ESPN does an ACTUAL story about the New Mexico/BYU match

From a Left Wing 08 November @ 08:55 AM EST
Watch this interview with a local reporter (Jared Lloyd/Desert News) who covered this match. He points out that the "refs allowed" for a "physical game" - and offers a well informed perspective on the tone of the game (explaining New Mexico's use of a physical style of play to break up BYU's movement up and down the field). Video: A gladiator sport

Soccerblog 07 November @ 08:32 AM EST

Some WWF and some WTF moments in the BYU vs New Mexico match. These girls could whip Vinny Jones anytime. And Julie Foudy had to spin the indefensible. "Ponytail whiplash" like "tennis elbow " could become a recognizable sports injury.

New Mexico/BYU's Bitchslap

From a Left Wing 06 November @ 07:59 PM EST
ESPN ran a story about a recent match between BYU and New Mexico's women's teams which has become infamous for the elbows-to-the-ribs and ponytail-yank antics of New Mexico player Elizabeth Lambert. Fans of the sport are groaning, because this is what it takes to get a non-Olympics/World Cup/WPS Final into headlines - replays of bitchslap. Click to continue reading...

Tomorrow: European Championship match England v Germany

From a Left Wing 09 September @ 02:04 PM EST
Tomorrow England and Germany will compete for the European Championship. Germany rules the hen house and has for far too long - having won every European Championship since 1995.
The annoyingly titled Die Besten Frauen der Welt (subtitled in English) shows the level of their training, and that pretty much says it all. Click to continue reading...

The Real Players of New Jersey: Sky Blue FC wins WPS championship!

From a Left Wing 22 August @ 06:26 PM EST
Walking into Carson stadium for the WPS final, I found myself thinking that a win for Sky Blue would be good for the league, and perhaps even good for the Sol. The WPS needs to get rid of the impression that there is one team that is far and away better than the rest. The playoff structure, which guaranteed a place in the finals for the regular season champs, did that by clearing a path to the final for the Sol, as if they deserved a free pass. Jersey Girls pull off a shocker: Sky Blue FC defeat St. Louis Athletica, take on SOL in WPS Final on Saturday

From a Left Wing 19 August @ 08:38 PM EST
Sky Blue's presence in the final is a bit of a surprise as they just barely qualified for the playoffs. Of course, in a league of seven teams playing a fairly short season I'm not sure the standings mean all that much. They had a rocky season - they fired their coach at the start, and the next to take the job quit just a few weeks ago. Click to continue reading...

Honorable Losses
