A comprehensive, 90-minute performance was just what the doctor ordered for the ailing
Revolution, and that's just what went down on Wednesday night against the Columbus Crew. For the
first time in a long time (if at all) this season, Jay Heaps' squad not only limited the petty
mistakes that have cost them so many points this year, but they also pressed high, played physical,
and controlled the tempo.
Doesn't it just feel good to get a win again? The Columbus Crew were probably the hottest team
in MLS going into Wednesday night's clash in Foxboro; but they were exhausted and far from home,
and the New England Revolution took advantage. It was a trap game for the Crew and a much-needed
vote of confidence for the Revs.
The international break means that most MLS teams are out of action this week, but there are
still a pair of games Wednesday night, including one that will have the attention of all of the
teams in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
The Columbus Crew, winners of four straight games and unbeaten in their last six, can end the
night as high as third place in the East and be within a point of second-place New York.
The Philadelphia Union fell to the Columbus Crew Wednesday night 2-1. The loss effectively marks
the end of the Union's playoff hopes for this season even though they may still be mathematically
alive. It is unlikely this situation will turn around given the personnel available. I will spare
you the gruesome details; suffice to say that the Union managed to lose a "six point" game at home
against another mediocre Eastern conference team fighting for a playoff spot while being up a
man.
CHESTER, Pa. -- Despite being down to ten men, and getting dominated in possession for large
parts of the second half, Eddie Gaven gave the Columbus Crew just what they needed to make up
ground in the ever-tightening Eastern Conference playoff race.
With Sporting Kansas City sporting a top lineup, the Eastern Conference leading squad proved why
they sit at the top of the standings, defeating Toronto FC, 1-0, at BMO Field on Saturday.
Despite not taking the lead until the final ten minutes of the match, there was no question who
the better squad was on the day.
The Columbus Crew made an emotional return to action on Wednesday night, playing their first
match since the death of midfielder Kirk Urso. As difficult as it was to get back on the field
after such a tragedy, the Crew battled on and honored their fallen teammate with a gutsy
performance.
I need to start paying more attention to the ticket prices with our TiqIq affiliate. Look, I
know the Revs have been poor lately, but for $8, come to the game, tailgate with the Rebels and
Riders, get rowdy, make a fool of yourself, and then go out in Patriot Place afterward.
Shalrie Joseph made himself feel quite at home at Gillette Stadium Wednesday night.
In his return to the place he called home since 2003 until a trade sent him across the country
to Chivas USA, Joseph scored two goals to spark a three-goal comeback and help the Goats salvage a
3-3 draw against the Revolution to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Down 3-0 just 21 minutes into the match, Shalrie Joseph's first return
trip to New England with Chivas USA on Wednesday night looked headed for disappointment.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass – The New England Revolution built a three-goal lead within the first 21
minutes of the game, only to see it evaporate in the next 25 minutes, tying Chivas USA, 3-3 in
front of 10,945 at Gillette Stadium Wednesday night.
While most of us were watching the US beat Mexico last night, Jerry Bengtson was busy continuing
to play far better for his national team than he's ever indicated he will for the New England
Revolution. Honduras beat Boca Juniors 2-0 in a friendly in Miami on Wednesday night. Bengtson
scored the opener in the 23rd minute with a diving header.
The Puerto Rico Islanders traveled over 3,300 miles to play the Los Angeles Galaxy in CONCACAF
Champions League group play on Wednesday night. With LA playing mainly bench and reserve side
players, the Islanders may have felt they had a good chance to inflict some damage on the MLS side
much like they did on [.
The Houston Dynamo may have failed to win their last two MLS games, but that pair of poor results
did not stop them from grabbing a convincing victory in their CONCACAF Champions League opener.
The Dynamo got their campaign in the regional competition started with a 3-1 win over Salvadoran
club C.
D.C. United captain Dwayne De Rosario cemented his place in exclusive MLS company Wednesday
night, becoming just the seventh player in league history to tally 100 career goals, joining Jeff
Cunningham, Jaime Moreno, Landon Donovan, Ante Razov, Jason Kreis and Taylor Twellman. D.C. United
compiled a highlight reel of all of his goals, capped off by his header against the New York Red
Bulls Wednesday that brought him to the milestone.
Throughout the season DC United has pursued a team identity with limited success. Through some
extraordinary individual efforts and occasional combination play by a few players at a time, United
won a good share of points, but never quite seemed as solid as they could be. A certain confidence
was lacking.
It seems like just yesterday that the Fire dispatched the Revolution for 3 points. With a
midweek game against DC United at RFK Stadium, the turnaround is a quick one for the Men in Red. I
exchanged questions with Martin Shatzer over at Black and Red United to get some insight ahead of
tonight's matchup.
Everton spanked Leyton Orient 5-0 in the CapitalOneRumbelowsMilkCupRolaColaFootballCupLeagueCup
on Wednesday night, with new signing Kevin Mirallas scoring twice on his full Toffees debut after
joining from Olympiakos just ten days ago though the goal of the night definitely came before
kick-off.
Another pivotal performance from Belgian wing-wizard Eden Hazard helped Chelsea on their way to
a second win of the season at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. However, Premier League new-boys
Reading made a proper game of it, and came close to pulling off a major shock.
In which, during what Google Translate reliably informs us was a 'trivial test match' between
Israel and Hungary on Wednesday night, Israeli 'keeper Dudu Aouate goes up and over the top of
Hungary striker Adam Szalai, only to crash back down to terra firma face first and in sickening
fashion.
Veteran Sao Paulo 'keeper Rodrigo Ceni has made a bit of a name for himself over the years by
chiming in with over 100 goals for his club, sticking away free-kicks and
penalties like it ain't no thang for the best part of 23 years now.
However, Ceni managed to stick one away at the wrong end with terrific panache against Nautico
in the Campeanato on Wednesday night coming to punch a corner clear, only to see the ballÂ
ricochet off his triangular knuckles at an almost physics-defying angle and then loop up and down
over the heads of three hapless Sao Paulo defenders left agog on the goal-line.

For the neutrals it must have been a good game, for us it was another "typical" Chelsea display in
a game that on paper, Chelsea should have won easily.
Now I mean no disrespect to Reading and their fans at all when I say that, but let's put things
into perspective here. A newly promoted side come to Stamford Bridge on a Wednesday night, on
Chelsea's first appearance at the Bridge since winning the Champions League and with plenty of
attacking talent on the pitch, surely it's a home banker isn't it?
Arsene Wenger has indicated that the nearly completed transfer of Alex Song to Barcelona will be
followed by the arrival of a new midfielder at Arsenal and the replacement is likely to have
creative qualities as well.
Song started off as a raw talent in the defensive midfield for the Gunners but turned into a
complete box-to-box powerhouse by the end of last season.

Despite the pleasant moniker bestowed upon these contests by FIFA, international "friendlies"

Despite the pleasant moniker bestowed upon these contests by FIFA, international "friendlies"
between the United States and Mexico are usually about as chummy as a night out with Drake and
Chris Brown at a New York City night club... meaning you're pretty much guaranteed to see more than
the necessary share of testy exchanges and hostile attitudes.
While Wednesday's match didn't end up being the away win that we were all desperately hoping
for, the end result wasn't too bad. I mean, don't get me wrong, I really want the Portland Timbers
to earn 3 points again, it's just that they managed to score twice on the road which is encouraging
for the future of the team.
The Portland Timbers may not have won their first road game of the season on Wednesday night,
but they did manage to get a result that surely felt like a victory.
The Timbers drew Toronto FC, 2-2, at BMO Field on Wednesday after a late headed goal from
Darlington Nagbe. The Timbers attacker took advantage of some poor defending by TFC to get open and
equalize in the 82nd minute after Portland had relinquished a 1-0 lead earlier.
My apologies for the delay. Last night was taken up by watch the best action-adventure movie of
all time in IMAX, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
A surprisingly young team started against the Timbers on Wednesday night. Casey was given the night
off, Cummings was with Jamaica, and Mullan was given a chance to rest for most of the game after
his Achilles injury in Portland.
The police presence outside Oxford station on Wednesday night was illuminating. As a semicircle of
rozzers stood to attention outside the entrance to Coco – a small citywide chain better known as
a place for students to take mums and dads at the onset of the imminent academic year – Swindon
Town fans began to pile off the trains and down the steps into enemy territory.
In yet another story from the Facebook page of the MSHSL, Park Cottage Grove girls soccer coach
Greg Juba achieved his 400th career win Wednesday night with the Wolfpack's 3-0 victory over
Bemidji. In over 30 years of coaching girls soccer, Juba has an overall record of 400 wins, 151
losses and 48 ties.
One player who didn't figure into FC Dallas' 2-0 blanking of Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on
Wednesday night was Jackson. The Brazilian-born midfielder missed a third straight game due to
concussion symptoms and while he is on the road trip with the team, it remains uncertain as to
whether or not he will make his return to the pitch on Saturday night against Real Salt Lake at Rio
Tinto Stadium.
Images via PacificCoastNews.com Our first reaction? She looks fierce. Irina Shayk rolled out her
best Pucci (dress)Â and Gucci (heels)Â for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 launch party in London on
Wednesday night. Whilst there she hobnobbed with Olympians, Royals, and Z list reality stars. It's
also just been announced that Shayk will be taking over hosting [.
During his 22 years at Sao Paolo, goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni has has scored over 100 goals, thanks
to his tendency to take free kicks and penalties for the Brazilian side.
Last year the 39-year-old became the first goalkeeper in world football to achieve a
three-figure goal tally, and having recently returned from six-months out through a shoulder
injury, the three-time Campeonato winner was undoubtedly keen to get his name on the scoresheet in
Wednesday night's league match against Nautico.
Lots of teams and players will pull double duty this weekend after a busy Wednesday night.

What a night huh? The US won in Mexico certainly trumped the draws in Columbus and Toronto and
the win by Dallas in Vancouver. Still the busy night will turn into a busy weekend as MLS pushes
forward with nine games on the schedule for us.
