No a real shocker for most folks out there, Major League Soccer has announced the 2009 Coach of
the Year is LA Galaxy front man Bruce Arena.
The turnaround in LA this year has been nothing short of remarkable. Arena found a way to get
everything on board with stars like Landon Donovan and David Beckham by plugging in solid veterans
and excellent young stars like Omar Gonzalez and Sean Franklin.

I won't lie to you all, I've had a case of the Mondays. As much as I want to post a big long
edition of things tonight I just for the life of me don't have the time to do so tonight. Instead I
have a couple links with very short comments on them.
McCarty Re-signs with FCD (link) Good stuff by Dallas to get one of their
better midfielders back for next year.

Without a doubt, Sunday's game between Chelsea and Manchester United is the biggest of the
season between the two clubs who have the best chance to win the Premier League title this season
(sorry Arsenal fans). So, it's no wonder that so much importance is being placed on this game. Not
that who wins will decide anything, but it will be a massive psychological boost for the winning
team and will show which club has what it takes to win the title.

Could this work of art kill England's World Cup Bid?
OK so perhaps the title is a tad hyperbolic, but really things are getting ridiculous. A quick
refresher course for those of you who have missed this: England (as you all should know) is bidding
to host the 2018 World Cup. Recently there was a conference in London at which Jack Warner, a FIFA
vice-president, was present.

*Even ardent Italophobes sometimes have to doff their cap to La Dolce Vita. The Stadio Olimpico was
so sparsely attended for tonight's Roma v Fulham clash, that despite being a veggie, I thought
about eating Saltimbocca alla Romana in honour of the stayaway fans. When they consider a game
meaningless, Italian tifosi vote with their feet.

Liverpool only managed a 1-1 draw away to Lyon tonight which may not be enough to qualify for the
quarter finals of the Champions League. A depleted Liverpool team had most of the possession away
to Lyon and had a few good attempts on goal saved by the Lyon keeper, until sub Ryan Babel scored
with a magnificent thunderbolt shot on 83 mins to give the Reds a deserved lead.

It seems like the clock had been turned back to 1998 this year as a revival for Chivas USA
keeper Zach Thornton took place. It was just 11 seasons ago that Thornton won his first keeper of
the year, now he has two as the league announced today that he was named the 2009 Goalkeeper of the

Yeah, that's right: we're posting short-tents of professional footy players and asking you to
pick a winner. It's what we do.
John Terry is a regular for these types of situations; let's all give him two snaps for that. As
for Mr. Cole, it's nice to see him back on the pitch and (quite obviously) in full working
order.

Vote for Claudio or Davy. They both are nominated twice. Claudio's goals include his beautiful free
kick in week 10 against Chivas and week 19's shot from the middle of the field against LA. Davy's
goals include the week 1 blast against Toronto and the week 13 goal against New England. I have
hard time deciding my favorite.

With the season now over, the Wizards have some questions to ask about the team itself and the

With the Ballon d'Or nominations finally releasing this weekend, the headlines have mostly been
devoted to the fact that world champions Italy have no representation whatsoever. But why blame the
press for paying excessive attention to an irrelevant detail? After all, the award itself is
destined to be heading Lionel Messi's way, which means very little is there to be talked about in
terms of debating the winner, right?

One of the most bizarre aspects of the U.S. men's national team's 2-2 vs. Costa Rica was Costa
Rican head coach Rene Simoes' ejection and the subsequent dust-up that saw a team trainer also
tossed and Simoes escorted from the field by security.
That scene not only cntributed to the additional stoppage time the United States used to find
last-gasp equalizer, it also provided some comic relief.
