Sawa potentially begins her Ballon d'Or reign as Messi continues his own, picking up his third
in as many years.
If history is anything to go by, expect 2011 Women's World Cup winner Homare Sawa to be
collecting her second Ballon d'Or prize this time next year. Marta had won five years running as
the top female player in the world, but no more.
On this week's main listening report we look back at some of the big stories from the football
world in 2011. This is part two which will focus on July to December.
There's a lot of things about USA Women's National Team striker Abby Wambach
especially here- that screams "Ellen DeGeneres!" From their wackiness to
similar hairstyles, Abby can easily pass off as Ellen's footballing twin. Yesterday, Abby spoke up
about the Women's World Cup final to Japan en route to this awesome photo shoot she did in
Hollywood, admitting the US Women's team has come a long way from that loss.

The European football season gets under way this month but this does not mean that no football
has taken place during July and August. The Copa America, The Women's World Cup, World Cups at U-17
and U-20 levels, as well as major domestic leagues including Brazil, Argentina, the MLS and the
J-League have all seen football action this summer.
Obama Family, WWCEvery now and again you just have to step back and marvel at what soccer means to
different people. Passion, desire, fun and sport are all wrapped up into the experience for so many
people in so many different ways. I thought I'd compile a few pictures here to show some of the
better ones I've seen of late.

In the latest Philly Soccer Show podcast, KYW's Greg Orlandini and the PSP's Adam Cann are
talking Union and USWNT.
In part one, Greg and Adam discuss the win over New England, which gave the Union sole
possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.
It is always sad when a World Cup ends. No more matches at all hours of the day, no more
constant media coverage, no more excitement with new heros daily emerging from obscurity. This
year's 2011 Women's World Cup was as entertaining an affair as we have seen from this (or any other
tournament) in quite some time.

How could you not be pulling for the USWNT after that run to the final? The breathtaking win
against all odds vs. Brazil. The late dominant surge against France. My girls teams were talking
about it all summer and were pumped for the final. I had encouraged them to watch every game they
could watching players off the ball, how they moved, how they reacted.
- Keith Hickey Like many of you, I watched the Final of the Women's World Cup yesterday. It was a
pretty damn heartbreaking loss. To go up like that twice, it just seemed like destiny. These were
our girls, out there representing our country. They were supposed to come home to magazine covers
and Letterman appearances and Wheaties boxes.
Japan captain Homare Sawa celebrating her country's triumph after defeating the United
States on penalties
The intangibles often get overlooked, however, the sheer mental strength Japan showed to just
keep going despite being dominated early on and going down a goal on two occasions was
remarkable.
The United States Women's National Team captured the hearts of their country and likely several
more. In the course of their run to the World Cup final, they overcame many challenges including a
double overtime PK shootout to Brazil. The team improved with each game, but in the end they fell
just short to a resilient Japanese team.
Team of Destiny.
It didn't matter who won the 2011 Women's World Cup final, the winner already had a title.
Japan was the Team of Destiny that brought joy to their nation after a devastating tragedy. The US
overcame odds leading up to and then throughout the tournament to improbably reach the finals.
Abby WambachThe United States women's national soccer team gagged away the World Cup final
yesterday. They choked. They didn't have enough fitness or form to finish off Japan.
Japan was a worthy winner--and not because of an earthquake, tsunami or radiation disasters. They
wanted it more at the end.
So the Japanese girls are now official Women's World Cup Champions, which is
fantastic for a beaten-down nation that has had to deal with so much in recent times. With all due
respect to the USA Women's team, they have an amazing support system there for women's football and
deserve every type of recognition available but they've already won in so many different ways.
Time keeps on slipping...USWNT, you had this game won... twice. And you let it slip away thrice. It
wasn't totally your fault. Some bad bounces, we were killing it on their half for the first 20mins,
but just couldn't put it away.It was like watching the Yankees post 9/11. You wanted them to win,
just to get past everything, just like millions of fans were rooting for Japan to win in their

travel.Bob Ley calls the USA the favorites, and even a homer like Brandi Chastain has to point out
that the USA isn't playing that great.
Nice background on Pia, because she really is like that, in terms of working song lyrics into
actual stuff she says.

FIFA Women's World Cup Final: Two stories. One dream.
Story 1:
Japan. A thriving culture devastated by unstoppable power. A once strong body now undergoing the
most meticulous reconstruction.
Tonight, the Women World Cup 2011 held in Germany will host the Women's World Cup finals, with
Japan and the USA as worthy opponents. Japan, who surprisingly eliminated the German team in the
quarter finals and created a grave crisis for our national team, was the big surprise for the
German audience.

The road has been a long one, but with an absolutely fantastic Women's World Cup coming to a
close there has never been more at stake for the United States and Japan. But perhaps more
importantly, there has never been such potential for the growth (or revival or whatever you want to
call it) of women's football.
France again dominated possession, but it boiled down to not enough good finishing and sloppy
marking that earned them 4th place. Sweden went on the board first behind a nice outside flick from
Lotta Schelin. On the other side of the half, the French scored off sub Thomis. Then, seemingly, it
was all over for the Swedish as Oqvist gets hacked, not once but twice as she's going down, but
she

Billy Witz has a nice piece up about how the USA Women winning the World Cup tomorrow could be bad
for the team and the women's program in the long run. However, I don't agree with all of it. Yes, I
do think the USA is now relying more on athleticism instead of skill to squeeze out wins against
teams who have advanced their programs at a faster rate, but I guess I have more faith than Billy
in Pia Sundhage.
The Barclay's Premier League returns to action exactly one month from today. Exciting stuff for
football fans as the wait is almost over.. For Fantasy Premier League addicts, however, it's been a
difficult week. The official Fantasy Premier league game ... Continue reading →
So remember that whole "We had a keeper and 4 starting defenders who were struck by lightning, so
that's why we lost to the US"? Turns out, that after a random post game drug test, FIFA turned up
positive steriods use results on two players and then subjected the rest of the team to testing, as
they quickly left the country to return home.
Sunday's final vs Japan is going to be verrrryyyy interesting!! 2 completely different teams but
with the same die hard attitude! I'm torn over who I want to win, because I'm not totally sold on
the US team yet. Their style is...not so attractive, but their chemistry and attitude is
immense.
Lauren Cheney will need to control the tempo in midfield if the US are to defeat Japan.
It all comes down to Sunday. We've all heard it before (many, many times).

The US women are in the World Cup final for the first time since 1999. Many wondered if they
would have a letdown in their semifinal match against France following an emotional quarterfinal
win over Brazil.
Hi AC- I read your blog and enjoy your media criticisms and was wondering what you thought of their
Women's World Cup coverage?
I think it's better than the men for a few simple reasons
1. No Lalas
2. Diciccio- great analyst, just wish they'd allow him more than just a few sentences a game.
Abby Wambach is back in form. The United States Women's National Team is on their way to the World
Cup final for the first time since 1999. They achieved this feet in their 3-1 victory over a feisty
French national team. The game was a close one and like the USWNT's victory against Brazil, this
game had some impressive moments of excitement.

On this week's Philly Soccer Show podcast, KYW's Greg Orlandini and the PSP's Eli
Pearlman-Storch are joined by the Philadelphia Union's Brian Carroll.
In part one, Carroll talks about the Union's recent draw versus San Jose, looks
ahead to the New England match, and talks about team chemistry.
Should the U.S. go on to win their third Women's World Cup title against Japan this Sunday, the
turning point for the USWNT will most surely be the goal from Abby Wambach against Brazil that tied

So, the final two teams are left standing after what has been an enormously successful Women's
World Cup. The USA, pre-tournament favourites (along with Germany) and FIFA ranked No.1 in the
world will take on Japan, the surprise package of the
competition.
With a beautiful flick on, Laruen Cheney opened up the early scoring for the USWNT in the 9th
minute. Cheney wasn't done though, she later set up a corner which Abby Wambach put into the back
of the net with emphasis late in the second half to break open a tense draw that saw France
dominating possession and getting a lion's share of the good shots.
A strong header from forward Abby Wambach sealed the victory for the USWNT in their semifinal match
against France. For most of the first 60 minutes France controlled possession and former

By Ulysse Pasquier, writing from Paris
An entire country, in which "World Cup" was still synonymous with "controversy", is
rediscovering football through the Women's World Cup. Reaching the semi finals of the tournament
for the first time in their history, Les Bleues have enchanted France after beating England on
penalties.
If you read this blog regularly then you know I'm a big proponent of statistical analysis. You
also know that I think it's just one component of a bigger picture. Watching the USA-Brazil Women's
World Cup quarter final on Sunday wasn't about the numbers. I don't think many models would have
been able to predict how the game unfolded and what the outcome would be.
