The big Zach attack. (AP Photo)
Readers of this blog didn't agree, but Chivas USA's Zach Thornton was named MLS Goalkeeper of
the Year today, 11 years after first taking the honor with the Chicago Fire.
That time span between awards was undoubtedly one of the reasons the 34-year-old took the honor,
beating out the Galaxy's Donovan Ricketts and Seattle Sounders veteran Kasey Keller (both in their
first MLS seasons).

A demoralized Manchester United team takes on a flu-struck  Blackburn side at Old Trafford on
Saturday. Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping his side can recover from their disappointing 2-0 loss
at the hands of rivals Liverpool last weekend. A convincing win over Barnsley midweek in the
Carling Cup provided some encouragement for United's youngsters, but it should be back to business
for the bulk of the United first team.

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen believes the Premier League champions Manchester United are not the
same proposition minus the attacking threat of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, who left Old
Trafford in the summer to join Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively.

Less than a month ago, we approached a Premiership game away at Fulham with the goalkeeping
position in disarray. Almunia had been struck down for over a week with a chest infection, and with
Fabianski also out with a long term injury, young Mannone had been thrown into a Champions League
game in Liege.

A quick Sunday round-up for you.
Arsenal players got themselves on the scoresheet yesterday for their respective countries. Cesc
scored a lovely goal against Armenia, Philippe Senderos scored two excellent headers against
Luxembourg and William Gallas got one for France as Spain, Switzerland and France all won.

Craven Cottage has been the scene of some of our worst performances over the past few seasons,
following years of total dominance over them. Last season's insipid loss was probably the nadir of
our early season malaise, and also the day the Hangeland rumours began (which have continued as
recently as this week).

My Anfield hero, my Liverpool Legend, Jamie Carragher has not had the best start to the new
season.Three mistakes today against West Ham when he was dispossessed by novice Hines on two
minutes only for the youngster to hit the post. Then he was skinned by the same player and ended up
giving away a harsh penalty and finally he was found wanting at a West Ham corner when Carlton Cole
was left with a free header to score unmarked.

‘If in doubt, get it out!' It's a cry heard from many a parent and even coaches every weekend
around the country at junior football games.
It's a cry that can sum up in a nutshell the attitude English football has carried for many
years. And looking at some of England's attempts to win major championships since 1966, it's a
slogan that the national team should have had stitched to their shirts at times.

That rhythm clearly doesn't work when you're caught swapping spit by CCTV in a car park. Not to
worry.
Yesterday Wesley (finally) publicly professed his feelings for his new lady.
Thus, we are ready to more formally acknowledge and accept this new, fully-fledged WAG into the

Luck isn't really a word you would associate with Ben Foster. He's had more than his fair share
of misfortune during his stop-start career thus far although this could be the chance that the
England international has been waiting for and, if you can excuse the pun, I'm sure he's ready to
grab it with both hands.

A few things have occurred to me in these last few days when talk 0nce again turned to Lady
Nina's shares and what was to happen to them.........
I have always been of the opinion that David Dein was merely waiting in the wings for his
opportunity to return to the club that he loves and supports and that he ran for the best part of
24 years.

To go or not to go; that is the question. It seems like we've been talking about the Xabi Alonso
transfer saga this entire summer - watching as Real Madrid and Rafa Benitez went head-to-head over
quite possibly the most important midfielder in our squad next to Gerrard.
At a point earlier this summer, I would have been fine watching Alonso leave, so long as we had
a viable option waiting in the wings.

In Cristiano Ronaldo's opinion, "I don't know."
Yes, after weeks and months and maybe even years at this stage, of will he, won't he, it would
appear we have got out biggest indication yet that Cristiano Ronaldo may well be about to become a
Real Madrid player after all.

Gerard Pique certainly showed his ability in the fleeting chances he was given at Manchester
United, scoring a couple of goals in Europe as well as proving himself strong defensively. However,
with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic too difficult to displace, Pique had to look for other options
