English Premier League Recap 11 February 2012 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog

Below are brief recaps for all the EPL matches played on February 11, 2012.

Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool

The Red Devils go top of the EPL table with a brace from Wayne Rooney. Luis Suarez scored a late goal for Liverpool but it wasn't enough for a comeback.

It may not have been a man of the match-calibre performance, as those honours would have to have gone to one of the defenders—and probably either Glen Johnson or Martin Skrtel. And he likely didn't even have as good a game as his previous two against Wolverhampton and Manchester United. Regardless of that, however, after nearly a full calendar year filled almost entirely by futility as he struggled first with fitness and then with fitting in, it's understandable that on the back of three strong showings on the bounce people would be eager to look for any upside they can find in the 2012 edition of Andy Carroll.

Last night Fernando Torres appeared on Chelsea TV's "Friday Night Live" programme where he answered questions from the fans. Chelsea have kindly uploaded some of the interview to their official channel on YouTube which I will feature for you here.
Torres was asked about how we is settling in at Chelsea and his relation ship with the fans below:

'Since I joined Chelsea it has been amazing.

In our last poll, we asked whether the club needed to sign a striker, winger, attacking midfielder, or holding midfielder in the transfer window to shore up one of the areas of weakness that had become apparent over the course of the 2011-12 season. An overwhelming majority of nearly 70% said that what the club needed more than anything was a striker, while 17% said winger, 8% said attacking midfielder, and only 5% said holding midfielder.

It was another chance for a struggling club to inject some life into their season by facing a Liverpool side unable to find consistent results against opposition below them in the table. Transfer madness takes a back seat to mid-week matches, as a number of top teams in Europe take to the field on Tuesday.

The top four teams in England are all in action, with Landon Donovan, Tim Howard and Everton facing league-leading Manchester City. Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea will all be looking to secure their own results while hoping the American pair can conjure an upset to shorten the gap at the top of the table.

I'd love for Carroll to score in this one...Liverpool travel to my hometown of Wolverhampton on Tuesday night as they prepare to face Wolves in the Premier League. Liverpool are on a massive high after knocking both Manchester City and Manchester United out of the League and FA Cup, but can the Reds compose themselves in exactly the sort of fixture that has caused them to stumble in the league?

It was widely thought that after regaining his fitness following hip surgery American and Aston Villa fullback Eric Lichaj would head on loan to Leeds United, where he enjoyed overall success in his first stretch with consistent first-team minutes while on loan there last year.

Tim Howard, Landon Donovan, and Everton tied Aston Villa, while Brad Friedel and Tottenham Hotspur were held to a draw by Wolverhampton in weekend Premier League action.

Brad Friedel and Tottenham Hotspur welcome Wolverhampton to White Hart Lane, while Brad Guzan and Aston Villa take on the American duo at Everton of Landon Donovan and Tim Howard.

For the game between Wolverhampton and Chelsea we had ref Peter Walton.

Frank Lampard will grab the headlines. Fernando Torres deserves to share in the spotlight. The maligned striker capped an excellent shift with one more killer pass, this time to Ashley Cole who went on to set up Super Frank for a trademark finish with only minutes to play. I don't want to wager on just how big this result could prove to be, but I reckon pretty damn in the grand scheme.

Carling Cup returns to the menu as the victors of tonight's game will seal their path into the semi final of this competition. It won't be so easy to win this year's competitions, well, compared to our run last season. Whatever the hell you think is going on at Chelsea right now, whatever you think the club is mired in A Carlo-esque bad moment, crisis, et al. it doesn't matter. What we all can agree on is that anything less than a win this weekend at home to Wolves is going to see the shit hit the proverbial fan.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has conceded that his side must return to winning ways quickly as their title hopes are quickly vanishing with each unsuccessful outing.

The Blues have lost four of their last seven matches in all competitions and according to reports, Villas-Boas was forced to call an extended dressing room meeting to urge for unity in these difficult times.

For most, Charlie Adam had his best game in a Liverpool shirt against Chelsea, and so before moving on completely from Sunday's match it only seems right to at the very least acknowledge that. And considering this blog's fondness for statistics—not to mention the role stats play in the approach of Fenway Sports Group and Damien Comolli—an obvious point of interest seems clear: Is there anything obvious in Adam's numbers from the weekend that help to separate Sunday from most of what came before?
