Making sense of the Union’s Great Roster Purge of 2015

Brotherly Game at related • 0 views

It was a crazy day for the Philadelphia Union yesterday, with the Union making two very big trades and freeing up a ton of cap space by declining some expensive options. Where does the club stand now?

Yesterday morning, the Philadelphia Union's roster looked like this:

  • Goalkeepers: Andre Blake, John McCarthy, Zac MacMath
  • Defenders: Warren Creavalle, Maurice Edu, Ethan White, Richie Marquez, Steven Vitoria, Ray Gaddis, Fabinho, Austin Berry
  • Midfielders: Vincent Nogueira, Brian Carroll, Cristian Maidana, Michael Lahoud, Eric Ayuk, Jimmy McLaughlin, Zach Pfeffer, Fred, Tranquillo Barnetta, Danny Cruz
  • Forwards: Conor Casey, Sebastien Le Toux, Andrew Wenger, CJ Sapong, Fernando Aristeguieta, Antoine Hoppenot

Now, it's down to this:

  • Goalkeepers: Andre Blake, John McCarthy
  • Defenders: Maurice Edu, Ethan White, Richie Marquez, Steven Vitoria, Ray Gaddis, Fabinho
  • Midfielders: Vincent Nogueira, Michael Lahoud, Eric Ayuk, Jimmy McLaughlin, Zach Pfeffer, Tranquillo Barnetta, Chris Pontius
  • Forwards: Sebastien Le Toux, CJ Sapong, Fernando Aristeguieta

At first glance, the Union are in desperate need of help on the wings.

A couple of pieces of news and then a wrap-up of one of the more eventful weeks in Rapids history.

First, the player to be named later in the Philly trade for the #2 pick is midfielder Zach Pfeffer. He's a homegrown player that's gotten minimal playing time with the Union. Some of their fans say its due to the Union not doing a good enough job of finding a spot for him, others say its because while he has some skills he's still raw and undeveloped.

The utility midfielders had mixed results this season, but better days are hopefully ahead for this well matched pair.

When Tranquillo Barnetta arrived in Philadelphia in late July, Zach Pfeffer must have had mixed emotions. Ten years his senior, the Swiss national would certainly take up minutes in the midfield and make it more difficult for Zach to see the pitch.
