I've stayed away from writing about the labor strife in Major League Soccer to this point for a
variety of reasons. Chief among them is that, in reality, I'm no different than you. Despite having
served as a reporter that covered a team in the league for a while, I don't have any inside
information about what proposals have been put forth, and which side such proposals would be more
beneficial for.

David Beckham's World Cup is more than likely over as he has apparently torn his Achilles Tendon
in a Serie A match this weekend. Basically, the English are crying right now, but I think it's
time for the English side to get it together and make this into a rallying cry.

It's official Real Madrid is the New York Yankees of international Soccer. It didn't take long
after their loss in the Round of 16 in the Champion's League for "vote of confidence" to come out
and not much longer for the rumors about a new manager.

The United States Soccer Federation held the functional equivalent of a shotgun wedding
yesterday, with Sunil Gulati playing the role of the backwoods daddy holding a Remington double
barrel 12 gauge.
And they say chivalry is dead.
When the confetti settled and the happy couple were finally headed down the road in the three-tone
87 Ford pickup, it was comfortimg to know that amongst all the hysterical blather of the past few
weeks there was at least one thing that the "The Sky is Falling" crowd got right:
Neither USL not NASL will be sanctioned.

I waited until Friday to write about the MLS Cup Final because I was sort of disappointed by the
way the game unfolded. Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for Jason Kreis and his
squad and I must admit they were the better team last Sunday night. But, the game was very
unsatisfying for several reasons.

The front pages of Salt Lake City's major newspapers this morning, hours after Real Salt Lake
became the second #8 seed in history to win MLS Cup:
Was it the greatest game ever? No. Finals rarely are. LA had the better of things early, but
Real hung in there again, and Cup MVP Nick Rimando came up huge in the penalty
kick shootout (more than you can say for league MVP Landon Donovan).

Kudos to RSL for arranging a $300 non-stop flight for RSL fans from Salt Lake City to Seattle

flights are available at $99 per flight.

51 responses to Jeff Plush's letter to fans on the Rapids' blog as of 10am November 5. It shows
there are some passionate fans out there. Not that I ever had any doubt about that. What I do have
doubts over are the very future of this club and here's why.
I have never really understood why sports trophies are given to the owners of clubs when they win
championships.

My apologies to one and all for the lateness of the post. The combination of the deciding game of
the World Series last night (the bad guys won) and all-day meetings today have left me scrambling a
bit for this column. Now, by scrambling, I don't mean that I'm scrambling for things to write -
anyone who has been reading for any length of time will realize that I'm rarely at a loss for words

JordanCornblog's predictions proved slightly inaccurate, perhaps because the biking didn't start
soon enough in the series. Or perhaps because she didn't wear her Utley shirt for those last two
games ... or the Phillies hat ... or maybe the barometric pressure was all wrong (that was the
problem the year the Eagles lost to the Pats in the Superbowl .

With J Hutcherson -- For those of you that spent last night in the company of the World Series,
that was a pretty good lesson on the why for the best out of seven games. Aside from the extra
revenue courtesy of extended playoffs, baseball, hockey, and basketball set it up so it takes more
than just one dominant night or a fluke win.

sporting pursuits this week. As I write my hometown Philadelphia Phillies (that's Major League

them. And since they know me as somebody who's fanatical about the sport, they inevitably come to
me when they have questions.

So, as a native of the Philadelphia area here in the US I'm confronted with something of a dilemma.
Growing up in Philadelphia you are generally brought up with a healthy (and some would say
unhealthy) bit of mania for the local professional sports teams across all major American sports.
As a kid who played just about every sport available growing up and growing up in an era (late 70s
and early 80s) when all of the local teams were challenging for championships I formed life-long
attachments to my teams - the Phillies in baseball (that's the defending World Series champion
Phillies I might add); the 76ers in basketball; the Flyers in hockey; and the Eagles in football
(our version).

The inaugural World Football Challenge begins tomorrow on American soil, in the Bay Area. Much
like the "World Series of Football" in 2005, this event conflicts directly with our region's
Continental Championship which also is contested on American soil. But unlike that tournament which
was promoted by SUM and involved MLS teams, this event shuts out the American club game as if it
does not exist.

bonds with others.
