Four players from national champion FC Milwaukee earned spots on the girls Under-18 Best XI for
their performances at the recent U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Phoenix.
Forwards Cara Walls (Wauwatosa East) and Mady Vicker
(Whitefish Bay), defender Valerie Gonyo (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) and
goalkeeper Monica Gonyo (Waukesha Catholic Memorial) all were chosen for the honor
team after helping the Nationals become the first Wisconsin team to win a USYS national title.
For the first time in the event's history, a Wisconsin team has won a U.S. Youth Soccer national
championship.
Cara Walls (Wauwatosa East) scored twice in two minutes in extra time and
Mady Vicker (Whitefish Bay) added another insurance goal as FC Milwaukee powered
past Colorado Rush Nike 4-2 in the girls Under-18 final to win the Frank Kelly Cup on Sunday
morning at the Reach 11 Complex in Phoenix.
Needing a win or draw in its pool play finale to earn a spot in the national championship game,
the FC Milwaukee Under-18 girls team left no doubt.
Cara Walls (Wauwatosa East) scored in the 13th minute and Justine
Hovden (Lake Geneva Badger) and Mady Vicker (Whitefish Bay) added goals
in a 10-minute span in the second half as the Nationals cruised past FC Stars of Massachusetts 3-0
Friday morning at the Reach 11 Complex in Phoenix.
Mequon Homestead regained the top spot in the final Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association
Division 1 state poll of the season.
The Highlanders (17-1-2), who were No. 1 for two weeks earlier in the year, have outscored
opponents 33-2 in an eight-game unbeaten streak since their lone loss – a 2-1 setback against
Whitefish Bay on May 10.

retired last year, will serve as an analyst for ESPN's television coverage of this summer's Women's
World Cup.

Women's Professional Soccer.
