Curt it out Swansea City captured former Manchester City youngster Curtis Obeng from non-league
Wrexham yesterday. Brendan Rodgers' first task is to put all the local branches of McDonalds on red
alert to make sure his new signing doesn't ruin his nutritional programme with a two-at-a-time
burger fix.
Over recent months, we have called upon regular followers of non-league football in order to guess
at which players might stand a chance of forging a career in the Football League, should they wish
to take the opportunity. First up was Michael Hudson; the proprietor of The Accidental Groundhopper
website running the rule over the Northern League.

Former Colorado Rapids head coach Gary Smith is headed back to England.
The man who took charge of the Rapids' surprising 2010 MLS Cup run has been hired as manager of
League One side Stevenage FC. Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace said Smith's ability to produce
success despite a low budget with the Rapids was a major reason for the hire.
We have five matches for you this evening, from the Blue Square Premier to Division One Central
of the Southern League, and finishing off with the Premier Division of the Super League in
Scotland. First up is a match that we have already mentioned on this site today, the Blue Square
Premier match between Wrexham and Kettering Town.

Two matches in the Blue Square Premier brought together four clubs from directly opposite ends
of the football spectrum yesterday and, while the results of those matches were hardly unexpected,
it was difficult not to feel at the end of this week that these were not as important as the fact
that the matches had taken place in the first place.

Rockin' Robins Non-league Wrexham were a whisker away from pulling off an FA Cup shock after taking
Championship side Brighton to a penalty shootout in their third round replay. Goalkeeper Joslain
Mayebi did his best to put off the Seagulls' penalty takers with a bizarre goal-line dance. But it
didn't have the desired effect as [.
There is, perhaps, little surprising in the fact that the most confusing tie of the Third Round
of the FA Cup should involve Wrexham. The Blue Square Premier club the last non-league club still
involved in this year's competition have had possibly the most convoluted twelve months of any side
in the entire English league system, and this extended into the arrangements for this match against
Brighton & Hove Albion, following their 1-1 draw at The American Express Community Stadium a week
and a half ago.
Newcastle United were the second club out of the hat this afternoon, and we are drawn against
Wrexham or Brighton away in the 4th round of the FA Cup . Sunderland are drawn at home to
Middlesbrough, and the three northeast teams were in the first four drawn out of the hat. It may

That the first weekend of the new year should see the coming together of these two clubs is
entirely appropriate. Brighton & Hove Albion and Wrexham had differing experiences of 2011, but for
both clubs the year ended with the feeling of a clean slate having been managed for both clubs. For
Wrexham, the club is finally in the hands of the only people that could reasonably left in charge
of it after years of mismanagement, the Wrexham Supporters Trust.

The FA Cup Third Round this weekend sees a handful of fascinating ties for the non-league clubs
still in the competition, with Blue Square Premier title chasers Fleetwood Town taking on
Blackpool, Tamworth travelling to Goodison Park to play Everton and Salisbury City of the Blue
Square South making the journey to Bramall Lane to play Sheffield United.
Normal service is now to resume after the somewhat chaotic Christmas and New Year matches, but
we're going to spend a little time catching up with the last of the festive highlights from over
the course of the last three days or so. We have six matches lined up for you this evening. From
the Blue Square Premier, we have highlights of the matches between Wrexham & AFC Telford United and
Forest Green Rovers.

For the second part of our Non-League Videos Of The Week, we have two matches from the Blue
Square Bet Premier Division. At the top of the table, Wrexham are continuing to hold Fleetwood Town
at bay and, while Fleetwood had a Lancashire derby match at home against third placed Southport on
Boxing Day, Wrexham, who are now owned by their supporters, made the relatively short trip to
Shropshire to play another supporter-owned team, AFC Telford United, and over four thousand people
turned out at New Bucks Head for the match.

How times have changed. So many times in the past the FA Cup giant-killers, Yeovil Town, now
stalwart members of League One were knocked out themselves this evening, at home in an FA Cup
Second Round replay, by a non-league club. The Glovers had been comfortable in the first match
against Blue Square Premier promotion chasers Fleetwood Town with a two goal lead, but two late
Fleetwood goals earned a replay at Huish Park and this evening the non-league club finished off the
job with a two goal win that hands them arguably the tie of their dreams at the start of
January.
Twenty years ago in January, Wrexham AFC managed one of the great FA Cup surprises of all time.
They had finished the previous season at the bottom of the Football League and had only been spared
relegation to the Football Conference on account of the League expanding its size, while their
Third Round opponents in that competition, Arsenal, had ended the previous season as the champions
of England.
Celebrations, due to the sad and untimely death of the manager of the national team at the
weekend, were perhaps more muted at The Racecourse Ground this evening than they might otherwise
have been. There should, however, be a pause this evening for Wrexham supporters to celebrate a
life well lived as well as the opportunity for a rebirth of their club following the news this
afternoon that the authorities have finally granted their approval for the take-over of the club by
the Wrexham Supporters Trust.

Herzegovina - Portugal at 2pm and Turkey - Croatia at 4pm. ESPN Deportes also has the Ukraine -

Wrexham at 2:30pm.
With a team that is top of the table, a new manager that has just won the Manager Of The Month
award for his division and a winnable FA Cup tie coming up in a couple of weeks, these should be
happy times for the supporters of Wrexham Football Club. As regular readers will be aware, however,
very little at The Racecourse Ground is as it seems and the proposed take-over of the club by the
Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) has now hit the buffers again over clauses relating to liability for
outstanding debts, which are being treated so seriously by the Football Association and the
Football Conference that, once again, the WST take-over of the club might not go through.
Of all the people that have come to encircle modern football in recent years, few have received
the levels of vituperation that players' agents have. It often feels as if nothing good comes from
their involvement in the game, but this hasn't stopped their influence expanding dramatically in
recent years and it seems more likely than not that this sphere of influence will continue to grow
as contractual matters between players and clubs become more and more complex.
We have two sets of non-league videos of the week lined up for you this week. Earlier this
evening, we had a quick round-up of matches from the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Now, to
follow that up, we have a quick round-up of two matches from the Blue Square Premier, followed by
one match from the Blue Square South.
As a fan of a Non-League side it's very rare that I have anyone to talk to about the team I
support. I completely understand why some people will have little or nothing to say about the
Non-League but what really gets on my nerves is when I hear people writing it off as being a poor
level of football.
Patience brings its own rewards, and the press release issued this afternoon confirming that
agreement has now been reached to ensure the take-over of Wrexham Football Club by the Wrexham
Supporters Trust is certainly news that has been worth waiting for. Over the last year or so, this
club has been the source of one of British football's hardest soap operas, featuring a series of
twists and turns which has, at times, seemed so bizarre as to be scarcely credible.
At least, some may choose to reflect, the team is still winning. Wrexham went to Grimsby Town
yesterday and came returned with a comfortable 3-1, which left them at the top of the Blue Square
Premier on goal difference from second placed Gateshead with a quarter of the season now played.
This result was, however, little comfort at the end of another week which has seen tumult behind
the scenes at the club and the departure of a manager who was starting to come of age in his
position.
Dean Saunders may have scored goals wherever he's been, but his heart - and footballing philosophy
- will always belong to Liverpool.
The former Welsh international told Goals on Sunday that it was always his dream to follow in his
father's footsteps and play at Anfield.
He did just that when the club paid a then-British record £2.
It was Non-League Day this weekend, as you will all now be thoroughly aware, so to close up on
this it's time for this week's Non-League Videos Of The Week, this week featuring no fewer than six
matches, from the Blue Square Premier, the Blue Square South, the Northern Premier League, the
Southern League and the FA Cup.
This weekend the saga of Trust ownership at Wrexham extends. Plymouth Argyle struggle to find an
ownership solution to coming out of administration. In the tales of duplicity and ineptness that
abound behind these stories, the arguments in favour of the Supporters Trust movement are
strengthened. Supporters' Direct have made clear and cogent arguments that substantiate these
arguments in their recent briefing papers.

It's Non-League Day tomorrow, but you already knew that, didn't you? The brain-child of Mike
Bayly occasionally of this parish and James Doe is celebrating its second annual event this
weekend, and the extent to which non-league football has embraced the idea has been refreshing, to
say the least.
As ever, it was down to the supporters of the club to get to what looks like somewhere near the
bottom of what has been going on. It was probably too much to hope that, after a unanimous vote at
their SGM last week, the Wrexham Supporters Trust would merely be allowed to get on with the job of
completing their due diligence and purchasing Wrexham Football Club, but the way in which the story
has continued to expand out over the last six days is enough to start to cast doubt over whether
several of the key players in this ridiculously distended story and not, as we will make clear,
players from the side of the trust organisation itself have an agenda which is intent on torpedoing
the bid for their own ends.
Two clubs are facing deadlines in the near future after months of insecurity, but while Wrexham
now seem likely to be headed towards a brighter future, Plymouth Argyle supporters are probably at
the point now of not believing anyone until the take-over of their club is ratified by the Football
League.

I think we can all agree football is broken. Whilst millions of pounds are being spent on
players like Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll, famous clubs like Wrexham are struggling to
survive. My ten point plan will not save football in its entirety, but it will help make it a darn
sight more enjoyable.

Plus ça change. As ever, it impossible to even attempt to frame the start of the new season in
the Blue Square Premier without talking, in more detail than even we might particularly want to,
about the financial condition football's de facto fifth division. This summer saw the expulsion and
subsequent folding of Rushden & Diamonds, which was followed by the bizarre and in some respects
unedifying sight of Imraan Ladak hastily moving their former rivals Kettering Town into their
ground, a chaotic couple of months at Wrexham which led to a desperate race against time in order
to keep the club alive, and the lingering suspicion that there are a number of clubs playing at
this level that are still struggling to come to terms with the new, tougher financial regulations
that have been introduced in this league by the Football Conference.
