German Bundesliga Match Predictions 10 February 2012 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog
In the modern game of football, 600,000 Euros is an extremely insignificant price to pay for a
player. It is a low risk, high reward situation for the club. If the player ends up as a failure
then the loss was very minimal. However if the player goes on to be a success, than it looks like a
genius move.
Rich made a comment in my previous post that got me thinking, "just how hard was our first
half?"
Well, unfortunately, soccer is a bit behind on the sabermetrics such as SOS and RPI and Power
Rankings or other crazy mathematic formulas/systems that determine, well, everything.
What we can figure out is our points haul from one half of the season to the other.

Liverpool's youngsters return to NextGen Series action today, with their quarterfinal matchup
with Tottenham's U19s taking place in London. The brief break in senior squad action allows for
attentions to turn to a competition that, on the whole, has been a terrific advertisement for youth
football on the continent.

'Twas a bit of a slow one yesterday as anyone who spent 11-and-a-bit hours 'glued' to the live
feed will tell you, with the total spending across the English leagues failing to surpass the £50
million that Chelsea spaffed on Fernando Torres this time last year let alone the ludicrous £225
million that was spent in total in January of 2011.
Liverpool and Queens Park Rangers have been alerted to the availability of former Arsenal
midfielder Alexander Hleb, with Barcelona ready to make the out-of-favour Belarusian a free agent,
after talks over cancelling his contract.
The move comes two weeks after Hleb returned to Barcelona following a failed loan spell with
Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg, who had asked to terminate his season-long agreement six months early,
after the 30-year-old struggled with form and fitness, making just four appearances this term.
Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb will be without a team at the end of the
year after his current club Wolfsburg revealed that they will not be renewing his contract when it
ends later on this month.
Hleb who struggled to assert himself in the Barcelona line up was eventually loaned out to
Bundesliga club Wolfsburg in August on a short term switch that was meant to improve his fitness
and form after an injury prone post Arsenal career.

Editor's note: At the end of the 2010 season, we posted a series of "Raves" about our
favorite Philadelphia players. They need not be the team's best players, but they're guys and gals
we like. Over the next two weeks, we continue the series again with some of the PSP writers' and
contributors' favorite players of 2011.
There are ways to make life easier for referees. This weekend was dominated by
a lot of talk about the difficult and ungrateful job a referee has to make. There has been a lot of
talk about pressure. None of that talk might actually help Babak Rafati, as it's mere speculation,
why he attempted suicide.

Spotted (you'd be hard-pressed to miss it) in the Sudtribune Stand at the Westfalenstadion last
weekend, Borussia Dortmund fans put on quite a show with a colossal 'skull' tifo display ahead of
their game against Wolfsburg here's the video, along with a brief 'Making Of' segment.
In
seconda piazza si rivede [.
Those were 150.000 Euros not well spent for Wolfsburg. Felix Magath loaned
Aliaksandr Hleb from Barcelona for a special €100k per game and €50k per goal fee. Thus,
Magath's total expenses for Saturday's trip to Dortmund added up to €150k, not counting the
damage Dortmund's fresh in form offense caused all afternoon.
Rodolfo Borrell has set his sights on a first Barclays Premier Reserve League North victory of the
season as his Liverpool youngsters prepare to host big-spending Chelsea on Wednesday afternoon.
The Reds' second-string have played just two domestic games so far this term due to their
involvement in the NextGen Series tournament.
Although the game ended 1-1 it was a very disputed match. After a quickfire goal by Wolfsburg in
the 65th second through Mandzukic, the wolves retreated and Hamburg pushed forward in a good
fashion and the goal could not be very far. Petric equalized in the 56 minute and Hamburg seemed
ready to push even harder and get the win, but that didn't happen as they seemed out of fuel.
Heiko Westermann - Hamburgs captain
Today I'm going to see a match from the Bundesliga between Hamburger SV and Wolfsburg.
Hamburg is the only team that always played in the Bundesliga from its foundation in 1963, thus
earning the nickname "The Dinosaurs". Unfortunately for them, they currently are in the last place.
NextGen Series update
Liverpool Reserves' NextGen Series hopes are in their own hands following a goalless draw
between Wolfsburg and Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday night.

Striker links with Spurs continue to dominate the transfer columns and the latest player to have
his name mentioned in connection with a move to the Lane is a Swiss centre forward who is currently

Eren Derdiyok is 23 years old and plays for Bayer Leverkusen, having joined from FC Basle in
2009.
I remember so very well where I was when Steve McClaren was stood stony-faced beneath an
umbrella in the pouring rain as England surrendered their opportunity to feature at Euro 2008. I
was in a pub in Holloway in North London, and the patrons of the establishment had come together
under a cloud of false hope.

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images(Bleacher Report) Uruguayan International and former Nacional center
back Sebastian Coates is ever so close to completing a £7 million move to Liverpool. His presence
in the Anfield stands on Saturday confirm that the deal looks a complete lock.
He has sighted conversations with his national team teammate, Luis Suarez, that the Reds
playmaker's opinion of the club made it nearly impossible to resist.
I don't often watch the Bundesliga, and I rarely watch Bayer Leverkusen. Yet Eren Derdiyok's
bicycle kick might be enough to turn me around, and make me into a Bundesliga fan.
Bayer Leverkusen were hosting Wolfsburg at home and drawing 1-1 after having taken the lead. In the
65th minute Derdiyok decided he wasn't interested in a draw, and so he performed a stunning bicycle
kick winner.

Probably the prettiest goal of the weekend took place in Bundesliga on Saturday when Eren
Derdiyok scored the game winner for Leverkusen over Wolfsburg with the beautiful bicycle kick
depicted in the video below. The 23 year old Swiss national's goal proved to be the game winner,
giving Leverkusen a 2-1 lead in the middle of the second half.

Eren Derdiyok scored a simply sublime goal this past weekend for Bayer Leverkusen against
Wolfsburg. It was the type of goal that you'll have to watch more than once to marvel at what the
Swiss striker of Kurdish descent actually did.
It's a simply spectacular goal and a great advertisement for the Bundesliga.

With only two matches left in NextGen Series group play, Liverpool find themselves vying for the
second qualifying spot with Molde and Wolfsburg in Group 2.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is adamant Carlos Tevez will never play for Manchester City
again after the striker apparently refused to play in last night's 2-0 Champions League defeat
against Bayern Munich.
Tevez was named as a substitute for the game at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday but appeared to not
want to come on when asked to in the second half, something the wantaway forward has denied.
In our latest column from the club's Academy, Frank McParland offers his thoughts on the NextGen

It's been a frustrating couple of weeks for us with regards to the NextGen Series double header
against Wolfsburg.
I felt we played poorly in the first game at Anfield and were somewhat fortunate to get a point
thanks to a late own goal.
Liverpool's hopes of qualifying for the NextGen Series knockout stage have suffered a blow
following a 2-0 defeat in Wolfsburg on Wednesday night.
Two goals inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half did the damage as the Germans picked up
the victory that saw them join the Reds on four points and move into joint-second place in Group 2.
Paul Kennedy of Soccer America reports that US national team right back is apparently leaning
towards playing for Germany.
It was a bad news day on the national team front out of Germany. Former U.S. national team
defender Tony Sanneh tweeted that German national team coach Joachim Loew was going to FC Nuremberg

What are the odds United don't concede once on their group stage travels? Derek
McGovern's Bets of the Day
Manchester United have played nine away matches in the Champions League group stages over the
last three years and conceded just two goals. That gives you an idea of how Fergie sets up his team
in early away matches, and how p**s-easy United's groups have been.
Arsenal visit Dortmund, the self-professed football capital of the world, to open a Champions
League group phase that promises to be the toughest one in recent years. BVB are by far the best
team from the fourth pot and could quite possible provide a sterner challenge than the other two
teams in the group.

Belarus international Hleb rose to prominence during an impressive three-year spell during which
he made 129 appearances and netted on 10 occasions in all competitions.
