Sounders, Christian Tiffert part ways

Sounder at Heart at related • 1 view

Just hours before the start of the season, the Seattle Sounders have announced that they will "part ways" with Designated Player Christian Tiffert. The move has been anticipated for several weeks, as the German midfielder had not been training with the team, and it clears the way for the Sounders to sign another Designated Player.

Obafemi Martins seems to indicate move to Sounders still on, Levante disagrees

Depending on how you choose to interpret the information leaking out of Spain, it's either just a matter of time before Obafemi Martins joins the Seattle Sounders or the deal is completely dead. The onus seems to be entirely with the Sounders at this point, as they've reportedly come to personal terms with Martins and only need to decide if they are willing to pay his approximately $4 million exit fee plus about $800,000 in VAT.

Sounders' decision on Christian Tiffert due today

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

Decision day has finally come for the Seattle Sounders to decide whether or not they will buy out Designated Player Christian Tiffert. The Sounders surely hoped to have Tiffert's replacement locked up by now, but complications in Spain have pushed that back until at least Monday. There's little reason to believe the Sounders will suddenly reverse course and keep Tiffert, though, as he hasn't even been training with the team for nearly three weeks.

Helped or Hurt: Last call edition

Sounder at Heart at related • 3 views

Based on our own math, it would appear that there are, at most, two spots still remaining up for grabs on the Seattle Sounders roster. Realistically, there might be even less. Josh Mayers was kind enough to put together this list of players that are seemingly in competition:

Will Bates (supplemental draft pick), Travis Bowen (trialist), Kevin Durr (supplemental draft pick, still has commitments with Air Force Academy), Ashani Fairclough (undrafted rookie), Doug Herrick (MLS rights controlled by Portland), Philip Lund (trialist), Stephen Okai (MLS rights controlled by Philadelphia), Jennings Rex (supplemental draft pick)

There obviously isn't much time left to impress, but here's who I thought helped or hurt themselves in the final two preseason games:

Helped

Ashani Fairclough: Sure, he had some regrettable challenges and tackles, but he acquitted himself well while playing alongside fellow rookie Eriq Zavaleta.

When you sub on almost an entire team of fresh players to play against a mostly unchanged side that's already been on the field for a half, it would be easy to overestimate the quality of the new players. But even with that caveat in mind, the Seattle team playing in the second half looked more aggressive, more confident, and more energized, and in the end they earned the victory.

Javier Saviola: Scouting Report

Javier Saviola may be 31, which starts to sound old for a striker, but he should have "less years" on his legs considering there have been three season out of the past five where he's played less than 1,000 minutes. Don't worry though, he wasn't hurt, he was just not a first choice guy at his club.

At 3 PM (Pacific) Seattle Sounders FC will again take on Real Salt Lake in game action. This time the result is not very important. The first lineup that Jason Kreis played in the Desert Diamond Cup was primarily youngsters competing for time in the 18 or even on the roster. After going up 2-nil on New York the squad from Utah gave up two more goals.

Sounders vs. Revolution, Desert Diamond Cup: Highlight and quotes

The Seattle Sounders' Desert Diamond Cup opener fell well short of beautiful, but that doesn't mean the match lacked encouraging moments. The most impressive of those was provided by Eddie Johnson, who laced a beautiful left-footed shot inside the far post.

Johnson took a pass along the right flank and cut it back, a move that created a rather embarrassing amount of space.

Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson were clearly the highlights of the match. Johnson's move to beat the New England Revolution defense and subsequent shot were exactly what Seattle Sounders FC will need to see from the forward this year. Evans was a strong distributor, great at off ball runs and threaded the penalty shot into the net.

Repeat after me: Wins and losses are not important in preseason. This is not the time to win games, although many will find that exciting. Losses should not fuel the fire for a player to do better. This is the time to test the roster; to figure out who deserves those final spots; to figure out the First XI and the regular 18.

There are seven players who could start in those three roles, or 210 combinations (if I remember this section of math correctly).

Dropping the points on the road in the opening round of the CONCACAF Hex is not doom. There are still 27 to get and 15 is basically the break point. Too often the United States would not clear the ball effectively and both Honduras goals were the result of defensive errors.

The Seattle Sounders can expect strong assist numbers from the play-making winger, but what they need in light of the loss of Fredy Montero is more power from the stacked midfield.
