Fabio Capello isn't the only former England manager looking for a new gig. Sven-Goran Eriksson,
out of work since he was sacked by Leicester in October, decided to join the many others offering
their services for the Leeds job recently vacated by Simon Grayson. But Leeds chairman and
cantankerous owl Ken Bates, was less than receptive to his offer.
In January, I cast an eye on the unending cacophony of abuse in online football communities, with
a section on Doncaster Rovers website Viva Rovers, and provoking a compelling spate of comments
involving Leeds United blog, The Scratching Shed. The problems are not confined to Yorkshire alone,
but as an important follow up, Michael Wood here provides an epitaph on the Bradford City site, Boy
from Brazil, one of the very best chronicles online and one that closed towards the end of 2011.
The phrase "emotional rollercoaster" is one that is overused in football these days, but the
supporters of Darlington FC are rapidly becoming more than familiar with the term after another
week in which their club sailed close to extinction before receiving confirmation from its joint
administrator that it had permission to continue to trade and therefore play until the end of this
season.
Three years ago I moved to Yorkshire from East Anglia for work purposes: a move I share with one
very special former Ipswich Town player. Can you figure out who?!Leeds and Ipswich share a lot in their histories: Huge success in the past has brought respect to
both teams but the difficult financial times that followed have seen them slip down the league
tables in recent decades.

My preview for the Leeds game was such a stunning success that I have been asked to write again
on the subject. You will recall then we were playing the Yorkshire Grit (which is, as you will now
know, made up of coarse sand grains and small stones).
Against such [.
What's this strange, unfamiliar feeling? Oh yeah... it's Barnsley winning!
Is there anything quite like the terror and horror of supporting a team who are on a losing run?
Actually, yes, there is: it is the terror and horror that comes with supporting a team who are on a
winning run.

With Railway Harrogate having just scored a dramatic late equaliser on the 90-minute mark to
level the score at three apiece in their West Riding County Cup tie against Guiseley last night, it
looked for all the world like the game was heading to extra time.
Habib Beye is keen to stay at Doncaster Rovers for the rest of the season as he has no desire to
head back to his parent club.
The right-back joined the Yorkshire club on loan from Aston Villa until January, but he is hoping
to secure a longer move after making his first appearance in a 0-0 draw with Watford this weekend.
Boro were a completely different class to their West Yorkshire based opponents today, no
disrespect to Thackley who are a decent side, but today they could not live with the brilliance of
Boro. After today's performance I cannot imagine Rudy leaving Gary Hepples out of his future starting
line-up's, once again Gary was my man of the match, he rightly regained his place today at the
expense of Dean Windass, who was on the subs bench.
‘Football fans have been exposed to the type of policing historically that is probably
unfair and untargeted. I think it's evolved, I think it's moved on. My football unit police with
the best interests of football fans that are around safety and that's our principle driver. It's
not you and us at all.
Why some Football League clubs only have themselves to blame for dwindling
attendances
last week I phoned the box office of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club with what I believed
to be a routine enquiry. I am, I explained, a Barnsley fan who lives in London. The Socialist
Republic of South Yorkshire Super Reds (who are becoming less and less super by the week) are
visiting the Seagulls (who are plummeting from the sky in a manner similar to their visitors), I
explained, and I'm planning on attending the match.

As Swisslet correctly pointed out here, blanket and hysterical coverage of the Premier League
pretty much dominates the media these days, and so the achievements of lesser known clubs often go
unheralded.
Last night, Huddersfield Town drew 2-2 with Scunthorpe. It's a result that would have barely
registered with anyone outside Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, but it marked Huddersfield's 40th
unbeaten league match.
For this week's profile, we are made up to welcome David Wilkinson of the stunning Leeds United
Blog, The Scratching Shed (indeed, 'blog' seems such a humble word to describe such a multifaceted
treasure trove). Having spent this week pondering the controversy surrounding the Yorkshire club's
3-2 win over Peterborough at the weekend, David turns his attention to a man who returned from

Of all the people that have come to encircle modern football in recent years, few have received
the levels of vituperation that players' agents have. It often feels as if nothing good comes from
their involvement in the game, but this hasn't stopped their influence expanding dramatically in
recent years and it seems more likely than not that this sphere of influence will continue to grow
as contractual matters between players and clubs become more and more complex.
What on earth is happening at Leeds? I was at Elland Road last Saturday among 600 Pompey fans
and the change in atmosphere since last season was palpable. Last year, the atmosphere impressed
with fans in good voice and scarves whirling. This year, though, Elland Road is not a happy place,
evidenced by the draconian, 1980s style crowd control methods and the strangely messianic images of
the club's chairman in his seat flashed onto the big screen above our heads.
Why Swansea's first Premier win united a shattered community
Toward the end of the 1970s, Barnsley Football Club manager and former Leeds striker Allan
Clarke took his squad of lower-league journeymen down the mineshaft of one of the many South
Yorkshire collieries.
Leeds manager Simon Grayson admitted his side were taught a lesson by Manchester United last
night.
The West Yorkshire outfit approached their Carling Cup third-round tie at Elland Road with high
hopes of repeating their 2010 FA Cup triumph over United.
Instead, the contest was over by half-time as the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead which they
defended until the end.

Being a Yorkshire Blue nowadays I rely almost entirely on the coverage provided by
t'interweb and I don't mind telling you it made for dismal reading this weekend.
The trouble with not being able to make it to the games is that you have to rely on the opinions
and moods of others, which - in the aftermath of Saturday's match against Hull - was rather gloomy.

English Football League One side Huddersfield Town have unveiled their Umbro 2011/12 away kit. It
was modeled by the team's supporters across the West Yorkshire city during its launch earlier this
month. The club describes the new kit as follows: The kit is a move away from traditional
Huddersfield Town change strips but still maintains the [.

Grella in action for Leeds United.Leeds United forward Mike Grella is training with New York Cosmos, according to Sky Sports.
The New York native represented the US at youth level, and in 2009 he was picked 34th overall by
Toronto in the SuperDraft. Grella instead decided to try his luck in Europe, and signed a deal with
the Yorkshire club.
Here, in the second piece posted in our evolving Conversations series, Glen Wilson of that
gold-standard webzine Viva Rovers tells us where he thinks it went wrong for Doncaster this
season and talks about his thoughts in regards to the state of football in South Yorkshire and the
way things are going in the Football League blogosphere.
Having spent the past few days working in North Yorkshire, I've been able to engage in a guilty
pleasure of mine: football stadium rubbernecking on the train. Although perhaps not living up to
the heights of the Birmingham New Street - Nottingham special in which eagle-eyed passengers take
in the grounds of Tamworth, Burton and Derby within a mere 20 minutes, a debut ride between

In the end, it didn't matter what happened at Broadhall Way yesterday afternoon because
Chesterfield secured the League 2 title by beating Gillingham, therefore confirming that the
minimum position we would achieve would be 7th. With Torquay also losing in South Yorkshire against
Rotherham, Boro's point was enough to earn them 6th position and a playoff tie with Accrington
Stanley with the hope of progressing onto Old Trafford and ultimately League 1.

Faltering Whites finally run out of steam?
After yet another disappointing display today Leeds United have won just one of their last six
games heading into the final 4 games of the season. At the minute they are playing like a team
threatened with relegation rather than one destined for the premier league.
If you don't know Jay DeMerit's story, you soon will. A genuine rags-to-riches footy tale,
DeMerit went from an unknown American journeyman to captain of Watford in the English Premier
League. DeMerit's Hornets beat my hometown Leeds United in the 2006 promotion final in Cardiff,
condemning the proud Yorkshire side to another four years of lower league obscurity.

In a very one sided game, Scarborough Athletic ran out comfortable 7-1 winners last night in South
Yorkshire.Dinnington were a very poor side but that does not take anything away from what was a
great team performance from the Boro. Ryan Blott opened the scoring after just 9 minutes and Bill
Law doubled the lead just 3 minutes later, Ryan struck again on 18 minutes and a whitewash looked
to be on the cards.
Word reaches me that Andrew Gibney, the indefatigable force behind www.gibfootballshow.co.uk, has
launched a new podcast.
If football were a woman Andrew would wine and dine it, kick his girlfriend out of the house and
move the game into a boudoir resplendent with satin sheets and a mirrored ceiling.
The Northern League, Division One of which is Step 5 in the non-league pyramid, is a bit of a
world of its own. Despite its name, it's really a North East league, which was incorporated into
the pyramid only in 1991. Even since then only a handful of teams have ever been promoted from it.
They have some great team names Bedlington Terriers, Jarrow Roofing, Norton and Stockton Ancients
and, everyone's favourite, Billington Synthonia but most of these teams have been in the Northern
League for years with little thought of integrating into the wider pyramid.
Scarborough Athletic's trip to Dinington Town has been called off because of overnight frost in
South Yorkshire, so I thought I would take the 10 minute walk up the road to watch the Reserves in
their Humber league match against North Cave, as I passed the ground on my way home from
Scarborough earlier I noticed the nets were in place and I was looking forward to the game, but I
have checked on the official website and found that this game has also been cancelled because of
frost, strange decision really as the sun is shining, the frost has gone and the game had a 2.
Leeds Utd 1-3 Arsenal
A thoroughly satisfying evening in Yorkshire. With memories of the preceding Leeds and Ipswich
ties still fresh, I said to @feverpitch before the game started last night that we'd know which
Arsenal was present within five minutes of the whistle. Rather neatly, exactly five minutes had
elapsed when Arshavin and Chamakh ping-ponged the ball through to the waltzing Nasri, who scuttled
past a couple of players and sunk one into the bottom right corner.
Tonight Arsenal travel to Elland Road for the FA Cup replay against Leeds, and it is a reminder
that the Gunners didn't dispose of the Championship team in the first leg because Denilson gave
away a sloppy penalty and allowed the Yorkshire team to take the lead. Arsenal's captain Cesc
Fabregas appeared to be very angry [.
