Readers should know already that the WPS suspended the league for this upcoming season. (Some
reports on the decision: Sports Illustrated/Associated Press; All White Kit; The Guardian.)
To say that the league has struggled would be an understatement. It's been plagued by the usual
headaches of a nascent sports league - mismanagement, outsized ambition, financial troubles,
finicky owners, fickle fans, crap media.
Dan Borislaw hijacking the magic out of women's professional soccer
What a blow to women's soccer after that magnificent exposition by the US national team at the
CONCACAF Olympics qualifiers. The WPS has decided to cancel the 2012 season after running into a
retaliatory lawsuit bought by the former owner of the magicJack, Dan Borislow.

Goalkeeper David De Gea has not exactly lived up to expectations in his first season with
Manchester United, and there is pretty legitimate reasoning to explain what has gone wrong.
He might need be able to see clearly.
De Gea reportedly requires laser surgery to repair a case of farsightedness.
Imagine a bad breakup with someone you shouldn't have hooked up with in the first place, someone
who seemed perfect for you but who belittled you to your friends, was a slob, didn't pay their half
of the rent and utilities and criticized your sexual performance. Now imagine having to have that
person spend one weekend a month at your house for the next two years.
The Japan Women's adidas 2012/13 home kit was launched along with the new men's home uniform

What do we mean by "prehistoric"? We mean before FIFA adopted co-opted, some might say
women's soccer a couple of decades ago, with its history seemingly dated to the 1990s. Though there
has been some coverage of the pre-war era (especially the interesting focus put on Dick, Kerr
Ladies), the period between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall is
patchily covered, at least to our knowledge (feel free to leave links to any good books, essays,
papers etc in the comments).

Having faced uncertainty about its future in recent weeks and months, WPS appears to have
avoided doomsday. At least for now.
WPS reportedly received conditional Division 1 sanctioning for 2012 from U.S. Soccer's board of
directors on Monday evening despite it only having five teams and the minimum for Division I status
typically being eight.
Women's Professional Soccer (upper case) and women's professional soccer (lower case) are both
in trouble in the United States and scrambling for survival.
I have the perspective of being intimately involved in the creation and launch of WPS from 2007
through 2009 as founding President of WPS' Chicago Red Stars.

For all you Hope Solo fans. Here she is in DWTS with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She lost it a few
times with her routine but on the pitch she rarely loses it and that's where it counts. Great to
see her have some fun while she carries on with a full plate with the national team. Its a pretty
grueling schedule.
United States Women's National soccer team goalkeeper and 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup Golden Glove

Canada in Portland, OR.
Turkish football authorities have pioneered a remarkable anti-hooliganism tactic: allowing only
women and children to watch a game. Initially after violence marred a Fenerbahce match authorities
had decided to ban all fans from two games. Then someone instead suggested only allowing certain
fans.

About 20sec into this clip --which is quite possibly the greatest Women's soccer mixtape of all
time-- we see Hope Solo on a treadmill with a face-mask then a quick cut to a shot of a control
panel of some sort that measures God knows what. It's all very intense and basically proves that
Hope Solo is the Ivan Drago of Women's Soccer.
If you noticed like I did a pint sized player who took over midfield for the Philadelphia
Independence in Sunday's semi-final against the MagicJack and wondered idly, "She is something
special", don't go into the scouting business just yet.
Veronica Boquete is already out there and is the WPS player of the year because she is
special.
Cesc Fabregas is returning to Barcelona. Really.
The long-awaited transfer of Fabregas from Arsenal to Barcelona is on the verge of completion,
according to various reports in both England and Spain, although the signing is not official as of
yet.
Fabregas and Samir Nasri were left off the roster for Arsenal's Premier League opener this
weekend against Newcastle, lending more credence to the reports that both players are set to sign
elsewhere.
FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011 finalists Hope Solo and Abby Wambach and several other members

travel.Bob Ley calls the USA the favorites, and even a homer like Brandi Chastain has to point out
that the USA isn't playing that great.
Nice background on Pia, because she really is like that, in terms of working song lyrics into
actual stuff she says.
My recent post on Louisa Necib has been the most read popular I've ever written on this blog.
That's a great testament to the burst of interest this Women's World Cup has generated around the
world. (France's semi-final game, for instance, attracted 4 million viewers in a country that has
been very slow to adopt women's football).
Billy Witz has a nice piece up about how the USA Women winning the World Cup tomorrow could be bad
for the team and the women's program in the long run. However, I don't agree with all of it. Yes, I
do think the USA is now relying more on athleticism instead of skill to squeeze out wins against
teams who have advanced their programs at a faster rate, but I guess I have more faith than Billy
in Pia Sundhage.

A tremendous game today: the polar opposite of U.S.-Brazil, and indeed of France-England, but as
riveting in it's way. That was a relief, since I'm not sure I could have handled the kinds of
emotional ups and downs that this past weekend delivered. Tonight, instead of the drama of
confusing calls and the absurdity of penalty kicks, we had a clean, flowing game, one won through
determined and brilliant play-making by the U.
1) To me, the shots of Abby Wambach and Hope Solo hugging it out in triumph after the USA's
legendary and improbable win over Brazil yesterday are the most poignant. The two were at odds in
the last World Cup, with Wambach one of the harshest critics of Solo's outburst, ignoring the
honesty of her statements to lash out at the breaking of the team code.
Of all the things that impressed and elated me about the play of the U.S. team yesterday against
Brazil, one might come as a bit of a surprise. It was this: during the waning minutes of the game,
before Rapinoe's cross and Wambach's brilliant header, at least two players did their best to draw
penalty kick calls against Brazil.
Today's game between England and France was an incredibly grueling experience for the players,
clearly, but for viewers too. France played beautifully, but England's play was tenacious, heroic,
and in it's own way epic. I left the room twice during the last minutes of the game, and again
during PKs basically unable to watch.
