Paolo Di Canio says he is tempted to slap Sunderland youngster Connor Wickham to ensure he fulfils his potential. The Black Cats boss is keen to see the 20-year-old live up to the expectations that came when he arrived on Wearside from Ipswich for £8.1 million two years ago. He said: "Maybe, with this guy, [.
Blackpool youngster Tom Ince was the star of the show as England under 21s beat Sweden 4-0 in a friendly at the Banks's Stadium in Walsall. The Liverpool transfer target slid in to score the opening goal. Jonjo Shelvey added a second to make up for an earlier miss (we're going to give that its [...]
Sunderland youngster Connor Wickham bagged his first England under 21 goal in last night's 1-0 win over Norway. The ex-Ipswich striker pounced on indecision in the Norwegian defence to score the only goal of the game. The victory ensured England topped their European Under 21 Championships qualifying group and will be seeded in today's play-off [.

I still want to see more of the 4-2-1-3/4-3-3 style formation used against Brighton in the FA Cup,
although that's looking more and more like a one-off.

After the wild final day of the January window and a finish to the season that was reason enough
for optimism, all eyes turned toward the summer. Even with the relatively disappointing end to the
campaign, Liverpool looked to have the opportunity to strengthen a squad that seemed just a few
pieces away from truly challenging the league leaders on a consistent basis.
Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland, White Hart Lane, Sunday 18th December, 3pm Kick
off
So on Thursday night Spurs European adventure for this season came to an end, despite a 4-0 win
at Shamrock. The perceived wisdom is that this is a blessing in disguise and can leave Harry
Redknapp and his team to concentrate on getting Spurs back into the Champions League.
Sunderland may not be in trophy-winning form this season, but their victory in the
always-eventful 'sack race' may prove to be a blessing in disguise.
After looking tame and lacking confidence for much of this campaign under Steve Bruce, with a
paltry 11 points from 14 matches their return, new club chairman Ellis Short felt the club needed
to go in a new direction.
Steve Bruce will have more free time now to feed the pigeons
To be fair to Sunderland, the club had given Steve Bruce a decent amount of money to strengthen
his squad over the years. Â But despite that financial backing, the former Manchester United
defender's best showing with the Black Cats was a tenth-place finish last season.
Manchester United 1-0 Sunderland Premier League 5th November 2011
United's 1-0 victory against Sunderland won't go down as one of their better performances during
Fergie's 25-year reign, as the home side failed to match the occasion with a big performance.
Sunderland 2-2 Aston Villa Premier League 29th October 2011
Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish was left frustrated after watching his side twice throw away a
lead, with Sunderland's Stephane Sessegnon ultimately nodding home a late equaliser to give
Sunderland a share of the points.
Connor Wickham equalises just before half-time for Sunderland against Aston Villa with a
brilliant finish but it's no comparison to the goal which Petrov got for Villa but a goal is a
goal.

At last the chance to write about something other than rumour, tittle tattle and economics. And
what a game we have today, none of that nerve wrenching, gut mangling, behind the sofa stuff of our
last match against the lowlife bottom feeders today we welcome those fine upstanding men from the
frozen wasteland of Sunderland, who will be looking to gift us 3 points in their push for
relegation.
After spending the summer making a decuplet of signings that all rate somewhere fairly high on
the 'impressive' spectrum (Wes Brown, John O'Shea, Connor Wickham, Seb Larsson, Craig Gardner,
etc), Sunderland are about to add an eleventh and, perhaps, this one is the most impressive of them
all.

Despite the threat of matches being cancelled amongst the hostility in major english cities,
right now all games are said to be going ahead this weekend. With that in mind, we should turn our
attentions to the new Premier League season which is just three days away.
Liverpool and Sunderland square up on Saturday, and both have new look squads as they head in to
the new season.
England under-21s picked up a comfortable 4-0 win over nine-man Austria under-21s at Brighton's Amex Stadium last night. Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey opened the scoring with a low free-kick from the edge of the box. A penalty from Josh McEachran and goals from Marvin Sordell and Connor Wickham completed the scoring.
Liverpool owner John W Henry is baffled by criticism of the club's summer spending spree and
believes critics have been hypocritical.
Since taking over the club in October 2010, Henry has sanctioned big-money signings such as Andy
Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing for a combined figure in the region of £71million.
Liverpool's Andy Carroll better watch out for 'England star in the making' Connor

The former Ipswich man believes that Sunderland's latest acquisition could usurp the £35
million Anfield striker in years to come, making a spot for the national side his own

Sorry for no LiveBlog today as I'm still working out the details there, so please use this match
thread as we embark on the new season ahead. I've done all of my pre-match rituals, and I've hope
you've done yours. With that ridiculous transfer saga behind us, I'm really excited for this match
and new season to start.
Last season's 'prediction' wasn't a complete failure – at least in the top seven. I had Chelsea
pipping United to the title (which looked possible until the Blues bought that misfiring traitorous
foreigner), City and Arsenal in third and fourth, and Liverpool ahead of Tottenham – insane in
retrospect, but still would have happened had Liverpool won its final two matches.
The minimum aim this season has to be to qualify for the Champions League again, but if we're
not careful, we will fail for the same reasons that we have in the previous two campaigns.
For what seems like forever, we have been crying out for a striker who can play on his own up
front and score goals.
Liverpool is reportedly ready to discuss Chelsea's bid for Raul Meireles – but they want Daniel
Sturridge included in any deal.
The Reds have recently rejected the west Londoners offer of £8m plus Yossi Benayoun for the
Portuguese midfielder, but will be tempted to negotiate if Sturridge was thrown into the equation.
Featured player Nicklas Bendtner played the 90 minutes as Sunderland put on a brave performance at
Old Trafford this afternoon against Manchester United. Sunderland set out in a 4-4-2
counter-attacking system against Man-U with N.B-52 and Connor Wickham upfront but the later was
stretchered off early on due to a injury replaced by Ji Dong Won.
Liverpool will be desperate for a winning start against Sunderland after Kenny Dalglish's first
pre-season since returning to the Reds dug-out.
There is renewed optimism at Anfield with the Reds legend having spent big this summer in a bid to
continue their strong finish to last season and re-establish themselves as genuine Premier League
title contenders.
For the second year in a row, Liverpool start the Premier League season at home, looking to get
the first full season of Kenny Dalglish's renewed reign off on the right foot. We say it every
year, regardless of the action during the summer this is what we've all been waiting for. The
transfer deadline keeps a bit of nonsense around until the end of August, but we're ever closer to
having a singular focus on the Premier League season, and that's about as good as it gets.
Four words you hate to wake up to in the morning: Narwich 2, Sunderland 1.
Listening to the last 15 minutes of the game last night my heart was in my mouth. Though it was a
shame not to hear Connor Wickham net a last minute equaliser against the Budgies - I found it
really exciting.
Two weeks is a very long time in football. Being a die-hard Ipswich Town fan, I got the train to
Bristol on the first day of the season. After a summer with no football, the expectation and
excitement of the new campaign kicking off was at an all time high. A Michael Chopra brace and
