Championship: Brighton ‘Keeper David Stockdale Scores Two Almost Identical Own-Goals In Space Of 20 Minutes (Video)

Who Ate All the Pies at related • 0 views

Brighton missed out on the chance to clinch the Championship title on Friday night after slumping to a 2-0 defeat against Norwich at Carrow Road.

It proved to be a naffold night for Seagulls goalkeeper David Stockdale who technically scored both of Norwich's goals, and all in the space of 20 first-half minutes.

11 Lions - England Footy at related • 0 views

Over the next five days England have two very important games that will go a long way to resolving what you'll be doing and where you'll be doing it next Summer. The answer we're all hoping for is ‘watching England playing in Euro 2012' regardless of whether that's in the Ukraine and Poland, in an Irish pub somewhere in the Med or (in my case) the biennial ritual hiding behind the sofa with the curtains drawn whilst swearing your head off and trying not to scare the neighbours.

Fulham

Fulham, Moneyball, David Stockdale, John Terry, and why I’m more positive now

With the disappointing news that David Stockdale's off it becomes clear that this just isn't about dead wood.

Here are the positives around Stockdale:

- we got him when he was nobody. It's nice to see young players come through.
- he's a good player. England squad, remember?
- he seems like a good egg.

Fulham 0-3 Spurs

Goals change games, don't they? Take the three goals away and you might call it an evenish contest. But of course you can't take the three goals away, much as you might like to.

What a farce they all were. Sandro, dawdling just inside his own half, decides to have a dig. You'd say it was an insult to Mark Schwarzer, except the shot went in, swerving nastily and hopping over his hands.

Some thoughts

Apologies for lack of posting. For one thing there doesn't seem much concrete to talk about: will they, won't they, etc... For another our increasingly antiquated work IT setup has made it all but impossible for me to post from there. No, don't get me wrong, I work hard, honest, just that I used to do a lot of writing first thing in the morning or at lunchtime.

Season previews always seem so half empty. Not because the writers are lazy (okay, some are) but because there's always that spectre of "well, shit can get real around the transfer deadline, so, here's some vague material that should be read skeptically. Enjoy!"

With that in mind, here's my preview.

Lately I've been listening to WNYC's wonderful RadioLab show, and recently came upon "The Loneliness of the Goalkeeper" episode. Turns out it was originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4, so you Brits may have already heard it before. (And here I was hoping to break new ground.)

Fulham 2-1 Arsenal

Yes!

One of those epic nights by the Thames, an early fluke from the opposition setting up game-long persuit of justice.

That justice came with a late 1-2 from Sidwell and, thrillingly, Zamora, both goals coming after right-back Djourou had been belatedly dismissed. This red card changed the dynamic: we were looking at an unfortunate defeat until then.

Will need to step up tonight

What a wonderful night of football yesterday was, if only for the one game which mattered. Nicklas Bendtner did us no favour as he squandered an early chance to put his team ahead but Sunderland won it right at the death to beat Roberto Mancini's Manchester City.

Calming it down: wasted goal kicks

One of the things that's surprised me this year is David Stockdale's distribution. Earlier in his Fulham career he seemed to be clearly better than Mark Schwarzer in this area. Now? Not so sure.

Take yesterday:

Which looks unfortunate: 31 possession concessions there (and I accept that we may have won a bit of second ball there, but on past form, probably not much, and not enough to justify just giving the ball back like that).

Norwich 1-1 Fulham

Norwich should not be underestimated, a good team with a good manager and we should have expected a tricky game. In the end we got one, Norwich's assortment of Russells and Bradleys and Wesleys eventually powering their team to a well deserved equaliser in stoppage time. Another late goal?

Premier League's Forgotten Men Emerges Impressively During Christmas

The Christmas fixtures brought about a change in team line ups. Clubs which could afford to rest key players relied on their bench to tide them over this hectic time. This meant first team starts for a trio of Premier League superstars who have somewhat faded from this season's football action.

Chelsea 1-1 Fulham: Stockdale stormer, lack of cutting edge foil Blues

The Offside - Chelsea at related • 0 views

A genuinely poor performance it was not. It was, however, a rather terrible result.

A myriad of culpable parties

Chelsea again surrender a lead despite being in a position to record a comfortable win. First Wigan, and now Fulham. What the hell. More bemusing, the fact that this latest setback arrived just days after we put in an excellent shift at White Hart Lane in a game we easily could have won.

No Christmas Glory for Chelsea

Chelsea failed to give a special Christmas treat for their fans as Andre Villas-Boas' team only picked up a draw against Fulham at Stamford Bridge, making it their third 1-1 result in a row.

Juan Mata's goal wasn't enough to secure all three points for the Blues as their poor performance on the day was punished by Clint Dempsey, who netted the away side's equalizer.

Playing in a difficult ground, Man United players surprisingly demolished the North London outfit by scoring five goals without receiving any reply from the home side.

David Stockdale. After all the talk of Schwarzer leaving it was a mighty relief to find that we'd got a readymade replacement already in the ranks.

Saying goodbye to 2011/2012

The Diary of a Tractor Girl at related • 0 views
With West Ham's promotion to the Premier League yesterday, the 2011/2012 Championship season finally came to an end. Despite having had three weeks to mull over Ipswich Town's year, I still haven't come to a conclusion on how I feel about it. It's been disappointing, that much is clear. But even the pessimistic of fans would be hard pressed to deny that we (when I say we I man Paul Jewell) have learnt a few lessons and the side HAS progressed form this time 12 months ago.

How many emotions can one football team make you feel just three months into the season?

Elation: Check (Bristol Away)
Anger: Check (Peterborough Away)
Pride: Check (Coventry at Home)
Hope: Check (West Ham Away)
A little bit Lucky: Check (Portsmouth at Home)

Pure Frustration: Check (Millwall Away)

August's trip to Peterborough was devastating because it highlighted what a mess the side were in at the time.

Where do Town go from here?

The Ipswich Town team seemed to take a while to come out of the dressing room on Saturday evening: what do you think Paul Jewell was saying?

If you were him, what on earth would you have said?

Having not made it to Portman Road this season, this weekend was the first chance I've had to see the rapidly self-destructing side for myself.

Never played a minute for the first team, but was on the bench for those memorable wins over Shaktar, Juventus; a few other random Europa Games. Had a pretty productive spell at MK Dons the second-half of last season, and even played a part in the Dons' playoff run.

No Ferdinand Or Gerrard In England Squad

England will head into their Euro 2012 showdown with Montenegro without two of their most experienced players after Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard were both left out of Fabio Capello's squad.

The Three Lions need a draw in Podgorica on Friday to book their place at next summer's European Championship finals, and Capello has decided they can achieve that mission without two men who have amassed a combined total of 167 caps.

I don't think there was a lot between them. Stekelenburg made that howler against Sunderland but had generally performed well for us.

True grit

Winning football is about making the best use of available resources. We actually have a fine squad. Here is how to use it successfully.

After much deep thinking it seems to me that grit, determination and a willingness to get muddy are what's missing. There is no room in our team for people who don't care, or who are pansies.

Two sets of fairly gifted attackers: one set made space and moved the ball like lightning, the other kept on trying to walk the ball through the most crowded area of the pitch. The game finished 5-0.

We may feel aggrieved at the scoreline, which did flatter United slightly, but our attacking play, though exciting, was not very bright.
