CHICAGO (June 19, 2012) – Former U.S. Men's National Team head coach Alketas "Alkis" Panagoulias
passed away Monday in Vienna, Va., at the age of 78.
The native of Thessaloniki, Greece, led the U.S. MNT from 1983-85, and also guided the 1984 Olympic
team. He would later manage Greece from 1992-94 and lead his country to its first FIFA World Cup
appearance in 1994.

Associated Press Writer Nancy Armour has more on the late blooming Bruin and her World Cup
dream:
HEIDELBERG, Germany (AP) -- When 11-year-old Lauren Cheney and her teammates went to
watch the United States play Nigeria at the 1999 World Cup, they brought along playbooks so they
could write down what they would do when it was their turn on soccer's biggest stage.
New Zealand (in white) were unbeaten in their group but still failed to qualify for the knock
out stages
Stoppage Time International Football Blog reviews the fortunes of each continent in
this year's FIFA World Cup. We begin with a look at Oceania who could only field one entrant in the
competition and were proudly represented by New Zealand.
This week's guest on the Jared Montz Soccer Podcast is Andy Barron.. Andy is an Investment
Adviser from New Zealand and was one of the few non full time professionals selected to the All
Whites for this year's World Cup in South Africa. Playing for the New Zealand National Team he
made his World Cup appearance against Italy in their massive 1-1 draw.
Peter Wilt celebrating the US win over Algeria with the World Cup Trophy in one hand and the
"Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous" in the other. Fake World Cup Trophy, real joy.
In his weekly column, Milwaukee Wave President & CEO Peter Wilt gives us his World Cup
memories from an indoor star on the big stage to Bob Bradley's goalkeeping dilemma.
The USA won its group at the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1930 (that's 80 years ago),
and for first time ever in a four-team group. The win marked the first point and win for the U.S.
in the third group game at the FIFA World Cup in eight tries.
It was the first time the USA has gone unbeaten in Group play during a World Cup.
In 1998, as the French team prepared to play their first World Cup match, they heard singing
from the opposing team's locker room. The Bafana Bafana in their first World Cup appearance after
the end of apartheid, fielding an integrated team were gearing up to play with song, and as the two
team's marched down the tunnel out onto the pitch, they continued singing, sending echoes through
the halls.

It's been a while for the All Whites of New Zealand. This is their first World Cup appearance
since 1982. That's great and all, but pundits are saying that this New Zealand squad is by far the
worst team in the tournament. Although they've shown some positive signs leading up to the World
Cup, they have a huge uphill battle ahead of them if they want to get out of the group.
In January I predicted that the United States would fulfill its 1998 pledge to ensure that the
United States men's national team would become a legitimate threat to win the FIFA World Cup by
2010. Now that the time has come to put up, I am boldly, and perhaps irrationally, predicting
the US will not only challenge f0r the World Cup, but will actually WIN the 2010 FIFA World
Cup!
I should turn this into a podcast, because it would be funny to hype it to death and then
read out URLs for half an hour. But the only good theme song I can think of is "Pretty Ballerina,"
and that's a wall of fire I'm not prepared to step across. Thus, our pact with prose is renewed for
one more outing.
Cameroon World Cup 2010 Preview #17 (Group E) is a post from: Just Football
Cameroon World Cup 2010 Preview
For many, the Cameroon side that lit up Italia 90 were the perfect underdogs. With their
tireless workrate, their obviously brilliant team spirit, and their brilliantly gifted leader and
inspiration, Roger Milla, they captured the hearts of the footballing world, completely bucking the
stereotypical view that Africans were physical beasts with no real footballing ability who relied
on superstition.
The best American striker – and a guaranteed starter against England on June 12 – was not
destined to be Jozy Altidore, Charlie Davies or (certainly) Robbie Findley. The best American
striker is New Jersey-born, rap-music loving, Playstation-playing Giuseppe Rossi. Unfortunately,
four years ago Rossi turned down the opportunity to play with the US to make himself available for
Italy, where he father was born and where he holds a passport to go with his American
citizenship.
With the World Cup not long passed and the Euro 2012 qualifiers starting this evening, The
Promised Land asks what's more important: Supporting your club? Or supporting your country? As
ever, Ross and Gerard have
contrasting views.

Honduras vs Chile, Group H, Nelspruit, Wednesday 16 June
No David Suazo and no Carlos Costly leaves the attacking burden on the legs of veteran Carlos
Pavon. Attacking midfielder Julio Cesar de Leon was also ruled out by a muscle injury.
Maybe the least anticipated match of World Cup 2010. For neutrals anyway. For both Slovakia and
New Zealand it was arguably the most important game of Group F, being Slovakia's opportunity to
start strong and pick up the points needed to compete for second place, and New Zealand's best
chance of getting something other than a defeat from their trip to South Africa.
U.S. national team legends Claudio Reyna and Tony Meola were the easiest selections in the
latest ballot for the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and voters agreed, making them the headliners
in the Hall's Class of 2012.
Reyna received 96 percent of the voting and Meola received 90 percent of the voting to headline
a class that also includes former U.
A little over a decade ago, South Melbourne FC took part in the FIFA Club World Championship as
champions of Oceania, trying their luck in a group containing England's Manchester United, Brazil's
Vasco da Gama and Mexico's Nexaca. South Melbourne could then claim to be Australia's most
successful club, winners of four National Soccer League titles.

A new era starts Wednesday when Jurgen Klinsmann makes his debut as United States National Team
coach against old rivals Mexico at Lincoln Financial Field. The friendly in Philadelphia will be
the first game for the USA since losing to Mexico in the Gold Cup final in June.

There are many things that will be remembered about the 2010-2011 Serie A season, both fondly
and infamously. Of course, people will remember Milan's Scudetto and Bari's relegation, Inter and
Roma's thrashings in the Champions' League and Napoli's dramatic late goals. Here's a series that
focuses on some of the other things that should be remembered about a fantastic season, full of
both the bizarre and the unbelievable.
As if you weren't already fired up about tonight's winner-goes-to-the-World-Cup quarterfinal
match against host Guatemala? We've got some pregame tidbits to help make sure that all of your
watch party conversations are substantial:
While the U.S. will be vying for its eighth-straight FIFA U-20 World Cup appearance, Guatemala
will be looking for its first.
Mesut Ozil. We could just fold him up and pop him our pocket, couldn't you? (Getty Images/Daylife)
It's been a hell of a year for Mesut Ozil. A debut World Cup appearance in which he terrorised
defences and humiliated England (a pastime that seems to be catching on, we note.) A big money
signing for Real Madrid.
When it comes to exiting a World Cup, there are ways and ways.
You can do it in disarray, disharmony and dishonour, as the French did on Wednesday morning. You
can do it in heartbreaking fashion, as Slovenia did (unbeknownst to themselves) this morning. Or,
you can do it with immense pride and a reaffirmed belief in your own abilities, as the Socceroos
did.
Just as France qualified for South Africa in controversy, so they leave
South Africa in similar circumstances as players brought shame and disgrace to the French Football
Association, after refusing to train the day before their crucial tie with host nation South Africa
which they subsequently lost on a scoreline of 2-1, to end a shameful and disgraceful World Cup
appearance.
Coming off his first ever World Cup appearance, US midfielder Jose Torres is hoping to build off
his performance against Slovenia and help the US in its attempt to advance to the knockout stages.
