Everton scout Carlo Jacomuzzi has claimed that his side are set to sign Arsenal's Olivier Giroud for £20 Million this summer, a fee he described as a bargain. AC Milan falls to Sampdoria, 0-1

Soccerblog at related • 0 views

Newly promoted Sampdoria delivered a message for AC Milan and it wasn't a good one. Christian Abbiati could not move a muscle as Andrea Costa powered in his header to give Sampdoria the winner. In another disturbing sign, the San Siro was half empty as the fans stayed away, disillusioned by the club's failure to sign quality replacements for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva.

Milan transfer update: Zapata signs, Borriello to follow?

AC Milan Blog at related • 0 views
It came out of nowhere. Davide Astori, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Nicolas N'Koulou, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and the list went on and on. In the end, it was Cristian Zapata. Perhaps, not quite the replacement many were hoping for, but, he might not be the last defender to arrive. Â Judging by Milan's calamitous display against Real Madrid where [.

Milan Transfer Update (May 31, Part 1): More interest in Thiago and the possible replacements

It can often be as exciting on the pitch, with all the highs and lows a good match can bring. I talk of the transfer market, of course. This summer, however, may not a particularly enjoyable one for Milan. The club's resistance to overtures for Robinho, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pato and Thiago Silva is set for [.

Colorado Rapids

Faster, Higher, Stronger?

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
As much as I love the Rapids, this will be my sporting obsession for now
So the Rapids have one more chance to get a meaningful win this month, being 0-0-5 so far. Tomorrow the Sounders are back for their first game in Colorado since the Steve Zakuani incident, and hopefully he'll be playing.

Well...That Sucked

A reverse MLS Cup. In Toronto Dallas scored first and then gave up two goals. Saturday night we scored first and then gave up two goals. Other than that, if you saw the Seattle loss or the Vancouver loss or the San Jose loss then you saw this game. I'm not going to spend any time rehashing what we already know.

The Unamazing Seven

View From The Couch at related • 0 views

Now 7 games in Seattle, 7 losses. Total of 5 goals scored, 18 conceded. That's really the story of this game.
The Rapids were under siege the first 15 minutes but somehow, amazingly, didn't give up a goal. The rest of the half was also controlled by the Sounders, but the Rapids managed to relieve the pressure a bit better after the first third of the half.

First of all, read my recap of the last Vancouver game. Now that you've done that I can skip most of my recap of this game. The Rapids dominated this game and lost 1-0. 17 attempts on goal to 3, 6 shots on target to 1. Vancouver's 1 shot went in, none of the Rapids shots came close. That was the difference.

Kosuke Kimura Traded

A day that would always eventually come, but none of hoped to see so soon. Koz is no longer a Rapid. This afternoon he was traded to the Portland Timbers for allocation money and an international player spot.

Its no secret that Koz is (or was, now) my favorite player on the Rapids. That said he's had a rough year and has been passed on the depth chart by Freeman and Zapata.

Rapids Try To Burn Whitecaps

The burning of York
200 years ago the U.S. fought the War of 1812 against Britain, mainly in British-held Canada. As part of the war the American forces burned York. Tonight the Rapids will try to recreate the victory over Canada by beating the Vancouver Whitecaps on Independence Day.

The True Clash
The Rapids defense is going to have to Clampdown on the team formally known as the Clash order to get a win tomorrow night. Our first mid-week home game of the season will probably result in a smaller but hopefully no less vocal crowd. Despite that the tailgate will go on as normal with a 5:30 start.

River whitecaps are better than ocean ones
When the Rapids face the Whitecaps you know that somebody's getting soaked. In the first of our 3 meetings against them the Rapids make a trip to the Great White North. The Rapids have never lost in Vancouver (all of one game) while they've never won in Toronto when facing Toronto, so western Canada is much more favorable to us.

Colorado Outplayed By DC

Horrible play, two complete debacles on defense, and only two shots on target. An almost forgettable game that almost doesn't deserve a review, but I wanted to highlight the two goals as they really show the disaster of our defense last night.

On the first goal Neal was allowed to bring the ball a good 50 yards into the Rapids end with no pressure.

A measured outing from a makeshift lineup and a deserved victory. If not for an excellent performance from Pickens in the Colorado net, it would have been an even uglier scoreline for the Rapids, and that has to be encouraging. But you can't ignore that Colorado were severely banged up as well, lacked the rhythm that comes with games in quick succession, and still made things uncomfortable at times for United.

Roster Moves and Player Updates

A couple of roster notes from the last couple of days.

  • Yesterday Colorado released Josh Janniere in order to make room for Edu on the roster.
  • They also placed Ross LaBauex on IR
  • Today they announced that Wynne and Cummings will be out about 4 weeks.
So that leaves us with 31 rostered players.

Cummings leads Rapids past Fire

Colorado Soccer Now at related • 0 views

If the boot of Omar Cummings tells anything about the Colorado Rapids season, then things are off to a promising start.

Cummings scored in the 58th minute, his second tally in four games this season, as the Rapids beat the Chicago Fire 2-0 in Commerce City.

With the win, the Rapids improved to 3-1 on the season.

Friday Kickoff: UEFA, FIFA reach deal; El Salvador, Canada U-23s draw and more

European clubs have seemingly gotten their way in the battle with FIFA.

UEFA and FIFA reached an agreement at the UEFA Congress for a six-year deal that works heavily in the clubs' favor.Â

As a result of the new pact, there will be no more one-off friendlies such as the one in August right after most club seasons begin, and instead the calendar over the next two years leading up to the World Cup will consist of nine instances of countries playing two friendlies over a few-day span.

Rapids face Crew to start season

Following the shortest offseason, Major League Soccer swings into action on Saturday and the Rapids face Columbus at home in Commerce City.

The March 10 first kick comes less than four months after the Los Angeles Galaxy claimed the MLS Cup title. Now the league and the Rapids begin their 16th season of play less than two weeks from the start of spring.

New Trialist and Season Preview

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
A surprise announcement from Commerce City today as Brazilian Luis Eduardo Schmidt, aka Edu, has started a trial with the team. He contacted the Rapids about a trial, as opposed to the usual other way around. He's a 33 year old midfielder/forward with 15 years of experience in Brazil and Spain. He has 63 goals in 253 La Liga appearances over 9 years.

Final Roster Set

Earlier today draftee Joel Helmick tweeted this:
Thank you @ColoradoRapids for the great opportunity. Made some friends and learned a lot. Hope to return sometime in the future.
From this I think its safe to say that the Rapids didn't extend him a contract. Not really a surprise since he was our pick in the final round of the Supplemental Draft and we already had 3 keepers under contract.

George Brislen-Hall Heads Home

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
George Brislen-Hall tweeted last night that he was headed home to London today, so we can assume his trial is over. That leaves us with only draftee Joel Helmick in camp but not signed. The Rapids site still lists Andres Sarmiento as a guest player, but since he didn't go with the team to Hawaii I'm guessing he's not a real candidate for a roster spot.

Colorado Loses To Yokohama

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
Last night (well technically early this morning) the Rapids lost 2-1 to Yokohama FC of the Japanese 2nd division. A 10 minute spell in the second half saw Colorado give up two goals and they couldn't climb back out of the hole. The starting XI for the burgundy boys (seen above):

Cascio - Cummings - MullanLarentowicz - Castrillon - MastroeniZapata - Moor - Wynne - KimuraPickens
With the exception of the injured Casey I think that's pretty close to our starting XI right now.

Luis Zapata signed by the Rapids

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
I'm sure we'll see an official announcement tomorrow, but Tim Hinchey just tweeted this:
I would like to welcome Luis Zapata to the Colorado Rapids!
So add one more to the roster! That puts us at 30 signed players and 6 out of a possible 6 internationals. Now if any of the other trialists wants a job they'll have to beat out a signed player to do it.

Hawai'i Here We Come!

The team left for Hawai'i today. My sister, brother-in-law, and cousins leave for Hawai'i this week (though not for the tournament). Me? I'm stuck in cold Denver. Before they left the team made some cuts from training camp. Aaron Pitchkolan, Issac Cowles, Sterling Copeland, Jefferson Angulo, Daniel Frias, Alanso Jimenez, and Masaki Hemmi were let go.

No Eddie Johnson In Commerce City

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
Yesterday Montreal used its #1 spot in the allocation order to take Eddie Johnson with the idea of trading him. Colorado was the expected destination but at the last minute Seattle swooped in, trading Mike Fucito and Lamar Neagle for him.

At that price I'm fine with not getting Eddie Johnson.

Rumors And Trialists

Last night the Rapids held a Supporters Forum at Fado's in Lodo. I was unable to attend, but the big news that came out of the forum was that Colorado is pursuing a young #10-style Argentine midfielder. No details have been leaked on his name or his background but there may be a new arrival from South America in Commerce City soon.

Colorado Comes Up Short On Short Week

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
Short recap with the quick turnaround to Dallas on Sunday. The Rapids played better than New England but made a couple of mental lapses on defense and that was enough to give the Revs a win. Both Marshall and Freeman got the start (Marshall in place of the injured Wynne) while the rest of the starting XI was the standard we've seen the last couple of games.

Rapids Outscore Galaxy, Still Lose

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
Colorado was thoroughly outplayed in the first half, mounted a comeback in the second half, got a gift PK that would have given them a draw, and then blew the PK (with the help of a couple of a$$hole fans) and lost.

The first half was ugly soccer from the home side. There were, once again, no shots on goal.

The take-over of an English football club by the owner of an Italian club passed somewhat quietly on account of the European Championships but, as Paul Grech, writes Watfords tie-in with Udinese owner Giampaolo Pozzo might just end up having a significance that reaches some way beyond Vicarage Road.

New Player Joins the Rapids

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
Colorado announced the signing today of Brazilian striker Luis Eduardo Schmidt, commonly known ad Edu. He had trialed with the team last month and rejoined the team this week. Edu is 33 and has previously played in Brazil and Spain's La Liga. He's a big guy that would probably fill in well in Casey's target striker role.
