Werder had the luck to find Diego's heir in their own home, young international Mesut Ozil. If you have ever seen him play, you must agree that this Turkish-born player took the best from both schools, fantastic in the midfield, he is also disciplined and devoted.

Ozil was crucial in winning the title on U21 European championship this summer.

Werder took a point from Alianz Arena (1:1) and if we are to judge from the play, the visitors deserved to take three points. 69 000 people at the sold-out stadium in Munich saw German international, Turkish-born Mehmet Ozil open the score minutes before the break. A couple of more days and the new Bundesliga season will be in full swing. I waited too long this summer, already got used to last year's shorter summer period after the Euro 2008. Worst, there was only very little exciting transfer activity in the Bundesliga.

Bayern decided for some reason to pay 30M Euro for Mario Gomez, Werder bought Marin from Gladbach and the Bundesliga lost in Diego one of its biggest stars.

The season in Bundesliga ended in Werder winning the domestic cup and Nurnberg's promotion to the elite. Last weekend Werder recorded a minimum win over Leverkusen in Berlin thus reaching their sixth trophy in the cup and most importantly managed to book a ticket for Europa League next season. Nurnberg's convincing 5:0 win over Cottbus reserved them a place in Bundesliga and their main aim next season will be to stay there.

The two northern clubs Hamburg and Bremen had to play in the Bundesliga one more time before they'll face each other on Thursday for the second leg of the UEFA-Cup semi-final.

Hamburg had to take on Berlin which is a direct competitor for the Bundesliga championship. But with a 1-1 draw the chances have shrunk for both teams although the upcoming opponents could be easier to play against than those for Wolfsburg, Bayern and Stuttgart.
