Osvaldo Alonso, Marco Pappa, Brad Evans, and Leo Gonzalez are all question marks at this point.
Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid told reporters today that he couldn't give any real injury updates, but he did clarify that Osvaldo Alonso was battling with a groin injury that kept him out of the matchday squad against the LA Galaxy on Wednesday.
It's that time of year when LikkitP is working overtime to pump out goose-bump inducing hype trailers and fresh on the heels of "Our Force Awakens" comes "Stand With Us." This is an homage to one of the early "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" teaser trailers. Enjoy:
The first leg of the Western Conference Semifinal against FC Dallas is scheduled for Sunday at 6:30 p.
In all the attention being paid to Erik Friberg's winner on Wednesday, it was pretty easy to overlook the Seattle Sounders' other goals. We know that Clint Dempsey's was mainly the product of an obvious mistake. And there were a lot of people who wanted to discount Nelson Haedo Valdez's goal as simply the product of a miscommunication between Steven Gerrard and Donovan Ricketts.
The Western Conference Semi-Final features the young, counter-attacking FCD and Seattle's older precision strike tandem of Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins. FoxSports 1 is carrying the match in the USA, with a start time of 6:30 PM. This is a two-leg aggregate series. Sounders FC owned the regular season
It took 120 minutes, plus 11 rounds of penalty kicks but the Seattle Sounders' Western Conference semifinal opponent is finally set.
It should not come as a surprise that an epic MLS Cup Playoffs match between the LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders set a record for most watched local broadcast. The surprise is that it did so on a night when the team was at home with nearly 40,000 in the stands, and up against the World Series on Fox and the GOP debate on CNBC.
Tacoma Stars players prepare for the 2015/16 MASL season near Mt. Rainier, because of course they do.
The Tacoma Stars are preparing to launch their 2015/16 Major Arena Soccer League season at ShoWare Center on Friday, November 6th. The team has already held 2 intra-squad scrimmages at the Tacoma Soccer Center, so what more could they do to get ready for the season to begin?
Portland squeak past Sporting, Montreal roll through Toronto, and NYCFC is wasting no time in courting a big-name coach.
MLS Cup Playoffs
The Seattle Sounders learned their Western Conference Semifinal schedule and opponent last night, after a pretty crazy contest between Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers ended with the opposing keepers trading kicks from the penalty spot.
This is certainly a tough game to rate. A nerve-wracking match where the Sounders gave up two goals early and had other scary moments, but looked to be more in control for the majority of the 90-odd minutes. Not to mention players changing position, early exits and limited performances due to injury, etc.
It took 120 minutes, plus 11 rounds of penalty kicks but the Seattle Sounders' Western Conference semifinal opponent is finally set. With the Portland Timbers' win over Sporting Kansas City on Thursday, that means the Sounders are the lowest remaining seed and will face FC Dallas. The first leg is scheduled for a 6:30 p.
After an amazing MLS Wednesday, Thursday's playoff knockout round double header has a lot to live up to. Three Big Storylines, Searching for Erik Friberg, From a Sounders Point of View and TV & Streaming Listings. Here is your MLS Playoff Knockout Round Gamethread
Three Big Storylines:
- Oh Canada.
Hopefully you've seen the shortened version of this video that we played during #yachtcon15. Or maybe you heard the extended version on the podcast. Well, now you get to see the extended interview in video form. We tossed some outtakes in at the end. Hope you enjoy. At the very least, you'll get a longer look at Brad Evans' beautiful mug.
We love Ross Fletcher. His call on Erik Friberg's winning goal was fantastic. But I gotta admit that I'm a sucker for the excitement of a Spanish-language golazo. And with Wednesday's game being aired on UniMas, they definitely delivered:
Maybe I'm a sucker but love the Spanish-language call on @friberg28's goal https://t.
What we love about LevyFilms' stuff is not just that it's gorgeous. We love the details you catch when you see the game from a different angle and slowed down. Erik Friberg's goal is no different.
The first thing you'll notice is that Donovan Ricketts slipped because he stepped on Nelson Haedo Valdez's foot.
During the next international break, Seattle Sounders FC forward Obafemi Martins will head to Swaziland and Nigeria as he represents his nation in World Cup Qualifying for the first time since March 2013. Nigeria manager Sunday Oliseh selected just turned 31-year-old player to this round of CAF qualifiers.
This is your definitive Seattle Sounders defeating LA Galaxy recap, except it's not that definitive and it comes with more gifs than normal. Load times may vary.
Quick, what's the best way to exorcise demons? Why, short of having Max von Sydow on hand, you just punch those demons in the mouth, which is exactly what the Seattle Sounders did to the LA Galaxy last night.
In a match that probably aged many Seattle fans by at least a few weeks, the Sounders emerged victorious from a playoff matchup with LA Galaxy for the first time. Coach Sigi Schmid and the players confirm in their quotes what was evident on the field: This game required tactical decisions on the fly, and some players had to make sacrifices to give their squad the best chance at victory.
Two knockout matches down, two to go in MLS, but the only question anyone cares about is this: Will David Beckham come out of retirement to play with Zlatan?
Did you know that Friberg doesn't speak Spanish? This was awkwardly pointed out in his post-game interview on Unimas. Luckily, one doesn't need to speak Spanish in order to recognize the importance of tacos.
Only a minute or two after Gyasi Zardes equalized for the LA Galaxy, the Seattle Sounders appeared to storm back into the lead. Andreas Ivanschitz picked up what appeared to be a loose ball, dribbled in and scored with a shot off the far post. Referee Jair Marrufo even pointed to the center circle, indicating it was a good goal.
After a less-than-eventful stretch since the first bonkers 20 minutes, Erik Friberg finally puts the Sounders ahead of the Galaxy with well-taken striker following a bit of pinball in front of goal.
Just because the Seattle Sounders have already given up two goals, don't let anyone tell you that Stefan Frei had a rough game. If they go onto to eliminate the Galaxy, his play will be a major reason why with this save standing up as possibly the biggest of the game.
Gyasi Zardes, who already had one goal, get in all alone, but Frei makes a lunging save to his right to palm it away and keep the Sounders' lead intact.
Erik Friberg played the hero, getting a second-half goal to allow Sounders to eliminate Galaxy for first time ever.
An absolutely wild match started with goals coming early and often, included two more goals being waved off and both sides having tons of chances to score more. But in the end, it was an Erik Friberg goal off a broken play that sent the Seattle Sounders to their first-ever playoff elimination of the LA Galaxy, a 3-2 win.
Erik Friberg scored the winning goal. The game was aired nationally on UniMas. So, it made sense that they might want to talk to him in the postgame. It didn't go so well.
.@friberg28 doesn't speak spanish pic.twitter.com/4SLqKn8mWp — Haunted Housé (@whoisjoserivera) October 29, 2015
As if he just wanted to prove his awesomeness, he sent out this tweet later in the night:
gracias por hoy!
Erik Friberg loves tacos. Or at least that's how the legend goes. So, you can bet that whenever he scores a game-winning goal in a playoff game you can expect something like this:
When @friberg28 scores a goal, you know what that means.
Paul Allen is a minority owner of the Seattle Sounders. There's a decent chance you don't know that because, well, he's basically invisible. He doesn't really talk about the team. He's not really involved in the club's management, now that the Seahawks and Sounders are separate business entities. It's not even clear if he regularly attends matches.
It's been awhile since LikkitP created one of his patented hype-video/trailers. But he's back just in time for an absolutely massive match on Wednesday. Taking his inspiration from Star Wars VIII: The Force Awakens, he offers us this:
In case you don't get the #NixTheSix reference, it's because the Galaxy or going for their sixth MLS Cup and using #RaceToSeis as their hashtag.
The 2015 Audi MLS Cup Western Conference Playoffs start tonight with the Seattle Sounders hosting the LA Galaxy.
The Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy have playoff history, and history has smiled brightly on LA. Tonight's game is an opportunity for Seattle to turn that history around.
This press release is from the club. It is vital information in order for you to enter tonight's match between the LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders FC. We are printing it in full so that you are able to enter CenturyLink Field with your printed ticket or with it downloaded to your phone. Your ticket will not be on your Matchpass.
Sounders dominate in final game of year - clinch Playoffs
There was a vocal minority that weren't happy with the Sounders dominating 3-1 victory on Sunday against Real Salt Lake, and their concerns were with possession and the fashion in which Seattle essentially killed off 70 minutes of soccer, but I have to disagree upon re watching.
This was a pretty weird year, right? Great start, crappy middle, uneven finish. Seattle Sounders fans aren't quite sure how to feel about the playoffs this year. Truth is, we're looking for any reason to be optimistic.
Well, consider this a positive sign: some little girl picked the Sounders to win MLS Cup.
He's the enemy tonight, at least hide your traitorous ways.
Look, I get it. Your family is from Liverpool and you were born bleeding red and white. Or you went there one summer and fell in love with Anfield while taking the tour. Or maybe you just like their colors. Whatever. Steven Gerrard is probably important to you.
If the LA Galaxy didn't exist the past seven years would be owned by Joe Roth's Seattle Sounders FC. Instead the SoCal-based controlling owner of Seattle's team looks outside and sees the team that is clearly the best from 2009 to the present. Three times Bruce Arena's club booted Sigi and the Sounders from the MLS Cup Playoffs.
We love Megan Rapinoe. Seriously, she's awesome. And it's not just because she's a badass player who embodies everything that people love about the United States women's national team, the Seattle Reign and athletes in general. She's also a really cool person.
So, this will come as little shock, but when the USWNT visited the White House on Tuesday, it was Rapinoe who kinda stole the show.
Forbes tells us that the improved attendance MLS saw this year oversells the league's growth. Forbes is wrong.
Forbes wants to make you a bit less excited about the improved attendance MLS saw this season. Allow me to explain why you should ignore their conclusions.
The article begins by arguing that this year's attendance might overstate the league's success, making 3 key points in support of this argument.
Let's face it: This was a weird year for the Seattle Sounders. They started hot, were abysmal over the summer and managed to finish on a 4-0-4 run despite some lackluster performances.
But as the dust settled, there was probably more to like about this season than you might have assumed. Here are some of the numbers:
On this very special edition of Nos Audietis, Jeremiah spends some quality time talking with Brad Evans. That's it. Just a conversation with Brad Evans. Which is awesome.
As part of YachtConXV, Jeremiah was able to record an interview with Seattle Sounders star Brad Evans. The discussion was wide ranging including topics involving Evans' career, the Sounders, the US National Team and more.
Sounders playoff game, the first of long MLS Cup run this season. The Sounders shouldn't be concerned, but they should be focused. They can take LA and they can definitely take them at home. The Rave Green will go through in this one because...well...continue reading, my friends.
Being the 4th seed has its perks, namely that Seattle get to host this match up.
The league's affiliation with the daily fantasy sports website has MLS staying silent during legal proceedings.
Here is ProSoccerTalk's 100 words or less snapshot of the Sounders 3-1 win over RSL on Sunday.
American Soccer Analysis came out with its MLS Cup Playoff projections, favoring the Sounders in their opening matchup with the Galaxy 57% of the time, but giving them just a 3.
UniMas will carry Wednesday's 7 PM match to the country, while JoeTV has the Seattle area broadcast. Seattle Sounders FC went (15-13-6 +8, 4th in West, 6th in Shield) and host the LA Galaxy (14-11-9 +10, 5th in West, 9th in Shield). LA owned the season series with a 1-2-0 +3 record, but is a woeful 2-9-6 -15 on the road.
Jordan Morris hasn't always put up the kind of statistics you might expect from a United States national team player whose still in college. But lately, he's been doing a lot more of this kind of stuff.
.@JmoSmooth13 " Six goals in his last seven games for @GoStanford.
How Seattle Sounders got to the playoffs (15-13-6 +8, 4th in West, 6th in Shield)
What's the outlook? When Seattle Sounders FC is on, they're on. The dynamic offense powered by Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins will produce goals. The defensive core of Osvaldo Alonso, Chad Marshall, Brad Evans and Stefan Frei ended the regular season tied with Vancouver for the best goals against average in the league.
Improved control of the central third on both sides of the ball fueled the Sounders' 3-1 win over RSL.
One of these games is not like the other, and the difference played a significant role in Seattle's dominant win over Real Salt Lake to close out the season.
The three chalkboard images from mlssoccer.
Seattle's list is a formality as we already know how their draft will turn out, but there are some interesting names elsewhere.
Today NWSL teams released their protected lists, which will determine which players are available to the Orlando Pride in their expansion draft next Monday. As was strongly hinted in pre-trade rumors, the Seattle Reign left Meghan Klingenberg unprotected after trading for her earlier in the day.
Sounders should have another full squad, if Osvaldo Alonso is cleared
The Seattle Sounders were right back onto the training pitch today, less than 12 hours after their 3-1 home win over Real Salt Lake. Coach Sigi Schmid admitted the advantage that the Sounders have over Wednesday's playoff opponent, the Los Angeles Galaxy, since the Sounders didn't have to travel for either of their matches while the Galaxy only got back to Los Angeles from Kansas City last night and will be flying to Seattle tomorrow.
12 Teams Enter. One Team Leaves. Which Team will be that Team? This will be your definitive guide to the 2015 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.
Oh my goodness me, the 2015 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs are upon us! Glory be! Doesn't that phrase just roll off the tongue? 2015 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. And wouldn't you know it, the Seattle Sounders are going to represent the #4 seed in the West.
Rate the players who sent RSL packing with an early onslaught of goals.
Quick! There's not much time. The Sounders have a long way to go to win their way through the dangerous Western Conference, and it all starts Wednesday. Leave no match unrated!
Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins were making things look easy, with help from their supporting cast.
Seattle Sounders FC took care of business in a big way Sunday. It was always a tough ask for a depleted and eliminated Real Salt Lake team to come to CenturyLink and find a result, but any hope they may have had was wiped out in the first 20 minutes through three daggers from Clint Dempsey and Marco Pappa.
If you missed YachtCon or just want to hear it all again, we present the full audio experience for you here.
Our first ever YachtCon XV was a smashing success, and for all of you who were unable to join us for the live event, we'd like to offer you the chance to listen back to our 197th, 198th, 199th AND 200th episode!
But she's probably never going to suit for the Reign.
The long-rumored trade of Meghan Klingenberg-to-Seattle Reign was finally made official on Monday. The Reign sent little-used midfielder Amber Brooks and the fifth pick in this year's NWSL Draft to the Houston Dynamo for Klingenberg and a conditional pick next year.
The price is high, but the cause is just right
The league took notice of Seattle Sounders' convincing 3-1 victory over an admittedly subpar Real Salt Lake, writing many nice things about the Rave Green.
Chad Marshall is auctioning off a game-worn jersey for a good cause. On top of helping a devastated family trying to put themselves together after losing one of their own to cancer, this is also possibly the last opportunity to grab one of the limited Halo 5 Guardians kits (did I mention it's signed by the team?
Clint Dempsey broke the deadlock early from an Obafemi Martins cross, thanks to a quick Sounders counterattack following a Real Salt Lake corner kick.
Marco Pappa scores a beautiful curler for the Sounders, assisted by Clint Dempsey only minutes after his opener.
Clint Dempsey scored again in the 20th minute to give himself a brace after Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Jeff Attinella saved but failed to gather Obafemi Martins' shot.
Although the Seattle Sounders have only just completed seven years in MLS, Emerald City Supporters are actually a bit older, having gotten their start back in the USL days. In fact, Sunday's game marked the completion of 10 seasons, so it made sense that they'd honor that rather impressive anniversary with another giant tifo.
Sounders scored three goals in 20 minutes and then cruised to a No. 4 seed in the playoffs.
Coming into the match with a full strength squad, the Sounders were flying early and pressing high up the pitch. A well-defended Real Salt Lake corner kicked off a Sounders counterattack that led to Clint Dempsey scoring in just the 5th minute from an Obafemi Martins cross.
Needing a win to guarantee a playoff spot, Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid is leaving virtually nothing to chance. The starting lineup he selected for Sunday's regular-season finale against Real Salt Lake might not be the absolutely best lineup the Sounders can field -- Nelson Haedo Valdez is on the bench -- but it is quite clearly their most creative one.
The second half of Decision Day and 90 minutes of Sounders soccer will help determine if 2015 is a regrettable failure or a near success. JoeTV is broadcasting the 4 PM match in Seattle.
At about 6 PM the Seattle Sounders will know if they have a second season or not. If they beat Real Salt Lake, they will.
Sounders play for Decision Day today, a playoff spot on the line and a weakened RSL squad to knock out. It's time to show up and take what is ours.
Sounders will make the playoffs today with a win, that simple. They know what has to be done and they can do it. Real Salt Lake is out of the playoff race and has been for a few games but those guys are playing for their jobs.
Here's what to expect at the game Sunday.
It could be your last chance to watch the Seattle Sounders for several months. Or it could be the precursor to Seattle's first successful MLS Cup run. CenturyLink Field will be packed, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready will be playing guitar, and if you're reading this site and you live in Seattle, chances are decent that you're going to be there.
Chastain chats about the evolution of soccer, her life since retiring as a player, and what more is needed to elevate women in sports.
On a scorching hot day in 1999, in front of 90,000 fans, Brandi Chastain walked up to the penalty spot—the weight of a country on her back. Miss, and China has the chance to rip a World Cup victory from the U.
If you're watching this, it's probably because you couldn't be here in person. But at least you can follow all the action.
It is almost #DecisionDay, so I wanted to write a helpful primer for you guys on Seattle Sounders FC's playoff prospects heading into [insert Periscope playback of a Vine showing me typing and saying HASHTAG as I Tweet this article] ###DecisionDay. Here are the options:
1. Seattle Sounders FC, of Seattle, Washington, USA scores more goals than Real Salt Lake of Sandy, Utah, USA, in CenturyLink Field on the Xbox Pitch between the hours of 4:00 p.
At 4 PM every team in the West, as well as Red Bull and the Fire will kick the ball in anger. At the end of the two hours of madness Seattle Sounders FC and the rest of the league will discover the MLS Cup Playoff standings. Real Salt Lake only participates in this great sorting as a trap. They have nothing to play for, as long as you ignore that members of their organization could be unemployed if things don't go well.
Decision Day is a big deal. Just look at all the MLS hype around it. Seattle Sounders FC need a single focus. If they win, they're in the playoffs and might even take 2nd in the West and 4th in the Shield. The opponent for Sunday's 4 PM (JoeTV) match is a moribund Real Salt Lake team with a coach on the hot seat and missing one of their top players.
Seattle was rumored to be among the front-runners to host matches.
The on-again, off-again Copa America Centenario is back on again, and this time it appears to be permanent. The tournament, which will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Copa America and feature six CONCACAF teams along with the 10 CONMEBOL nations, will take place from June 3-26, 2016 and could also be coming to Seattle.
Sounders at nearly full health, ready to clinch their playoff destiny on Sunday.
With the final, crucial match of the MLS regular season on the horizon, Seattle Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid said after Friday's training that he should have his pick from the entire squad for Sunday's Decision Day matchup against Real Salt Lake.
Tottenham might crash Upton Park. Earnie Stewart may come to rescue the Union. What exactly is a Swope Park Ranger?
Long-serving Seattle Sounders defender, current Senior Director of Business Operations, and Stanford alumnus Taylor Graham is being honored by the Pac-12 for his contributions off the field -- specifically his commitment to the community.
Yesterday's announcement that the Seattle Sounders games would no longer be called by Ross Fletcher after this season was a surprise. Fletcher is a relatively new voice in Seattle, but one with which both hardcore and casual fans are familiar. Initially the reports were that this was a cost cutting move.
The Seattle Sounders will be in the market for a new play-by-play announcer once again, as the club announced on Thursday that this will be Ross Fletcher's final season as the lead voice. While Fletcher will call any potential Sounders playoff games on the radio, it's possible that Sunday's regular-season finale will be his final TV appearance as postseason games will likely air on national TV.
Seattle could be adding the USWNT's every-minute fullback, but if rumors are true it's a temporary stay.
Laura Harvey is already set to put her stamp on the 2016 offseason, reportedly trading rarely-used defensive midfielder Amber Brooks to Houston for US international fullback Meghan Klingenberg.
While massive tifos have almost become the norm for important United States men's national team matches, they have been far less common on the women's side. Maybe Wednesday's display will help spark a change. Here's what American Outlaws put together for the friendly against Brazil:
It's a subtle dig, but it's there if you look close enough.
Unbeaten in 7 - Glass half full or half empty
Last week was a tie that felt like a win due to playing well against a good team and scoring late. This week's 1-1 result against the Houston Dynamo felt like a loss due to playing lousy against a bad team and scoring late. No one in this game stood out exceptionally, with generally mid to low scores across the board.
More than 53,000 fans are expected to attend Sunday's season finale.
Breaking attendance records has become the norm for the Seattle Sounders. And after failing to set a new mark last year for the first time in their MLS history, the Sounders are poised to set the bar once again as more than 53,000 are expected to be in attendance for Sunday's regular-season finale against Real Salt Lake.
The Reign's Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe join their national team teammates in their toughest challenge of the victory tour, in the team's first visit to Seattle in over a decade.
Tonight the USWNT takes on Brazil at CenturyLink Field, and the match will be notable for a number of reasons. First, it's the first time the US women have played a match here in over 13 years — their last appearance here was in a Gold Cup match in 2002 at Safeco Field.
The most successful team in Mexican soccer history and the current CONCACAF Champions League title holders await the Seattle Sounders in the quarterfinals. The Sounders' fate was sealed when they ended up with the No. 8 seed after the LA Galaxy surrendered a late goal against Comunicaciones and Tigres UANL were forced to settle for a scoreless tie with Herediano.
The U.S. had plenty of chances, but it took a goal in the 85th minute to save a 101-game undefeated streak on U.S. soil.
It was their first truly competitive Victory Tour match since the World Cup final over three months ago, Seattle Reign stars Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe, and the rest of the U.
Midfielder's loan to Melbourne City as a player and assistant manager also marks the beginning of her coaching career
In an interview on Wednesday with BBC Radio Wales Sport, Jess Fishlock discussed a wide range of topics related to her career and personal life.
The big news from the interview is that she decided to sign on with the Reign for three more seasons, which she says will probably be the final 3 seasons of her playing career.
If all goes well, we could see Pappa, Valdez, and Fisher on Sunday
Sigi Schmid said after training on Wednesday that the players questionable at the Houston Dynamo last weekend are back in Seattle Sounders training today, including Marco Pappa, Nelson Valdez, and Oniel Fisher. He said that they would wait and see how those players felt before confirming their availability on Sunday, but the trio's full participation today strongly hints that we could see them against Real Salt Lake.
With one night worth of games to play the Seattle Sounders can do no better than the 7th seed. Their quarterfinal matchup will either be a Liga MX or MLS squad.
The Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League group stages wrap up tonight with five matches. Of the teams advancing to the quarter finals, seven of the eight spots have already been determined, one of them being the Seattle Sounders.
The near annual hoax of "today being Back to the Future Day" is finally actually here. Doc Brown and Marty McFly jumped forward 30 years to Oct. 21, 2015. There are all kinds of tributes to this day all around the internet, and the Seattle Sounders have dutifully entered the fray with this poster:
There's something very familiar about all this.
The numbers suggest Sounders should match up well with most of their opponents.
Sunday's match carries a lot of meaning. While there's a chance to make the MLS Cup Playoffs after a loss, it's a convoluted path. Even the path to advancement with a draw takes a few readings to understand. Here is that scenario, which is basically a SAT-level word problem:
They would also clinch a playoff spot with a tie vs.
The U.S. Women's National team victory tour hits Seattle tonight, the USWNT will take on Brazil at CenturyLink field starting at 7pm.
The Seattle Sounders captain Brad Evans has been named the 2015 Sounders FC "Humanitarian of the Year". Evans is now up against all the other winners for "Major League Soccer Humanitarian of the Year".
You asked, we answered. Our "Finish Like a Girl" and "Megan Jalapeño" shirts are now available in a range of Youth Sizes.
In August, Ride of the Valkyries released its second t-shirt design for purchase: Megan Jalapeño. The shirt, an homage to Seattle Reign star and World Cup champion Megan Rapinoe, has been selling really well.
The league's 10th team arises from the purple family in central Florida.
Today NWSL made official one of the worst kept secrets in women's soccer: the Orlando Pride will be joining the league next season. What is a bit of a surprise is that the team will be managed by ex-USWNT head coach Tom Sermanni.
Following years of dominance, Seattle Sounders have found themselves in a perpetual state of neutrality, where they were joined this past Sunday by lowly Houston Dynamo. Together the teams combined to deliver a game that existed.
Normally a quiet, sleepy town, Seattle was rocked by the news that the Seattle Sounders merely tied Houston Dynamo on Sunday.
USSF presents vital document and further meeting details
A new non-profit called I'm A-OK is partnering with the Seahawks, offering free gameday kits for children with autism that include items like noise-cancelling headphones. This Sunday's game against the Panthers marked the launch of the program.
Cox, a long-time USWNT and Reign defender, hangs up her boots and will become coach of the Gig Harbor women's high school team.
Even for those who saw it coming, today's announcement that Seattle Reign defender Stephanie Cox is retiring from professional soccer still hurts. A lot. Cox was quietly one of the best defenders in the NWSL, with a left foot unlike any other in the league.
Seattle has not yet found a way to mix new midfield attackers with the star DP forwards.
Brad Evans is not a particularly creative midfielder.
...but put him on the backline with space to move and no mark to worry him, and he just may unleash a perfectly-weighted long pass that releases Obafemi Martins, who then proceeds to touch a shot around the keeper and, unfortunately, wide of the goal.
There was a bit too much clenching and not enough clinching in this one.
It's hard to put your finger on just what felt off about this match, but something wasn't working. Call it out-of-sync, lethargic, or a number of other descriptors that Twellman and Healey came up with, but this wan't the performance of a team firing on all cylinders going (hopefully!
Earlier in the season, a seven-game unbeaten streak including a couple of road trips would be seen as a very good stretch. But the players, the coaches, the fans wanted more from this one. The win to clinch the playoff spot didn't come, and the Sounders admit they lacked some sharpness and cohesion in Houston.
Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe are up for FIFA Women's Player of the Year, while Laura Harvey was nominated for FIFA Women's World Coach of the Year.
Today, FIFA revealed its nominees for two categories in the FIFA Ballon d'Or Awards, recognizing the best global talent in soccer for the year. Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe are both up for FIFA Women's Player of the Year, and Seattle Reign FC coach Laura Harvey was nominated for Coach of the Year.
Oh, and Sepp Blatter might be out for five years.
There's a pipeline of talent headed straight from the Puget Sound to the shores of the Australian Outback. In the latest episode of "Reign goes South," Keeling Winters scored in her first match for Western New York Flash Sydney Wanderers.
The Sounders still control their destiny, but blew their chance to secure a playoff spot this weekend. They can finish anywhere from 6th to 2nd, but they'll need help if they want to host.
Well that didn't go how I expected or wanted it to go, but it isn't the worst case scenario. The Sounders will need the final weekend in order to qualify for the playoffs, but they will still get in, barring a collapse of historic proportions (and a few other clubs would need to ruin our fun too).
Are you the kind of person who loves to analyze goal celebrations? Well, you'll have a field day with Obafemi Martins' following his late equalizer. Here's the goal.
If you feel like you missed the celebration it's because there was none. Does it matter? Probably not. But ... discuss anyway.
Seattle still is not a lock for the MLS Cup Playoffs, though they do end Houston's hopes.
A slow paced match did not open up until Ricardo Clark capitalized on a Tyrone Mears turnover. The former fixture on the national team opened scoring in the 65th minute. From there the Seattle Sounders knew they needed at least goal, if not more to make their 33rd match meaningful.
With injuries to Fisher and Gonzalez Dylan Remick gets his first start in ages. He will play behind Andreas Ivanschitz. The rest of the midfield features Osvaldo Alonso, Gonzalo Pineda and Erik Friberg is the right mid. Chad Marshall and Brad Evans will guard Stefan Frei with Tyrone Mears on their right flank.
The 2 PM match is on ESPN. It's only supposed to be 80 degrees with 24% humidity, that's almost like a victory for the fans and players.
If you want to watch both Seattle football teams you'll need picture-in-picture or a second screen. The Sounders take on the Houston Dynamo at 2, which should be about half way into the 2nd quarter of the Seahawks game.
All that matters tonight is three points. Forget 'which players where' meaning anything in this one. Fight to the death and get that playoff spot!
By now you know that tonight is about three points. That is all we care about. Pretty, ugly, nervy, exciting -- who cares how we do it, as long as the Seattle Sounders leave with the playoff spot.
It's another Seattle match on national television with ESPN carrying the 2 PM game in Houston. At BBVA Compass Stadium the Dynamo are 9-4-3. The Sounders are 4-9-3 away from the Puget Sound in league play. Sigi Schmid will be without Torres, Haedo Valdez and Gonzalez. Owen Coyle will have a full selection minus Rodriguez serving a red card suspension.
Schmid expects Brad Evans to feature against the Dynamo, but Marco Pappa will likely have to wait until next week.
Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said at Friday's training session that he expects the Houston Dynamo to "come out in an aggressive posture" on Sunday, as the home side will be desperate for even more desperate for a win than the Sounders, who could settle for a draw if needed.

Sounders center back is expected to travel to Houston, but role is still undecided.
Chad Marshall was a full participant in Friday's Seattle Sounders practice for the first time since a neck injury during training a few weeks ago that, at the time, seemed rather serious. Sigi Schmid noted that even though Marshall went through standard head injury protocol that's usually associated with concussions, the concern was less about a concussion and more about the player's history of neck injuries.

We get to see another side of a player who we've not gotten to know as well off the field.
Throughout Osvaldo Alonso's seven years with the Seattle Sounders, he has been known as "El Corazón" because of how much passion he plays with. We've also begun calling him "the Honey Badger" because of his reckless abandon, and seeming indifference toward his opponents.

Upon taking the pitch at Middlesbrough's Ayresome Park, the first thing that hit John Hamel was a coin. Probably no more than a 50 pence piece, but it was priceless for Hamel. He picked up the rebound, slipped it into his sock and got back to business.

It could be argued that the Seattle Sounders biggest game of the season is Sunday against the Houston Dynamo. A victory in Sunday's game would guarantee Seattle a spot in the playoffs.
It's been a pretty lackluster game at Red Bull Arena, but at least Brad Evans made a good soccer play. Here he is saving a surefire goal to keep the United States and Costa Rica scoreless.
I'm an American soccer fan. Those final three words cannot be separated when talking about me. Sure, I'll watch other games once in a while, but I won't care. As a former soldier, I'm American as can be. I love this damn place. I played as a kid, but really fell in love with the game while in Basic Training during World Cup '94.
Marco Pappa likely picked up a hamstring injury because...Seattle?
Marco Pappa had a rather eventful first half of the Copa Delta against El Salvador at StubHub Center. Pappa started the night with a perfectly struck shot for the top of the 18, beating the keeper easily. The goal gave Guatemala a 1-0 advantage that held till the half.
It would appear that Brad Evans has again worked himself into the good graces of Jurgen Klinsmann. Just a few days after getting a late substitute appearance against Mexico, the Seattle Sounders captain is starting for the United States in their friendly against Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Jordan Morris and the US U23s have a long road ahead of them now. In order to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics they must beat Canada and then beat Colombia. Neither of these are easy. Both the US and Canada are powered by MLS talent with a smattering of Euro players for both.
The Americans will need to get the ball to Morris.
While providing players a unique experience, FC Seattle also showcased Tacoma's Brent Goulet.
When DeAndre Yedlin's name was slotted into the Sunderland team sheet earlier this season, it was largely handled as matter-of-fact news by the Makems. The fact that Yedlin is American was more interesting stateside than Wearside.

Ride of the Valkyries wants your help identifying the best individual Reign FC performances for the year.
While it didn't quite end the way we wanted, the 2015 Seattle Reign FC season was a special one. The team won the NWSL Shield for the second season in a row, and made it to the NWSL Finals once again.
Two of Seattle's best join the exodus of NWSL players flying south for the winter.
This week the Reign announced that the team's two Great British superstars Kim Little and Jess Fishlock will be playing this winter for Melbourne City FC in Australia's W-League. They join a large crowd of other NWSL players — including Reign teammates Keelin Winters and Kendall Fletcher — making the move to the W-League, which has a conveniently complementary schedule for players otherwise facing a six month break from competitive play (and playing income).
Sounders can clinch a playoff spot with a win against Dynamo.
Clint Dempsey has already rejoined the Seattle Sounders after being dismissed early from international duties and Chad Marshall was able to get through about "two-thirds" of Monday's training session, meaning both players could potentially make their returns as soon as Sunday against the Houston Dynamo.

The conditions are perfect for today's Zakuani and Friends match in support of his Kingdom Hope charity at Starfire. It's a slow soccer day with the Sounders off for the weekend and the USMNT having played yesterday, and the weather has cleared to set up a delightful day of soccer in Tukwila.
Clint Dempsey will return to training while Brad Evans will go to NJ to play against Costa Rica.
After a devastating end to the CONCACAF Cup, it means that the Sounders will not lose Clint Dempsey, Brad Evans, or Jordan Morris (he'll sign by then) in 2017 for the Confederations Cup, in which ever country ends up with the hosting rights to the 2018 World Cup.
Most of the MLS2 teams struggled to attract fans in the 2015 USL season, and S2 was part of that problem.
The USL holds dual roles as a developmental league (for the MLS2s) and a competitive soccer league for fans in cities without higher quality. Reported USL attendance from the regular season echoes that.
No big surprise, but Clint Dempsey is among the United States' starters for the CONCACAF Cup match against Mexico on Saturday. Dempsey has scored a team high seven goals for the USA this year.

Mexico, it's worth remembering, is not the giant that we sometimes make them out to be. Just look at this equalizing goal from the United States: Virtually everyone attacking the goal is onside and almost all are open. That Geoff Cameron is the one who gets credit for putting away Michael Bradley's free kick is highly predictable.
In the 118th minute Paul Aguilar sent Mexico to the 2017 Russia Confederations Cup. His brilliant goal late in extra time broke a 2-2 deadlock.
Tied at 1-1 entering the two 15-minute halves of extra time, the match finally became interesting. In those short, tense minutes Oribe Peralta opened the scoring after just eight added minutes.
The Rose Bowl, Fox Sports 1 and Univision are hosting the biggest non-World Cup match between soccer rivals Mexico and the United States. The 6:30 PM match is getting an extensive pregame, with coverage starting at 5 PM.
What is this Concacaf Cup you might ask?
It is a one-game playoff between the winner of the 2013 Gold Cup (USA) and the winner of the 2015 Gold Cup (Mexico).
The game is being played on Sunday at Starfire.
The last time Steve Zakuani stepped on the field in a competitive setting was on Aug. 24, 2014. The speedy winger picked up an assist in the Portland Timbers' 4-2 loss to the Seattle Sounders.
Unfortunately, injuries kept him off the field for the rest of the season and Zakuani chose to retire, having made just 39 appearances over the previous four seasons while never quite making a full recovery from the broken leg he suffered in 2011.

There's this thing at the Rose Bowl tomorrow. Messi could go to jail for tax fraud. Nemeth is rewarded for embarrassing Portland.
Clint Dempsey's attitude on the field is pretty apparent almost always (especially when he is ripping up referee's notebooks). It all started back in Nacogdoches, where he and his friends and opponents honed their trash talking skills and were always playing hard for bragging rights.
A tie that felt like the win we may have played well enough to deserve
Happy about a 1-1 tie! I am not sure we deserved to win, but based on my ratings we sure didn't deserve to lose against the LA Galaxy on Sunday. I saw a lot of positives this week and we look to be close to really breaking out.
Before Yanks began earning jobs in England, FC Seattle sent an entirely homegrown team to the UK.

Now that Seattle Sounders FC2 (commonly referred to as S2) have finished their inaugural season in the United Soccer League (USL) after losing 2-0 to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC last month, some of the club's players have been spotted training with their parent club this week. Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said on Tuesday that, while he didn't have the details on players' contracts and such, some S2 players would be training with the first team until at least October 17th.
It might make sense in a vague theoretical, but don't count on it happening.
If you were watching the New York Red Bulls-Montreal Impact match on Wednesday night or happened to be on Twitter around the same time, you were probably a little shocked to hear a seemingly crazy rumor involving two teams that had basically nothing to do with the match: That the Seattle Sounders and New York City FC were discussing the possibility of effectively swapping coaches.

Nos Audietis is back with another exciting edition of everyone's favorite unofficial Seattle Sounders podcast. On this week's show, Jeremiah and Aaron discuss the somewhat disappointing 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy and continue to look ahead to the playoffs.
What you need to know for US vs. Mexico and another long piece on Jordan Morris
It's an oft told story at this point, but Grantland has written a piece on why Jordan Morris has chosen to remain at Stanford. We can never have too many Jordan Morris stories.
Zach Scott is, by far, the longest serving Sounder on the squad, but there are three other players who have been around for all of the MLS years.
The Sounders Academy product is coming off another standout performance in the Red, White and Blue, but he doesn't look much closer to going pro.
Jordan Morris scored in Olympics qualifying, again. The Seattle Sounders Academy product and current Stanford junior got his third goal of the qualifying tournament on Tuesday, this time cleverly putting away a feed in front of goal to help the United States breeze to a 4-0 victory over Panama and complete a perfect group stage.
San Jose and Portland are neck and neck in the West, Montreal just has to cash in their games in hand in the East, and New Jersey is closing in on another Supporters Shield.
For all of the complaints about the MLS Playoff system, you can't argue that it doesn't keep the end of the season interesting.
Score the players in the home draw that was dangerously close to a home loss.
Chad Barrett went from relaxing as a spectator to saving his team's bacon pretty quickly Sunday evening, snatching the late late goal that keeps the Sounders in a more solid playoff position. He certainly did well for himself in those limited minutes he played, but maybe he wouldn't have entered the match at all if his teammates had taken care of business earlier in the match.
Two dramatically different halves cemented a late season draw between the Seattle Sounders and the LA Galaxy
In a tale of two halves, the Seattle Sounders were able to eke out a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy at Centurylink Field on Sunday. While the first half was anything but pretty for the Sounders, their explosion in the second half gave the Galaxy a serious challenge.
Much has been said about Chad Barrett's late equalizer against the LA Galaxy on Sunday, but what caught many fans' eyes was the forward's "Lambeau Leap"-esque celebration when he jumped into the arms of the crowd. When asked if the routine had been planned, Barrett denied any forethought:
"I never plan anything," Barrett said.
A win in Houston and the Seattle Sounders can guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs.
The International break will give the Seattle Sounders some extra time to get healthy, which is good news for Chad Marshall. Marshall returned to training on Tuesday and is "Ramping up" for a return to the starting lineup against Houston Dynamo.
Victor Mansaray and academy player Nicholas Hinds started in an 8-1 defeat by their German hosts.
There is a United States youth team currently playing a tournament in Germany, but you wouldn't know it from the US Soccer website or twitter feeds. Luckily, the internet exists, and a roster for the opening US game against Germany in Stuttgart was made available via the old-fashioned printed page.
Aside from Brad Evans and Clint Dempsey, who are with the USMNT, Sounders will take it easy this week.
Chad Marshall and Nelson Haedo Valdez, the two most notable absences from the Seattle Sounders lineup on Sunday, could potentially be ready for Oct. 18th's away clash at the Houston Dynamo, head coach Sigi Schmid said following Tuesday's training session.
The Sounders didn't exploit the hole between LA's Juninho and their centerbacks. A bit more work in that space could have turned that draw into a win.
What happened on D.C. United's "Swipe Right Night?" Geekwire knows.
As the Washington Post reported, the event included the "Tinder District," a pre-game party zone that included a band, drinking games like beer pong and an open bar.
Another game, another draw, this time against LA Galaxy. You'd think a draw would be a good result against the first place team, but nah, nah it was kinda lame. Thank you Chad Barrett for making it a not-loss though.
Did you know that the Seattle Sounders played the LA Galaxy on Sunday? I'm sure you did.
Next week's game in Houston is the first "flex" weekend.
For several weeks, Seattle Sounders fans have been waiting patiently as the time for next Sunday's match against the Houston Dynamo has been listed as "TBD." That game finally has an official time: 2 p.m. Pacific and it will be aired on ESPN.
2015 has been an unlucky season for Seattle when it comes to injury... but not out of keeping with league context. The team has played well under adversity... but perhaps not so well as hoped.
Fans of the Seattle Sounders could be forgiven for feeling a bit superstitious on Sunday when Nelson Valdez was scratched from the starting 11.
As if the Seattle Sounders needed to find new ways to pick up injuries, Nelson Haedo Valdez just left warmups limping and has been replaced by Lamar Neagle in the starting lineup. Valdez picked up a left calf strain, and there's no word yet on how serious it may be.
Replacing Neagle on the Sounders bench is Chad Barrett.
Late goal allows Sounders to stay clear of the panic zone.
Chad Barrett has been having a rough year. The kind of year where he injures himself celebrating a goal. The kind of year where he is often left off the 18. The kind of year where some bro keys his car.
For at least a night, though, he'll be the guy who snatched a point when the Seattle Sounders needed one pretty freaking badly.
This was not a pretty goal, but it counts just the same. Chad Barrett basically ran into Brad Evans' flicked header, pushing it past Donovan Ricketts and grabbing a point the Seattle Sounders desperately needed.
Meanwhile, his teammates were nothing but supportive.
Zach Scott did not have a great game. The Seattle Sounders center back misplayed a couple balls and, most notably, had a very loose pass that led directly to the LA Galaxy's only goal. But he also won all eight of his aerial duels, made five interceptions, was credited with four clearances and was at least partially responsible for Giovanni Dos Santos being held completely in check.
We haven't had the pleasure of sharing as much LevyFilms' footage as we have in past seasons, but luckily he was at Sunday's match. And wouldn't you know it, he caught Chad Barrett's tying goal. Great stuff.

Steven Gerrard has gotten older, slower, and there are times when it seems like he does not care about what his team needs him to do.
Schmid's emotional Hall of Fame induction speech talked about the need for humility, among other things.
Sigi Schmid was formally inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Saturday, along with Kasey Keller and Glenn Myernick. Schmid gave a wonderful speech, thanking a who's who of people who laid the groundwork for today's soccer landscape.
If Sounders qualify for conference finals, home leg would likely be moved to Monday or Tuesday.
The tentative MLS Playoff dates were announced on Friday, and they looked rather ominous for Seattle Sounders fans hoping to avoid having to watch their team play on top of football lines as both legs of the conference semifinals were scheduled days when the Seahawks are playing at home.

LA Galaxy are in command of the Supporters' Shield race, but have a significant obstacle to overcome if they are to actually take it - the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field.
Fisher's and Valdez's situations were also elaborated upon.

Saying goodbye to another almost-perfect season
Well, that wasn't what we wanted. Again the season ends in the final moment, at the feet — or in this case, at the head ‐ of Amy Rodriguez. It's thin gruel right now, but there's some gratification that they lost to a better team. It wasn't a bad bounce or bad luck or a bad call.
For the third time in seven season markings for the Seattle Seahawks will be on the XBox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
Sharing a stadium has created a certain number of advantages for Seattle Sounders FC. They get this flexible seating arrangement where most matches are merely 40,000 or so people, but sometimes they can get 67,000 to attend.

A brace for JMo in Kansas City, a town that's having a heck of a week. The Union finally make a big change.
Let's get this out of the way: The Reign fell just short of their prize again. Of course, again, it was FC Kansas City who packed it in and shut down Seattle's attack. For those counting, that brings the trophy count this week for Kansas City to two.
Another hard fought point earned from a tough rough trip, the mighty Sounders keep pace in the playoff hunt.
What an ugly game of soccer they play in Kansas City. It seems every time we play those guys it devolves into a slugfest, and this was no different even though their coach chose to rest players for other competitions.
Footy Headlines reports on the new training top and the expected colors of next year's primary and third kits.

The strongest attack in Women's soccer couldn't find a goal in a defensive battle that went right to the wire.
For the second year in a row, the Seattle Reign came up a goal short of an NWSL championship. On neutral turf, FC Kansas City scored too late for the Reign to manage an answer, and repeated as league champions on a 1-0 scoreline.
Seattle fell just short in 2014. Now it's time to remedy that failure, on the field of their biggest rival.
We have arrived — through a long, circuitous season interrupted and punctuated by World Cup victory — at the final moments. The business left unfinished at the end of the 2014 season is presented again to the Reign.
No timeline for recovery, but Marshall has been discharged from hospital
When Chad Marshall crashed to the turf during Wednesday's training session and was rushed off in an ambulance, there were fears of the worst. The three-time MLS Defender of the Year has battled concussions throughout his career and it seemed at least possible that this could be a career ender.

After all the work they did to save the country from certain destruction, the Seattle Reign came up just short. Now this year, their quest is to undo the damage and come out victorious in their Secret Wars.
Another hamstring injury may mean a return for Remick or a spot start for Gonzalez.
