Wonder goals
By Ollie Irish
Arsene Wenger described Lionel Messi as a PlayStation character. And here is the unreal Leo,
scoring a cracker on PES:
In all my PES years, I never scored with a rabona. Pfff.

I don't care which part of his leg it came off (lower shin? it doesn't matter), this unique goal
simply had to be on this list. So many so-called wonder goals are no more than well-struck thumps
from 25-30 yards out, but this was something I'd never seen before (though there are similarities
to Gus Poyet's joyous, flying scissor-kick for Chelsea against Sunderland), something utterly
creative and almost impossible to replicate.

This is the second wonder goal by The Ginger Ninja in this list (he also scored No.9 see link
below), and what a stupendous, gobsmacker of a strike it is (apologies for crap video
quality)...
Pick. That. Out.
As several YouTube commenters have pointed out, this must rank as one of the 'truest' strikes
ever seen.

People complained that our 'Spot the Genius' competition was too easy
Lionel Messi last week became the youngest player in Barcelona's history to
score 100 goals for the club. He then bagged his 101st goal, in the same game, namely Barca's 4-0
demolition of Sevilla.

As a Spurs fan, of course I always love it when former Arsenal players remind Gooners of their
quality especially the ones, like Flamini, who were let go in their prime (before it, even).
So here's 'Flammers', or whatever nickname he was given by the Arsenal-supporting,
espresso-sipping Justins who dwell in Islington ('Matty' is more likely), scoring a rather fine
strike for Milan against lowly Novara a third division side in the Coppa Italia:
Nice.
"Remember me?"
Reminiscent of Paolo di Canio's more esteemed volley from a narrow angle (which may or may not
appear higher up this list), Bartlett's strike is just perfect the long, diagonal pass followed by
the sweetest volley you'd ever wish to see. Anyone who has ever played football will know how
difficult it is to hit a ball that's dropping out of the sky from 50 yards away this well.
This goal sums up the casual brilliance of Pires. First there is the wrong-footing flick,
reminiscent of Gazza's set-up for his goal against Scotland at Euro '96, followed by an impudent
lobbed finish over the head of none other than Peter Schmeichel, a keeper who had foiled the
Gunners in a Man Utd shirt on many occasions.
Featuring the most fleeting glimpse of Sparky's incredibly naff trophy cabinet/sideboard...
"Boof. Stick that in your technical area, Arsene!"
See, Hughes could play a bit, with his famously strong ankles. Shame he's turned into one of the
most colourless, dour managers around, and a bit of a wind-up merchant too.
Poor defending by Lechia but you can't deny the quality of the finish by Slask's Gancarczyk. The
game ended 1-1. [@ 101GreatGoals]...
Gokul's precise finish, made after an overlapping run down the right wing, was the perfect way to
end to a brilliant counter attack. Even Roberto Carlos, who was a key player in the move and who
might have shot...
LONG SHOOOOOOOOOT! Holy sushi, that is one brilliant finish, just as impressive as David Beckham's
famous lob against Wimbledon, or Xabi Alonso's effort against Newcastle Utd. If you're interested,
Uesato plays for Consadole Sapporoin the J-League's second tier. His goal...

Diego showed wonderful poise in the penalty area to score on his Juventus debut, in the Italian
team's Peace Cup match against Seongnam of Korea. This is the sort of ability he showed regularly
in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen:...
Textbook counter-attack topped off with a sparkling finish. Shame about Paraiba's horror hair
though....
Just a goal of absolute beauty and as fine an entry into Pies' canon of forgotten wonder goals as
you could ever hope to see; King Keggy's involvement in it is key. And what a lovely Southampton
kit that...
The USA has never lost a group match in the history of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. That record was
severely tested by Haiti this weekend, when only a brilliant Stuart Holden strike in injury time
saved the pre-tournament favourites from...
Our chums at The Spoiler claimed that this beautiful goal was scored by the Falcao, i.e. the Art
Garfunkel lookalike who played alongside Zico and Socrates in the Eighties. But unless my eyes
deceive me, the Falcao who scored...
Shame no one was there to see it Fantastic strike by Zanetti (who is no relation to Javier of
Internazionale), but no Juventus fans saw it live -Â their league game at home against Atalanta on
Sunday was played in front...
Another gong for C-Ron's trophy cabinet "In my opinion, I think it's a fantastic goal." Yes,
Cristiano, it is a fantastic goal, but there's no need to spell it out. And it didn't win three
points, you dunderhead -Â it helped...
Njanka's FWG deserved to win this World Cup group game for Cameroon, but Toni Polster equalised for
Austria in the 90th minute, the party pooper.
Yes, that Jose Mourinho Crunching tackle... check. Mazy dribble... check. Cool finish with outside
of boot... check. Crap goal celebration... check. My favourite footy video in ages... check mate.

Just look at Avia keeper Eduardo Martini frantically weighing up his options. He eventually settles
on belting it as hard as he can, and I bet he is glad he did now. One of those bizarre kicks of the
turf and a loop over the Parana keeper later, and Eduardo is a goalscoring hero.
David James, consider yourself bamboozled Like all England friendlies, last night's match against
the Czech Republic, was depressing and pointless. At least Marek Jankulovski had the decency to
light up proceedings with this moment of class. Thanks Marek....

Greuther Furth midfielder Heinrich Schimdtgal mesmerises five Karlsruhe
defender's before blasting an un-stoppable shot past keeper Dirk Orlishausen in their 2-2
draw in the Bundesliga Second Tier.
No less a publication than the New York Times took note of Deuce's wonder goal against
Stoke earlier this week (watch it here), a small but sure sign that there is a growing appetite for
football/soccer in the States.
The NYTÂ ran a blog post yesterday titled "Spectacular Dempsey Goal Raises Eyebrows, and His
Reputation".
Shazam! This goal won the match for Bahrain in their recent World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan.
A strike fit to win any game, even one against Uzbekistan....
And he was wearing rock and roll shoes! The Kasabian guitarist apparently once harboured ambitions
of playing up front for Leicester City and on this evidence there is no reason why he couldn't
leave his rock 'n' roll lifestyle behind...
