Sheffield United have announced that they plan to name a stand at Brammall Lane in honour of
Sheffield's very own Olympic heptathlon gold medalist, Jessica Ennis.
The stand in question is the Bramall Lane Stand, which the club will rechristen 'The Jessica
Ennis Stand' ("two tickets in the Lower Ennis please")Â before this Saturday's League One game
against Bournemouth.
When Mike Ashley honored the 120-year heritage of St James' Park by changing its name to the
Sports Direct Arena in February this year, a number of Magpies fans were angered by the
sportswear-selling antics of their club owner.
Supporter Michal Atkinson was so angry that he spray-painted "St James" on the wall where the
stadium's famous moniker was once emblazoned.
How are the supporters of a football club to judge a new owner? Perhaps the answer to that is
the question of how desperate for a new owner they are, but even in the most extreme of
circumstances, one common theme of recent years has been that supporters have been more prepared to
carry out their own due diligence on those that turn up, out of the blue, promising to repair their
clubs.
Pre-season previews used to be easy. Analyse the players, add the manager's likely tactics,
stir in a liberal dose of unsubstantiated optimism masquerading as hitherto unfilled potential and
there you have it. Swift appraisal of a few rivals, think of a possible final finishing position
then go two places higher and pretend you know what you are talking about.
Spain's European championship title defense is going to be a bit more challenging, as a vital
component to its back line is unlikely to be available for the world's No. 1-ranked team.
Carles Puyol is doubtful for this summer's tournament after Barcelona announced that their
captain and 34-year-old centerback requires arthroscopic knee surgery that will sideline him for
around the next six weeks.
Paris Saint-Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed his interest in signing Liverpool striker
Luis Suarez.
It was reported in February that the Ligue 1 giants were open to offering the Uruguay international
a route out of England following his eight-game ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender
Patrice Evra.

Rangers have a meeting with the league winners at Celtic Park on Sunday, which makes the news of
striker Kyle Lafferty's two week suspension after a reported bust up with manager Ally McCoist all
the more intriguing.
A period of turmoil in the history of one of Englands oldest clubs which began with the untimely
death of the man that had previously rescued it from the brink of extinction, Nigel Doughty, moved
towards a new beginning this week with the announcement that Nottingham Forest twice champions of
Europe in an altogether more innocent age had been bought out by a family from Kuwait.
Chelsea's Summer 2012 Transfer Targets - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
Chelsea resurgence under Roberto Di-Matteo has been truly impressive this season. However, he
has inherited a squad whose quality and age has been questioned. Providing the Italian manager
keeps the Chelsea job on a permanent basis, I'm sure he'll make quite a few changes in summer to
re-invent the team as ‘his' side.
Everyday, a football club owner falls into the media's cross hairs for some reason or another.
One of the common gripes is that Owen Owner is a no good corporate raider. Without a doubt, some
investment banks and American executives fit this Barbarians at the Gate caricature
perfectly. We can all thank our lucky stars that Liverpool ran out of town Gillete and Hicks before
administration entered the equation.
Fresh from scoring his 100th Premier League goal for Chelsea against Stoke at the weekend, there is
yet more speculation about Didier in the press. Why is it when players leave the club, they just
can't help themselves but to start rumours and speculation when if they say these people are
"friends" they should just let them concentrate on the rest of the season!
So, Scottish venture capitalist Craig Whyte is not fit and proper to be a football club owner
and director. That is amazing. I'll be avoiding feathers for a few days, that's for sure, because
you could knock me down with even one. In one sense, and possibly two senses, the Scottish Football
Association's declaration that Whyte "is not considered a fit and proper person to hold a position
within Association Football" is amazing.
From Barcelona to Manchester United, there has never been a shortage of interest in Frank
Lampard's services over the years as the Chelsea midfielder continues to age brilliantly.
But despite the continuation of his superb form for the Blues, the fact remains that Lampard is
approaching his 34th birthday and as many in Europe will say, it is ideal for him to look overseas
for a more lucrative opportunity at this stage of his career.
According to the Nike Store, Inter Milan's new away kit "honors" the team with "bold team colors
and symbols." Fans of the Serie A champions, however, are inclined to disagree, as they can't help
but notice that it's almost exactly the same hue worn by fierce rivals AC Milan.
The Curva Nord  — the collective of Internazionale's die-hard fans and ultras — are so
displeased with the new strip that a representative has written to club owner and president Massimo
Moratti to explain their intention to boycott it.
Former AC Milan player Mark Hateley has urged Liverpool's Andy Carroll to consider quitting Anfield
for a move abroad.
Speaking to talkSPORT, ex-Rossoneri striker Hateley believes that Carroll would become a better
all-round player if he switched leagues, following suggestions that Milan could well be interested
in him.
AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani says the club will not make any further signings this
summer, despite being linked to Liverpool's Andy Carroll.
Pier Silvio Berlusconi, son of club owner Silvio Berlusconi, had acknowledged that he would love to
bring the 23-year-old to the San Siro - having seen him at Euro 2012.
We all knew it was going to happen since this morning, but the 2:30 press conference made it
official: the Portland Timbers have fired John Spencer, the team's first coach of the MLS era.
Gavin Wilkinson will serve as interim coach until the end of the season. Club owner Merritt Paulson
and General Manager, Technical Director and Interim Head Coach Gavin Wilkinson made the
announcement jointly at Jeld Wen Field today.
Eric Wynalda's quest to break into the professional American soccer coaching ranks has led him
to Atlanta, where he has been hired to be the new interim head coach of the NASL's Silverbacks.
Atlanta announced the hiring on Monday morning, with Wynalda taking over for fired head coach
Alex Pineda-Chacon.
This does not look good for Roberto Di Matteo's chances of staying on at Chelsea, at least as
manager. Days after winning the most coveted prize a European club can hope to get and adding the
oldest football trophy in the world to that bag, the club owner and the technical director are the
ones calling the shots on the transfers.
My knowledge of the insolvency practice profession is limited to my football writing
experiences, gleaned from research into articles on this and other sites. As a result, I have come
to know of 'gentlemen' such as Gerald Krasner, Andrew Andronikou and Brendan Guilfoyle. And, as a
result of that, my opinion of the insolvency practice profession is not high.
Chicago Fire Soccer Club owner Andrew Hauptman opened up to a small group of reporters following
Thursday's partnership announcement at Quaker Plaza. Despite the fact that all of his official
business was already taken care of, Hauptman was still around after the media had interviewed
players, Frank Klopas, and MLS personnel.
Que triste! It isn't a good week for fans of the US Women's Professional Soccer (WPS)
league. The board announced it would be "suspending play" this year due to complex legal issues
involving a former club owner. This matters because some of the world's best female players ply
their trade there including Abby Wambach,Marta, Alex Morgan and
Hope Solo.
After working USSF to be sanctioned for 2012 despite not meeting the requisite requirements, the
Women's Professional Soccer League (WPS) suspended operations today for the 2012 season.
The main culprit per league messaging: the mounting legal bills of attempting to finally close
the Dan Borislow ownership situation.
It's fair to say that footballers are rather fond of a flash motor, a penchant Pies have already
featured today. And it's this love of high-end cars which Doncaster Rovers Chairman John Ryan is
hoping will spur attacking midfielder Kyle Bennett on to great things this season.
The dismissal of Harry Redknapp and the new appointment of Andre Villas-Boas supposedly will usher
in a new era for Tottenham Hotspur. Â Both club owner Joe Lewis but chiefly chairman Daniel Levy
state they have a new and exciting vision ...

WASHINGTON -- Upon their first public remarks after becoming major investors in
D.C. United, the club's two newest owners wasted no time in addressing the one thing that the
club's supporters have been eagerly and patiently waiting to have resolved: A new stadium.
You can say what you like about Scottish media coverage of Rangers' financial crisis but you're
certainly spoilt for choice. Unfortunately, that choice is all-too-often between parallel
universes, with a tangential universe thrown in every time club owner Craig Whyte is within range
of a microphone (Whyte's common criticism of HMRC as "living on a different planet to the rest of
us" is top-of-the-range irony, I'm sure you'll agree.
Setting the tone for things to come, how opportunistically great is this Kickette Army soldier
girl's epic photobomb?
Saturday
- Joining the illustrious cast of "WAG: The Musicial" is Michael Chopra's ex. You remember them,
Kickettes? They were the couple who fought out the demise of their brief marriage via Facebook.
It may have taken longer than they would have liked, but the San Jose Earthquakes will finally
be getting a soccer-specific stadium to call their own.
At a public hearing inside a packed San Jose City Hall's council chamber late on Wednesday
night, the San Jose Planning Commission voted 6-0 to deny an appeal against the construction of a
soccer-specific stadium.
On Thursday, Newcastle took a crowbar to the St. James' Park lettering outside their stadium to
make way for the Sports Direct Arena moniker they gave it back in November (free of charge!). A
name change made to try and attract a corporate sponsor who isn't club owner Mike Ashley and will
actually pay for the privilege.
A charity donation website has raised more than £1000 in memory of former chairman and club owner
Nigel Doughty since it was started this morning [...]
I don't know how long Geylang United have worn green. Certainly for me I have always identified
them as the team in green. Green befits them. So why change the colour to maroon for the new
season? Apparently the club consulted with management and the Singapore FA before going ahead with
the change.
