Changing coaches often means changing playing styles, and the decision to hire Oscar Pareja as
head coach means the Colorado Rapids of 2012 may look quite different from the teams of
2010-11.
Giving Pareja the reins of his first MLS team is going to create a roster shakeup. The
Colombian, a veteran of MLS campaigns from 1998 through 2005, has already talked about the need to
find a Carlos Valderrama-type playmaker for the Rapids.
There are eighteen teams that spent the whole of 2011 in League Two (four teams are promoted
each season, and two are relegated). Congratulations to Shrewsbury Town, who despite missing out
in the League Two playoffs last May ended the year as the League Two side that had gained the most
points (an impressive 86) during 2011.
Tuesday's 3-2 win in ridiculously foggy Slovenia was big for the U.S. program. In fact, let's
file this one under "Huge."
It must be qualified with this reality: Slovenia doesn't look anything like the close-knit,
highly organized side that swept shockingly into World Cup 2010, riding role players and a heavy
dose of esprit de corps.

Now that deadline day's out the way, it's time to take a look at who's feeling smugly
self-satisfied about the whole affair and who spent the small hours of last night crying into their
pillow at the injustice of it all. Here, in no particular order, are the four biggest winners and
losers to emerge from yesterday's dealings.
Premier League transfer window winners and losers
A manager's worst nightmare or an essential bi-annual drama, the transfer window never fails to
go away quietly and this summer was no exception.

UPDATE: Beaten to the punch by the industrious Never Captain Nicky Butt. Here is his Transfer
Window Winners and Losers. ### Sorry for the light posting. It's an international break, after
all. Additionally there was just too much transfer news -- in the end, not really, but it wasn't
worth posting until everything was said and done.
Football Spy video: Transfer Deadline Day roundup
The summer transfer window slammed shut at 11pm on Wednesday night. Some last minute deals were
done, others failed at the final hurdle. Did your club sign that key player before the window
ended? Who were the winners and losers and who ended up where?
So last night's game was interesting. The first half showed a largely unorganized, disconnected
American side that was being beat everywhere on the field by the Mexican Gold Cup champions. The
second half saw a revitalized American side that was more dominating. It was literally a game of
two halves.
It's a USMNT spectacular this week as Amanda and Kirsten review the firing of Bob Bradley and
the appointment of Jurgen Klinsmann. They discuss the winners and losers with the coaching change
and pour one out for Jonathan Bornstein's national team career, after getting excited for the
possibilities for Stuart Holden and Baby Robot.
Despite the lack of winners and losers in the opening round of matches in the CAF Champions
League group stages this weekend there was still plenty to shout about. The CAF Confederation Cup,
Africa's second-tier competition, almost followed suit with two of this weekend's four matches
ending in a stalemate.

Emotional day today for USWNT, Amy LePeilbet, and myself. In sport there are always winners
and losers. Today, Sweden the winners and USA the losers. In life there is always death. Today
marks a death in the history of US Women's soccer.
It's been a long hard season in the top domestic leagues across Europe and Stoppage Time
International Football Blog looks across the continent to review another exciting year for
European league football. In the first of three parts we look at the winners and losers from
Albania to France.
The call-ups are done, and the rosters are known. Every team participating in this year's Gold
Cup has unveiled their rosters, and as expected the U.S. and Mexico look the strongest but other
teams look to have the talent to challenge the top two. After a day reading some quality analysis
and thinking about the selections, there can be some definitive statements made about who are the
big winners and losers in this round of international call-ups.

The whirlwind Premier League transfer deadline day has ended. There are still some deals being
sewn up, but the big news is that the deal for Fernando Torres going from Liverpool to Chelsea has
been finalized. The £50 million deal makes the Torres transfer the most expensive signing ever by
a British club.

Okay, now I can see why Sir Alex complains about our dressing room. I don't agree with
the whining, but my alma mater, the tiny Division 3 Goucher College, had a larger locker-room. My
girlfriend said her high school's smallest locker-room was still bigger.

With the 2011 MLS Draft and Supplemental Draft now in the rearview mirror, it's time to take a
closer look at the teams who did the best job of stockpiling talent.
No, we won't know for sure who the true winners and losers were for a few years, but we can
certainly speculate about which teams we thought did well.
The MLS drafts are finally over. After over a month of players being picked, picks being
declined, picks being traded, and picks being digested, there will be no more MLS drafts until the
Montreal Expansion Draft at the end of this year. To recap, we've seen:
- The Vancouver and Portland Expansion draft, where teams had 10 protected players but had to
submit a list of unprotected players to the two expansion clubs.
The 2011 MLS Draft has come and gone and as great a day as it was for many teams, the whirlwind
of transactions might have been a bit overwhelming for folks to keep up with.

The 2011 MLS Draft is set to begin Thursday at Noon and while we have a good idea who the first
two players picked will be, it isn't a stretch to call this year's draft one of the toughest to
predict in recent memory.
I will be posting a Final 50-player MLS Draft Big Board, as well as a full three-round MLS Mock
Draft later on tonight (They would have been sooner if I hadn't fallen ill on Tuesday).
It's all over for another year and in case you're wondering we're 107 days away from the next
bank holiday and long weekend. Kill me now!! What a festive period we've had though, with three
wins out of three, two clean sheets, 5 goals scored and two red cards. I haven't updated much
because quite frankly I haven't had the time or inclination to do anything between watching Spurs,
other football, darts, pulling all nighters to watch the Ashes and eating more food than a really
hungry fat man.
