Alberto Aquilani is in contention to make his long-awaited full Liverpool debut on Saturday as
Rafael BenÃtez looks to the £20m summer signing to reinvigorate the club's season against
Manchester City.
The Italy international has played only 21 minutes for Liverpool since arriving from Roma in
August, as a substitute against Birmingham City and Arsenal, because of his recovery from ankle
surgery plus illness.

Spain have just launched their home jersey for the 2010 World Cup and the design has a 1980s
feel about it. Adidas have once again manufactured this World Cup kit, which is the usual red with
a hint of blue on the sleeve and neck areas, and yellow Adidas stripes up the arms and shoulders.
The Adidas logo is featured on the top centre part of the shirt and the Spanish badge is on the
left of the shirt.

A few weeks ago, Don Balon named their top five hottest Spaniards an effort we wholeheartedly
support.
Votes were cast by female journalists and other members of sport media, and the winner's list is
to be expected:
nummy with a side of hotsauce.
Iker Casillas took their top spot as "superguapo"; the other selects are included after the jump
for your perusal.

The following list of elite midfield players in the world will exclude the likes of Lionel
Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka since they sometimes play as forwards or as support strikers
depending on the strategy deployed by their team. Kaka has previously played as a second striker
during his spell with Milan while both Messi and Ronaldo have played in various attacking positions
for their club (mostly on the wing though).

Rafael BenÃtez said last night that he would quit if Fernando Torres is sold against his will.
Liverpool's £245m debt has led to questions about whether their US owners, Tom Hicks and George
Gillett, would be tempted to sell, even if he was offered £100m for the striker.
"I'm confident it will never happen," the manager said.

As a child, I could never sleep on Christmas Eve. There was a greedy little materialist in me
who sneaked into the living room in the dark to count, shake and feel up all the presents under the
tree with my name on them and then stayed up all night trying to imagine what the morning would
really bring.

It would seem this vuvuzela thing is, at the very least, unpopular. As a direct result of its
popularity, of course. Xabi Alonso left the Confederations Cup poo-pooing the vuvuzela and its
effect on the field of play. The cacophony a bit too intense for such things as hearing the
whistles and one's teammates not things entirely insignificant.

Ever since I started watching football many years ago now, when it came time for the World Cup,
Spain were always considered a dangerous threat by many pundits that they would win the tournament,
only to let everyone down time and time again. Spain are likely to have one of the best selling
World Cup Jerseys in the tournament, but the best they have finished is 4th place in a World Cup
and that was in 1950.

A number of players can stake a claim for being part of the best team in the world at this early
period of the European domestic leagues. However, very few players standout the way those listed
below have in terms of their contribution to their team, their role as leaders, and certainly their
crucial involvement in their respective clubs.

Everywhere you look or listen, Rafa Benitez's ability to manage Liverpool Football Club is being
questioned. I've not been immune to criticising the Spaniard myself, as followers of the Soccerlens
Podcast will testify, but I'm far from alone in highlighting his deficiencies. Even Liverpool's
loyalist fans are split on whether the goatee-ed one is still the man they want to lead them
forward.

Rumours of the potential transfer of Javier Mascherano from Liverpool to Barcelona during the
winter transfer window are understood to be without any concrete foundation, according to Spanish
publication Sport.
Speculation surrounding the Argentina captain has continued throughout the season after he was
strongly linked with a summer move to Camp Nou and recent reports suggested that the players
representatives had reached an agreement on the personal terms of a winter move.

Yesterday, I looked at the real cost of Jan Kromkamp's transfer to Liverpool. Today, I attempt to

Alonso's transfer, a fee was not specified.

It has been revealed that Xabi Alonso may have been prevented from writing an open-letter to
Liverpool's fans when he left the club. Given the Spaniard's contribution to the club, I find this
to be very disappointing.
Both John Arne Riise and Luis Garcia wrote open letters to Liverpool fans when they left the club,
both of which were published on the official Liverpool FC website.

Amazingly, reports in the press today suggest that Lucas Lieva has been the subject of transfer

pass the ball to a team-mate and was roundly booed by the Anfield faithful every time he was near

Plenty of people have mourned the departure of Xabi Alonso.
He was a great player but hopefully Alberto Aquilani having made his home debut now will start to
fill that gap.
But the two players I think we should have kept are Sami Hyypia and Alvaro Arbeloa.
Ok, it's possibly with hindsight but we're missing a dominant centre half – as evidenced by
Birmingham's equaliser – and Sami is I'm told playing his socks off for Bayer Leverkusen, who are
top of the Bundesliga.
