We've admittedly given short shrift to the fate of the WPS, which announced that it was
suspending operations for 2012. Over the years, we had expressed cautious optimism about the
league both on this site and elsewhere. The three year old league has definitely had some ups and
downs in the last couple of years.

Before I get too far into discussing the decision of WPS to cancel the 2012 season, let me say
that my initial reaction when the news first broke was that I was simply gutted. Gutted for every
fantastic person I've met covering the Independence and women's soccer in general.
Virginia Online Soccer News reached out to Dan Borislow, owner of the
magicJack team that has been battling with the WPS since he purchased the former Washington Freedom
club. Borislow is currently taking a lot of blame via social media outlets concerning his perceived
role in today's announcement by the WPS that it will suspend the 2012 season.
The day after U.S. soccer fans celebrated the women's CONCACAF win and their Olympic
qualification comes word that the WPS is on ice for the 2012 season.
Word began to filter out via players and bloggers on social networks like Twitter Monday
morning, and the league officially made the announcement midday.

I would guess the only thing worse than losing the most championed team in MLS history would be to
have them move about an hour away to a rival sports city.

Chelsea may not be bolting from Stamford Bridge for a new home after all.
The club came up short in its attempt to convince the necessary majority of the Chelsea Pitch
Owners to sell back the stadium land that the club sold to the supporter-spearheaded group, and as
a result, the club can't regain ownership of the entire grounds.
With the news just released today that the WPS has officially terminated the former Washington
Freedom franchise now known as magicJack is their now a glimmer of hope for fans in the D.C. area
that a return of the Freedom may be in the making?
Dan Borislow did respond to the Washington Post about the termination of his team: Read

The tragedy of 9/11 affected everyone differently, and especially being from New York and speaking
first-hand as having friends and former teammates who passed away in the terrible tragedy, it
certainly makes you step back and think of the things that are really important in your life.
John Hayden of the Washington Times writes of how 9/11 affected Major League Soccer 10 years ago.
I've written very little on the running feud between WPS and the Dan Borislow, owner of
Magicjack (née Washington Freedom), but events just after my last piece on the uncertain future of
women's pro soccer have rendered me past due. Beau Dure's post will bring you up to speed on how
the troubles with magicJack and Borislow started and then expanded earlier in the year:
Borislow moved the team to South Florida and renamed it after his product, magicJack,
the device that allows users to make phone calls over the Internet.
Do you ever wonder "What happened to the Washington Freedom?" Well, ever since Dan Borislow has
taken over the team it has been what one could only describe as "strange" and "unbelievable" and

An entire country, in which "World Cup" was still synonymous with "controversy", is
rediscovering football through the Women's World Cup. Reaching the semi finals of the tournament
for the first time in their history, Les Bleues have enchanted France after beating England on
penalties.
On Monday afternoon we tweeted about the fantastic overnight ratings for the USA/Brazil match on
Sunday. The game drew a 2.6 rating, the highest figure since the 1999 Final. That entire
tournament was based in the United States and had been heavily promoted by a wide array of media
outlets including ESPN.
The quarterfinals of the WWC are starting this weekend and the US will play Brazil on Sunday
at 11:30. The match will air on ESPN, Galavasion and ESPN3.com. Ian Darke will do the play by
play for US audiences. The tournament has not made a significant impression on the US sports
psyche. Although the games have been televised and promoted, this US team has not captured the
imagination of the American public.

After only four weeks of action the attendance figures for the WPS are looking very bleak.
Jenna Pel of AllWhiteKit.com is reporting that league wide average attendance this past week was
only 1,987.
The former Washington Freedom franchise now known as magicJack is not helping those numbers at all.
