New Zealand in the World Cup!

See The Cup 14 November @ 05:37 AM EST

Going against what this writer wanted, New Zealand became the 24th nation with a ticket for South Africa by beating Bahrain at home. The only goal of the match was scored by Rory Fallon in the final moments of the first-half. The first-leg of this playoff ended 0-0, which gave Bahrain the chance of qualifying with a draw different from the nil one.

Dreadful Olympiacos Waste Nikopolidis Heroics

Premiership Talk Blog 30 September @ 09:46 AM EST

As the Olympiacos team bus got closer and closer to the Finsbury Park area, I am sure veteran goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis began to relive some of the greatest moments of his career at the highest level. From his invaluable contribution in Greece's historic Euro 2004 win to his consistency during his club's league triumph over the last three years, Nikopolidis is no stranger to success at a grand stage.

Why Arsene’s a trolley good fellow…

Arsenal Insider 30 September @ 02:56 AM EST

by CARL ELDRIDGE Arsene Wenger might get one or two quizzical gawps if he should take a trolley round the Waitrose near his Barnet home after the Arsenal saw of Olympiacos with a 2-0 Champions League triumph at the Emirates last night.

For AW referred to his local supermarket in his post-match analysis and is quoted this morning in the Daily Mail.

Arsenal 2-0 Olympiacos : Arsenal turn Greeks over and give them a pounding

Arseblog 30 September @ 02:18 AM EST

It's a long time since I've seen a team as negative as Olympiacos were last night. In the 6th minute Arsenal had possession just inside our own half, every single Olympiacos player was behind the ball. Pathetic.

I figure as Zico has only recently taken over as manager he doesn't know the players too well so his plan was to try and stop us playing.

UEFA’s French conspiracy

Dirty Tackle 29 September @ 06:34 PM EST

At the weekend we discussed accusations of Serie A referees favoring bigger clubs and now we have similar accusations of French referees favoring French clubs in the Champions League. Well, not actual French clubs, because their success in the Champions League would be far too suspicious. No, they're accused of favoring the one good club that's more French than Gerard Depardieu in a beret Arsenal.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva – as bad as they say?

Center Holds It 29 September @ 05:48 AM EST
We all love a good victim, arguably even more than we love our heroes. In the Premier League, Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, more commonly known as "that useless bag of Brazilian shite", has become the bete noire du jour. "And he doesn't even look bloody Brazilian!"
It's true that Lucas doesn't look like the British idea of a Brazilian footballer: we prefer our South Americans to be tanned, elegant and outrageously, ostentatiously gifted. Click to continue reading...

Olympiacos preview and favourite line-up: Kieran Gibbs deserves a start on the left

The Gunning Hawk 28 September @ 12:00 PM EST

Having battled past Fulham thanks to an unforgettable performance by Vito Mannone, the lads will now resume their Champions League adventure as they face Olympiacos, the leaders in Greece. Important is of course not to make the same mistake of last Saturday with many believing we would have eased past Fulham by three or four goals.

Calcio, Serie A: Zoff scatenato. Esalta Diego e striglia Lippi "convochi Cassano, fa cose uniche"

The 10 Hottest newboys in Serie A

SoccerLens 06 August @ 02:50 AM EST

Once upon a time, Italian football was the centre of the universe. As recently as the turn of the decade, Serie A was the preferred destination for pretty much all of the world's top talents. From Maradona to Zico, Platini to Zidane, greats from all over the world flocked.

Nowadays things have changed slightly, and Italian football- despite the 2006 World Cup success- has fallen a bit behind its English & Spanish counterparts in terms of glamour and European prestige.

Southampton is Going to Die

A More Splendid Life 30 June @ 08:37 AM EST
I've always loved the Saints, and not just because of their nickname which for some reason consistently brought to mind a rag tag inner city basketball team from some seventies sports flick. Mostly I loved Southampton because Matt Le Tissier loved Southampton, a man who'd you pass by on the street without a thought, perhaps surmising he might be in security, or construction, but on the pitch could do things with the ball worthy of Zico.
