The Black-and-Red are having a tough season, but here's something to be proud of.

Confirming a rumor from earlier today, D.C. United center back Steve Birnbaum has been named to the starting lineup for the United States in their crucial World Cup qualifier versus Guatemala tonight. The 25 year old Birnbaum has earned 3 previous caps, but this will be his first competitive outing for the USMNT.

The US is just one game away from qualifying for Rio 2016.

Unlike the senior team, the United States under-23s went on the road to deal with a difficult atmosphere and actually got the job done, escaping Barranquilla with a precious 1-1 draw against Colombia. That away goal means a win on home soil, or even a 0-0 draw, will send the US to the Olympics over the favored Cafeteros.

In which we sort things out from the rubble.

D.C. United was facing an FC Dallas team Saturday that was missing most of its defense yet still retained its offense. In an attempt to jumpstart the productivity of some starters there was some minor juggling, but the resulting 3-0 loss left a lot of salt to go with some sour.

Two teams that might be a bit frustrated will look for their first win of 2016 today in Massachusetts.

For D.C. United, the 2016 season has gotten off to a frustrating start. A good effort in Mexico was thrown away in the final 20 minutes, while letting Queretaro score in the 4th minute settled their CONCACAF Champions League affairs in an unfortunate manner.

An evolving United side takes on the Revs today in Foxborough.

There's some good news for D.C. United heading into their game today against the New England Revolution. The Black-and-Red have gone 3W-1D-1L against the Revs over the past 2 seasons, including a playoff win last October. The games have all been close - United's 2-0 win in early 2014 was the only game that wasn't a one-goal win or a draw - but United seems to have a grasp on how to slow down the high-flying Revolution.

First, Queretaro is difficult to get to from a travel perspective, at least if you don't live in either Dallas or Houston.

I think it's time to dispense with some myths.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting pretty tired of the "D.C. sucks" meme. If it's not Grant Wahl peddling the narrative, it's Alexi Lalas acting on Soccer Morning like D.C. United doesn't exist until the new stadium is built. If it's not a site literally calling United a red-headed step child, it's MLS Extra Time questioning whether Ben Olsen will actually play Luciano Acosta - apparently because Lucho is a technical player and therefore the kind of player that Ben Olsen inherently will not play - never mind that Acosta has appeared in 100% of the club's games so far this season.
