought he already was

0
as the news broke across the american soccer world last night, the complete reshaping of the new york red bulls was put into the bright lights.

with the addition of at least 3 new players (possibly 4) into the starting line-up as early as this saturday (depending on visa issues), the departure last month of jozy, and now the departure of claudio, the new york red bulls are a very different team than that which opened the season. Save Cristiano Ronaldo

3

The fashion experts in the soccer world aren't impressed with the hairshirt Cristiano Ronaldo has donned as he agitates to move away from Manchester United.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter knitted that hairshirt with his "modern-day slavery" comparison, which Ives Galarcep calls "essentially putting his foot in his mouth for about the 20,000th time during his reign as FIFA president.

Morning Ticker: FIFA's Plan B for 2010, Blatter enters Cristiano Ronaldo fray and Barca signs Hleb

Sepp Blatter didn't really surprise anybody when he said he had a back-up plan in case South Africa could not host the 2010 World Cup, but when the FIFA president came out and said he had three countries lined up as potential replacements, you couldn't help but wonder if FIFA might be ready to pull the plug on South Africa being the host.

The Quiet Season

1
Aside from the swirling mass of journalist- and blogger-fabricated rumors swirling the Internet (Ronaldinho to sign with the LA Galaxy? Come on!), there is little going on in the football/soccer world. And to that I say, thank goodness!

I love the game as much (if not more) than the next fanatic, but after a string of USA friendlies at the beginning of June, then three weeks of non-stop Euro 2008 action and 2010 World Cup qualifiers on top of all of that, I need a breather. Click to continue reading...

Happy 4th of July!

1
I'd like to wish everyone here in the States a happy, and most importantly, safe, Independence Day.

Even though Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, it wasn't until two days later that Thomas Jefferson's wording in the document itself was approved. It also wasn't actually signed by most delegates until August 2, but for some reason, we've chosen to commemorate American independence on the 4th of July. Click to continue reading...

Happy 4th of July from SBI

0

Good morning folks. It's the 4th of July, which means hitting the beach or pool, firing up the grill and enjoying some time off and relaxing (for some of us).

For those of you who still need a soccer fix, don't worry. I'll look to check in with a few posts today before I take off for Florida (yes, it's vacation time for me).

Grahame Jones with Sunil Gulati
Nick Green spells out the dire situation for journalists, and specifically those who cover soccer, these days. As Nick mentions, the latest cuts at the LA Times put Grahame Jones at risk.
It's hard to explain what Grahame means to the local press corps. He's seen it all, basically. Click to continue reading...

All hail the reign of Spain and their beautiful game

1
So dreams can come true. Even Spanish footballing ones. And they can even come true in a wondrous way.

The Cava is still flowing and rightly so. In winning Euro 2008, Spain ended a quest for silverware that at 44 years' length, two more than England's, had defied all sense of fairness or logic. Click to continue reading...
