Last weekend, it was all about goals. This past weekend, it was assists.
Three different Americans set up goals for their respective clubs, including U.S. Men's National Team players Fabian Johnson and Sacha Kljestan. Johnson notched his second assist of the Bundesliga campaign by delivering a low pass from the left flank for the early opener in Hoffenheim's 3-2 win over Schalke, while Kljestan hit a simple but effective pass to a teammate in Anderlecht's 4-1 win against Mechelen.
In our recaps of Seattle Sounders FC's Academy Alumni the focus was primarily on the players
within the NCAA system. Players like Sean Okoli (second leading scorer on the U18s in 2010/11),
Deandre Yedlin and Nick Palodichuk are following typical American collegiate paths. Yedlin and
Okoli even got picked for the recent United States U-20 path.
Jozy Altidore simply continues to add to the argument that he is the most in-form American right now.
Altidore scored his latest goal for AZ Alkmaar on Saturday, netting the club's first goal in a 2-2 draw against Roda JC Kerkrade. The goal was Altidore's 16th in the Eredivisie and 21st in all competitions this season and it put him two behind the Eredivisie's leading goal-scorer, Vitesse forward Wilfried Bony.
It's not over quite yet, but Wednesday night action in Europe has already brought us a trio of American goal clips to await. Timothy Chandler hit a late consolation in FC Nürnberg's loss at Hannover 96, Fabian Johnson the capper in Hoffenheim's win at Stuttgart and Charles Kazlauskas the opener as Helmond Sport fell on PK's in the KNVB Cup.
Add Andrew Wooten to the list of young U.S. internationals who will have their club futures
secured for the next few years.
Wooten, a German-American forward who was part of the U.S. Under-23 player pool leading up to
Olympic qualifying, will sign his first professional contract, a three-year-deal, with FC
Kaiserslautern this week, according to reports out of Germany.
Fabian Johnson did something on Wednesday that he has not done much of in his career: He scored
a goal.
The U.S. men's national team midfielder/defender contributed to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's lopsided
victory over Hamburg SV on Wednesday, scoring the third goal in a 4-0 win.
All American eyes Friday are on Goodison Park, where Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey do battle
in Everton and Fulham's FA Cup match, but there's another game in Europe that is of importance to
Americans abroad as well.
Timmy Chandler's FC Nurnberg and Steve Cherundolo's Hannover 96 are slated to go up against one
another in a Bundesliga match that should be featuring the present and future of U.
Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey have shared plenty of moments throughout their careers as the
top two attacking threats of the U.S. men's national team, but they will not be celebrating
together on Friday.
The two American stars are set to face off for the first time since 2006 when Everton and Fulham
do battle in the fourth round of the FA Cup (3pm, Fox Soccer Channel).
The winter transfer window closed this past Tuesday, and a pair of Americans who secured moves
during it will be looking to make their debuts this weekend.
George John and Robbie Rogers could make their first appearances abroad for West Ham United and
Leeds United, respectively, as the Championship gets back into a full weekend swing.
The departure of Mohamed Zidan from Borussia Dortmund has opened the door of opportunity forÂ
U.S. Under-23 national team forward Terrence Boyd.
With Zidan having moved to Mainz during the transfer window, Boyd and fellow youngster Marvin
Duksch have been summoned from their respective reserve teams by head coach Jurgen Klopp.
It has been almost a year since Timmy Chandler last played for the U.S. men's national team and
although he has turned down a number of recent call-ups due to injuries or fatigue, the talented
youngster insists he is still open to representing the United States in the near future.
Just a few things I caught in my daily crawl around the series of tubes that is the interwebs ...
The Good FC Nurnberg signed Timothy Chandler to a two-year extension. The deal has him all signed
up to be there until the summer of 2015, but I guess we'll see about that. As we well know,
Chandler had his fair share of suitor(s), though his loyalty to the club that gave him his
Bundesliga debut

One day into training with FC Nurnberg, Omar Gonzalez has torn his ACL. The injury was sustained in
training after a collision with fellow American Timmy Chandler. Gonzalez will now return to the
Galaxy to undergo treatment. The typical recovery time for an ACL tear is 4-6 months depending on
treatment and the athlete in question.
In his first practice session with FC Nurnberg, Omar Gonzalez ruptured the ACL in his left knee.
What was first thought to be a minor injury will end up sidelining the USMNT defender for months.
Two Americans are still in contention for the FA Cup, and both will try and punch their tickets
to the tournament final against some of the Premiership's most talented teams.
Tim Howard and Brad Friedel are a step away from playing for some hardware, but respective
matches against Chelsea and Liverpool await.
Timothy Chandler and FC Nurnberg put on a heroic defensive effort to hold German heavyweights FC
Bayern at bay, but luck was not on their side as they fell to a late Arjen goal for their fourth
straight loss.
