Obadin is a Bull.

Jakarta Casual 21 November @ 12:26 AM EST
There were times in the early days of the 2009 SLeague when it seemed that Gabriel Obadin Aikhena was carrying the Young Lions singlehandedly.
He wasn't of course but the 24 year old defender did impress many with his robust performances for the Young Lions and hopes were high that he would become the next foreigner to step into the national team. Click to continue reading...

From Pussy Cats to Young Lions

Jakarta Casual 30 October @ 04:35 PM EST
It wasn't that long ago I did a piece on Jakarta Casual TV saying that the Young Lions were better off packing their bags and moving to Malaysia as that was the only way they were going to add the competitive bite that was necessary to their future development.
That was posted two days after a 1-1 draw with Super Reds, not a bad rsult as it happens, but look back at the run they were on at the time. Click to continue reading...

It's not easy after all.....

BoLASEPaKO - a simple view on Singapore Soccer 06 September @ 10:17 AM EST
It's not easy to take action photos, and I just realized that few hours ago.
Armed with my newly-purchased "Fuji S2000", I decided to try it out (not without having some "interactions" with one of the "jaga", again!)
While I was snapping this shot of Geylang's players warming up from this position, I was advised by one of the "jaga", "Sir, you are not allow to take picture from here as you can only do so from behind the goal-line. Click to continue reading...

How woeful are the Young Lions?

BoLASEPaKO - a simple view on Singapore Soccer 22 August @ 11:15 AM EST
Coach Terry Pathmanathan (first from left) demands improvement from his Young Lions.
While much of the focus been centered on their seniors - the Lions, the current form of this team that are going to be the core of this year's SEA Games football squad is also a major cause of concern.
Until this day, the performance by the Young Lions are far from satisfactory. Click to continue reading...

SINGAPORE, 5 August 2009: Singapore's Under-18 team yesterday kicked off their Asean Football Federation Under-19 Youth Championship with a 1-1 draw against favourites Australia in their opening match of the tournament at the Thanh Long Sports Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
The team got off to a shaky start against the bigger and more physical Australians and soon found themselves a goal down after 20 minutes through Eli Babalj's header. Click to continue reading...

Plugging the SLeague talent drain

Jakarta Casual 27 July @ 08:57 PM EST
The close season isn't my favourite time of the year. Stories switch from on the field to off it and often come through second or third hand sources. With no action people have to elsewhere for their fix and of course that means gossip.
Hardly a day goes by without one of the Indonesian sports tabloids linking a Singaporean or Thai with clubs here. Click to continue reading...

Top 5 Rams?

Jakarta Casual 15 July @ 05:52 AM EST
Victory tonight for Woodlands Wellington could see nosebleeds all round as the Rams would reach the heady heights of 5th after four straight wins.
I tend not to write too much about Nenad Bacin's men but while attention, such as it is in Singapore, has been on the unbeaten runs of SAF and Tampines Rovers Woodlands have been quietly winning at challengers Gombak United and brushing aside Home United and Balestier Khalsa to set up tonight's clash with Geylang United and the prospect of a fourth straight win. Malaysian Premier League

Jakarta Casual 07 July @ 10:12 PM EST
There are two main Malaysian divisions. One is the Super League, MSL, which I cover here. This is basically an extension of the former Malaysia Cup set up with state funded state teams like Kedah and Perlis alongside a reality TV show My Team etc. The state teams of course get their money from their respective states and may well have no end of political interference going on behind the scenes.
