Today's du Nord post is dedicated to one of our heroes: Muhammad Ali born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr
on this day, January 17, in 1942. Happy 70th my man!
STARTERSI spent 2 great days last week in Kansas City at the NSCAA Convention, including taking in the MLS
SuperDraft.
I'm currently looking into what the roles of the play-by-play announcer as well as the color
commentator truly are. I'll be speaking to and getting input from announcers from all over the
country with a high level of experience. Hopkins, Lalas, Dunseth, Wynalda and more will be weighing
with their own unique perspectives.
My SI.com article got quite a bit of response, and I've posted a few emails here that are pretty
representative overall.
From M.S.:
C'mon Andrea, everyone knows what a mean and nasty bastard Wynalda is -- he's lucky to still have a
job on the air with his bitter criticism of everyone and everything always leaking out all over the
place.
Big weekend for soccer in the United States with the Gold Cup Final, kick off of the Women's
World Cup and regular MLS action around the country. This includes the odd decision to run a
number of MLS matches while the Gold Cup Final was going forward in California.
All 32 matches of the Women's World cup will be televised in HD on the ESPN family of
networks.
On Saturday, the 2011 version of the Gold Cup will conclude in Southern Califormia with the much
anticipated matchup between the United States and Mexico. Before the tournament concludes, we
thought it worth touching on a number of business items from the CONCACAF event.
The tournament is a big revenue generator as it provides ex-pats from a number of countries the
rare opportunity to see the teams from their homelands playing live.
