UCLA's Sydney Leroux was the top pick of the Atlanta Beat during
the 2012 WPS Draft on Friday.
Forward Sydney Leroux, who currently is training with the U.S. Women's National Team in Los Angeles
trying to make the squad for the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament, was selected
as the top pick by the Atlanta Beat during Friday's 2012 WPS Draft at the NSCAA Convention in
Kansas City, Mo.
With the college regular season coming to a close, we thought this was a good time to dip into our
Video Vault and pull out this gem featuring (with apologies to the DiMartino sisters) perhaps the
two most successful sisters in U.S. Youth Women's National Teams history, Kristie and Samantha
Mewis.
Today is a travel day for the U.S. WNT as the players will fly from all parts of the USA - where
they have been enjoying a brief break since the end of the WPS season - to Kansas City to prepare
for their first match since the end of the WWC. That will take place at the sparkling new
LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, home to Sporting Kansas City of MLS, on Sept.
Many of the WNT players got nice welcomes when they returned home after the WWC, but this much
is clear: Redding, Calif. loves its hometown hero Megan Rapinoe. Rapinoe returned to this small
town in northern Northern California (Population: 90,000) this week and got a rousing reception,
making an appearance at her old middle school and being hosted at Jack's Grill (see below), a steak
house where her mom has worked for many years.
On the morning of May 9th, 2011 U.S. Soccer released the roster for this year's 2011 FIFA
Women's World Cup team in Germany. Who knew that a team so many "sports journalists" felt was in
disarray, could seemingly overnight turn things around. Odd that this collection of young women
transformed into a team that those same "experts" said they, "Never doubted them for a second.

Thank heavens for the WWC. For the players' obvious joy at simply being there. For the quality
of the football, which has surpassed expectation over and over again. For the competitiveness and
work ethic of each side, that made each fixture thrilling and unpredictable.

FIFA Women's World Cup Final: Two stories. One dream.
Story 1:
Japan. A thriving culture devastated by unstoppable power. A once strong body now undergoing the
most meticulous reconstruction.
By Eric Beard
The road has been a long one, but with an absolutely fantastic Women's World Cup coming to a
close there has never been more at stake for the United States and Japan. But perhaps more
importantly, there has never been such potential for the growth (or revival or whatever you want to
call it) of women's football.

It all comes down to Sunday. We've all heard it before (many, many times).
Japan USA: Sunday, ESPN, 2:45 PM
The US women are in the World Cup final for the first time since 1999. Many wondered if they
would have a letdown in their semifinal match against France following an emotional quarterfinal
win over Brazil.

How come the weekend seems further away than ever on a Friday morning? Allow us to divert your
attention from the responsibilities of being a grown-up for a few minutes with a some perky stories
from the past week.
Many readers have sent notes asking for some comments on the officiating in the WWC, particularly
about some strange decisions, some even stranger indecisions, and even retaken penalty-kicks. But I
have to admit that I have not seen one single...
Despite not being eligible to work the semi-finals due to USA's participation, American referee
Kari Seitz has been held over by FIFA for the last four matches of the tournament, solidifying her
place as one of the top female officials in the world.
Seitz may or may not work the final or third place match, but to make the last stage of the WWC is
of course an honor for her and U.
One has to wonder how the remaining four teams in the Women's World Cup can top the quarterfinal
games we saw last weekend. Three of the four quarterfinals needed more than 90 minutes to be
decided. Two went to PKs. We saw the defending champs and host nation eliminated, the sport's
best player was eliminated, we had last minute goals to send games to overtime.
Extended highlights of the USA/Brazil match, along with individual highlights of the big
plays and all the penalty kicks, can be found here. And are totally awesome.
This was a moment.
All the stories about this moment that make it about something big: Women's soccer, American
pride, personal glory or redemption, desire, belief, composure.
Union
CSN is going to show the Union's match against Everton but the showdown with Real Madrid gets
the ESPN Deportes and ESPN3.
The Union's Kevin Kinkead breaks down the team's performance using MLS Chalkboards.
Mark your calendars: The Union are traveling to Harrisburg in August to face the City
Islanders!
It's tough to sift through 122-plus minutes of a match filled with so much action, excitement
and intrigue and distill it down to a few details. But here are the five major events from
today's match that shaped the outcome of the game.
-Brazil's Early Miscue
The United States jumped out to an early lead thanks to a flub by Brazil just 74 seconds into
the game.
This years Womens World Cup has caused one or two people to comment on the nature of the sixteen
team tournament. The WWC is set to be expanded to twenty-four nations for the next competition in
Canada in four years time, but this years competition has been taut and exciting all killer, as
some might say, and no filler.
There was no more margin for error in today's WWC quarterfinal game between the US and Brazil.
The team that lost goes home, while the winning team books a ticket to the semifinals on
Wednesday. Twitter and Facebook blew up as the match progressed and more and more fans logged on
to see what was happening.

Sure, Copa América has Messi, Forlán, and Neymar. Yes, it will be a very interesting test
for Mano Menezes. Yeah, it's nice to see the young Brazilian and Argie talent that's been shining
in leagues around the world. And I'll grant you that, despite lackluster performances from Brazil
in its first game and Argentina in its first two, there are good reasons to expect both to put on
an offensive show in this Copa America.
The quarterfinals of the WWC are starting this weekend and the US will play Brazil on Sunday
at 11:30. The match will air on ESPN, Galavasion and ESPN3.com. Ian Darke will do the play by
play for US audiences. The tournament has not made a significant impression on the US sports
psyche. Although the games have been televised and promoted, this US team has not captured the
imagination of the American public.
George Vecsey on the NY Times blog:
Sweden and the United States just reminded me why women's soccer stands by itself as a
special sport. The women never stop playing. Never mind technique or tactics, I am talking here
about heart.
...
Sure, the women will try to sell a foul by grabbing the wounded area and flashing a quick grimace,
but if the ref doesn't buy it (and the Japanese ref seemed wise to all that Wednesday) these
athletes jump up and start running again.

The second set of games got underway from Group A as a crowd of more than 50,000 came out to
cheer on the home squad in Frankfurt. France and Germany each got a win to secure a berth in the
quarterfinals.

On paper, you would struggle to find two more different teams than USA an North Korea. The United
States roster features thirteen players with World Cup experience. The North Koreans, by contrast,
combine for an average age under 21 and only one player who has made a previous trip to the big
stage.
Lauren Cheney scored a huge goal for the USA in the opening game of the 2011 WWC against North
Korea, but before that, she and Tobin Heath stood for yet another of our WNT Player Profiles.
Here's a list of Official U.S. Soccer Bars have confirmed that they will be showing the WWC
matches:
O'Brien's Pub, San Diego
Rira Irish Pub, Burlington, Vermont as well as Providence, Rhode Island and Portsmouth, N.H.
Mickey Byrnes, Hollywood, Fla.
Mulligan's on First, Hoboken, N.
Time for kickoff!
2 - I'm ready for the match with the breakfast of champions, real whipped cream and strawberries on
a chocolate brownie - Breakfast at Germany, the AC version.
3 - Corner for Japan, nothing comes of it.
4 - Nearly a corner straight into the goal from New Zealand there.
France 1-0 Nigeria
Nigeria elected to sit back for the first 20 minutes, respecting the French attack. France
still created a number of opportunities, but could not get a final touch in the box to produce the
goal.
Nigeria should have been up 1-0 when Oparanozie's good run on goal down the right side ended with a
shot rolling wide.

With the next World Cup still three years away and the US Men's National team putting us to
sleep in the Gold Cup, wouldn't it be nice if there was something exciting going on this
summer?
What's that you say, Amy Rodriguez? Something exciting in Germany? But what?
The Women's World Cup kicks off this Sunday and runs until the big final on July 17.
Sunday begins the sixth edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup with Germany
playing first time hosts and pre-tournament favorites. The United States (two-time winners and
current #1 in the FIFA rankings), Brazil, Norway (one-time winner), and China are all regular
contenders for the world's best.
The U.S. WNT left Austria this morning after an excellent eight-day training camp and arrived in
Dresden, Germany around 1 p.m. in the afternoon to a very nice welcome from the organizers for this
WWC venue. We'll have some video and pics of the USA's travel to Germany up soon, but first one
last look back at one of the most beautiful places (mountain category) many of the U.
