With the SuperDraft behind us, thoughts now turn to the nitty-gritty of the 2012 Union season.
Naturally, questions arise. Over a two-part series we pose ten questions to our Union beat
reporter, Eli Pearlman-Storch, beginning in part 1 with a focus on formation, roster depth and
leadership roles within the starting XI.
On Monday we held a the last live Q&A on the Brotherly Game for the 2011 year. Some of the
formatting got screwed up by the conversion to SBN. Here's the transcript:
Hello everyone! Welcome to the Brotherly Game's last live Q&A of the 2011 year. Ask your
questions as we head even closer to the 2012 MLS season.
While we don't know the full 2012 schedule for the Portland Timbers, we do know when JELD-WEN Field
will host its first match of the 2012 regular season. The Timbers will face an unnamed opponent as
part of the Week 1 schedule on Monday, March 12. It's expected this is due to the new TV package
between MLS and NBC Sports Channel to allow the game to be broadcast nationally, but full details
will be released soon.
On Tuesday, Major League Soccer released the dates for the 2012 home openers. The opponents have
yet to be named, with the full schedule expected to be released in January. Houston doesn't debut
their new stadium until week 10, and Montreal has yet to settle on a date for the opening of the
reconstructed Saputo Stadium.
Week 8 started off with Pacos Ferreira getting the best of Academica 2-0. Olhanense defeated
Guimaraes 1-0 while Benfica earned the only road win of the week 1-0 over Beira Mar and moved into
top spot in the Portuguese League. Sunday saw the home team dominance of this Week take off as
Maritimo defeated Setubal 1-0 to move into third place in the league.

Entering the final week of the MLS season, much is already sorted out, and that is reflected in
the latest SBI MLS Power Rankings.
With nine teams already set for the playoffs, five teams eliminated from contention, and the
other four jockeying for that final berth there wasn't much moving and shaking after the last round
of results.
Antonio Gates has to be worrying fantasy football owners. After eight catches in Week 1, he was
held without a catch in Week 2 and then missed Week 3 with a foot injury. Going forward it's
unknown when Antonio Gates will be able to play again.
What is known is that Gates won't play this weekend.
Heading into Week 4 of the 2011 NFL season, we are starting to get a good idea of which teams
are the cream of the crop. In these NFL power rankings, we take a look a the top ten teams in the
league. There are a few surprises mixed in with a number of other teams that we knew were going to
be great.
Alright, that headline is a bit premature. But I can't help being excited about the rookie
quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. To put it bluntly, rookie quarterbacks usually suck. Cam
Newton hasn't sucked. In fact, he's been pretty darn awesome.
Even though the Panthers are 0-2, it hasn't been Cam Newton's fault.
Tony Romo broke a couple of ribs in Week 2. No worries the starting quarterback for the Dallas
Cowboys was able to return to the game and lead his team from a come from behind victory. For
fantasy football owners, Romo's return was a relief.
Despite missing action during the game, Romo finished with 345 passing yards to go along with
two touchdowns.
Does anyone want to win the Eastern Conference?
The constant shifting in the East has as many as five teams in position to lay claim to the
conference's top seed. Sporting Kansas City looks like the best bet of the bunch after a convincing
win over the Houston Dynamo put the club level on points atop the conference table with Columbus
and has the team up to No.
I love the NFL and I'm happy that its back and that my beloved Bengals are amazingly 1-0, but the
real show is tomorrow on Fox Soccer Channel, where the stakes top Week 1 in the NFL!
CONCACAF Champions League Showdown: USA V. Mexico
8PM EST - The Galaxy travel to Morelia to try to keep MLS perfect record in Mexico entact (I have
to use it while we got it!
Dallas Cowboys fans hold their breath whenever Dez Bryant is returning a punt. Not only because
he has a chance to return any punt for a touchdown but also because there's more of a chance that
he could get injured. In Week 1 of the 2011 NFL season, the downside already came into light when
Bryant suffered a bruised quad.
In Week 1 of the 2011 fantasy football season, there were a lot of surprising players leading
the way for the fantasy football world. If you had one of these players in you fantasy starting
lineup, pat yourself on the back. Job well done!
Here's our list of the most surprising fantasy football players in Week 1:
QB Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

After an impressive victory over another championship contender, it's no wonder that Louisville
maintained its perch atop the Fox Soccer/SBI NCAA Top 25 rankings.
The Cardinals topped UCLA in an early-season battle of national powers to justify their
preseason No.
Arian Foster likes to have fun on Twitter. That was on full display on Wednesday when the
fantasy football star running back for the Houston Texans posted a hamstring MRI picture on
Twitter. Check out the Arian Foster hamstring MRI photo below to see proof of his wackiness!
After seeing the MRI of Arian Foster's hamstring, fantasy football owners (oh, and fans of the
Texans) are panicking.
Chris Johnson is upset. Chris Johnson fantasy owners might be even more upset. The Tennessee
Titans star running back is holding out for a new contract, and with the 2011 NFL season quickly
approaching, it's looking less and less likely that he'll play in Week 1. That, understandably, has
tension at high levels.
Cedric Benson has decided to go to jail. He was recently sentenced to 20 days as a result of
pleading no contest last month in an incident with an ex-roommate. Following that incident, he was
charged with assault with bodily injuries. Pictures that surfaced online showed Benson's
ex-roommate with injuries to his face.
For fantasy football owners around the globe, Monday was a good day. Peyton Manning, arguably
the best fantasy quarterback of the last decade, was activated by the Indianapolis Colts. Manning
was cleared to practice on a limited basis.
That said, Manning still doesn't know when he will actually play in a game.
The fixtures for the 2011/2012 season in Turkish Spor Toto Super League have been announced in
Istanbul on Thursday.
First Istanbul derby of the year will be played between Besiktas and Fenerbahce in Week-8. Besiktas
will host another Istanbul side Galatasaray in a Week -11 game.
There is little question about which team is No. 1 in the SBI MLS Power Rankings, but the
Seattle Sounders took matters into their own hands to determine who should be No. 2.
After a victory in Texas over FC Dallas, Seattle grabbed a stranglehold of the spot behind the
Los Angeles Galaxy in the latest rankings.

Your Assistant Manager: Week 2 - Player Picks: The dust has settled on Week 1, we've accepted that
most of us did pretty poorly, but it's a new week and it's time for blog readers around the globe
to put their disappointment behind them and start the march back towards the Top 50/Top 500/Top
1000

Bye weeks don't get much better than the one the Los Angeles Galaxy just had.
Despite not playing a minute, the Galaxy watched its three chief competitors fail to secure wins
while adding Robbie Keane to the fold. Seattle and Dallas each played to draws, and Real Salt Lake
fell to Toronto, allowing the Galaxy to fortify their stronghold on the top spot in both the race
for the Supporters' Shield and the SBI MLS Power Rankings.
We are adding a new feature to our site for the upcoming 2011/12 season and recapping the
Portuguese League after their rounds of games are done for the week. We hope you enjoy this added
feature. Week 1 opened with more of a whimper then a roar as three out of the eight games played
ended in a scoreless draw while only three clubs where able to manage a victory opening weekend.
With one match left to go tomorrow (Monday), the first thing we learned is that when your fantasy
pundit spends the summer harping on the fact that you should spend your time, effort, and budget
picking home players that we won't see a home win in week 1. I stick by my initial hypothesis
that you should strongly favor players playing at home but this was certainly not great positive

additional insight over and above The Week Ahead. Our Never Manage Alone partner the Yahoo!
Assistant Manager has posted his weekly Player Picks column. Enjoy!
Simon Bird's Premier League previews and predictions (Week 1)
Arsenal are at top of the league, Wolverhampton sit at the bottom. Ok, only in alphabetical
order on zero points. Avoiding all reference to battles commencing, points being stolen and smash
and grab raids by away teams, what does the opening weekend of the season hold?

The Los Angeles Galaxy followed an unexpected slip-up with perhaps their most important victory
of the season, and as a result, they maintain the top spot in the SBI MLS Power Rankings.

I was actually surprised about tonight's attendance being announced as less than a sellout, it
looked closer to a sellout than Wednesday night's game against Real Salt Lake. Instead, the
announced attendance as about 1,000 below capacity at 17,493. After the last home game, KC's
attendance was well enough off that it could have been 0 the rest of the season and it would top
the 1999 season.

Last night KC had their 7th home game of the season, so it's time to take a look again and compare
how the attendance throughout the years looks. Last night the announced attendance was 17,418,
about 1,000 below the capacity of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. To see last week's, as well as get

KC's 6th home game of the season is in the books, time to take another look at how the 2011 season
stacks up with the rest throughout the team history. For the 5th home game (and to get links to
previous weeks), click here. While the result last night was great, I was a little disappointed
that the game was not a sell out.

With all of the draws and teams on friendly duty and an unexpected postponement, there wasn't a
whole lot of moving and shaking in the SBI MLS Power Rankings this week.
The top four teams in the West continue to be the top four teams in the league, with Los
Angeles, Seattle, Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas continung to look like the class of MLS this
season.
Another exciting week of football in Singapore and I've missed it all so here is the table and top
scorers. Hopefully normal service will resume next week.

It's no secret that West is the more dominant of Major League Soccer's two conferences. It's
even more evident considering that the top four teams in the SBI MLS Power Rankings all hail from
the Western Conference.
Los Angeles, FC Dallas, Seattle and Real Salt Lake occupy the top four spots in the latest
rankings, respectively, after all added points to their totals this past week.
There's a revolution at the bottom of the SBI MLS Power Rankings, in more ways than one.
The New England Revolution's fourth consecutive loss pits the club at No. 17, the lowest it's
been all season. Other clubs near the bottom, namely Sporting Kansas City and Chicago, are on the
way up after each secured four points this past week to make up some ground on the league
leaders.
Just like last season, FC Dallas has embarked on an extended unbeaten run to shoot up the league
standings.
The defending Western Conference champions haven't lost in nine games and find themselves second
in both the Supporters' Shield standings and SBI MLS Power Rankings after another clean sheet
victory and a sweet goal from Marvin Chavez.

A high-profile clash of two league leaders highlights this weekend's action in the NASL.
The high-flying Carolina Railhawks will look to avenge their Week 1 loss to the Puerto Rico
Islanders, who returned to NASL play with a 2-0 loss to Minnesota in midweek.
So I'm switching it up a little because, frankly, there's just no point in focusing on Arsenal or
City this week.
1. Manchester United, 73 pts - Well, United's worst-case scenario came true. Their loss at
Arsenal and Chelsea's "win" against Spurs leaves the Red Devils just three points ahead of the
Blues going into this weekend's clash.
