LLTO La Liga Tuesday Review

La Liga Report 03 November @ 06:03 AM EST

It was a rare week in La Liga becasue Barca did not win. Don't get too excited because they did not lose either. But you have to hand it to Osasuna. They have played as well as anyone recently and they gave the treble winners a battle 1-1 leaving the door open for clubs to move up the board a few points.

Cross Border Thoughts: Mexico and Canada

Major League Soccer Talk 01 November @ 07:33 AM EST

Franco should be a hero in Mexico/PA Sports Image

I understand this is a website dedicated to MLS and US Soccer, but please indulge me in this moment of personal privilege about our neighbors to the south and our neighbors to the north.

Guille Franco opened his Premier League account yesterday, playing for a less competitive West Ham side than former Mexican striker Jared Borgetti did in Bolton a few years back.

LLTO La Liga Picks of the Week (Oct.31-Nov.1)

La Liga Report 31 October @ 06:09 AM EST

That's right La Liga fans! It is Halloween weekend and you know what that means, right? It's the time of year that everyone can enjoy eating candy, scaring the crap out of one another, and if you're female you can dress in any revealing outfit that you want to! Look at this fine young lady ( I don't think she really went to nursing school).

Liverpool Hope To Tie José Reina With Lucrative Long-Term Deal

Anfield Talk 29 October @ 01:42 PM EST
Liverpool intend to reflect José Reina's status as one of the finest goalkeepers in the game with a lucrative new contract that will secure his long-term future at Anfield.
The 27-year-old still has three years remaining on a five-year contract extension he was awarded in 2007. However, in keeping with club policy not to allow key players to enter the final two years of their contracts, and having tied such players as Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun to new long-term deals over the summer, Reina is next in line for a contract offer. A Pellegrini no le gustan las Copas

Pellegrini es un hombre de costumbres. Repite comidas, corbatas, discurso... y ridículos coperos. El ingeniero tiene un problema con este torneo desde que llegó a España. El humillante 4-0 del Real Madrid en Alcorcón que tanto escuece al madridismo, debió parecerle un déj vu al entrenador chileno. Click to continue reading...

Atlético Madrid Hits Rock Bottom

La Liga Talk 26 October @ 03:45 AM EST

Halloween will arrive in a few days, but for Atlético Madrid, this season has been a complete nightmare from the beginning. Los rojiblancos hit their low point with a dull thud on Saturday when they could not fend off a nine-man Mallorca team and settled for a 1-1 draw at the Vicente Calderón.

LLTO La Liga Picks of the Week (Oct. 24-25)

La Liga Report 24 October @ 06:05 AM EST

Sevilla has been among the world's best this year and will likely overcome their frustrating loss last week by beating Espanyol 2-0. Atletico Madrid has had a tough start to the year and has been among the league's biggest disappointments. Mallorca on the other hand has been a nice surprise this year and is among the teams that make up the top half of the league table.

Are the Best Young Players in the World Shunning the EPL?

EPL Talk 13 October @ 11:42 PM EST

Who are the very best young players in the world? For the purposes of this article, "young players" are those no older than 22.

First there are the obvious: Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Alexandre Pato, Francesc Fabregas, Karim Benzema, etc. Their class has been established before this mysterious "young" label vanished, and subsequently they command enormous transfer fees, if their clubs are even willing to part with them.

Why is Defense So Reviled in Football?

La Liga Talk 08 October @ 12:07 PM EST

This is the kind of space Xavi thinks he deserves.

The theory is that because of the low amount of scoring in football, using particularly protective and cynical tactics ruins the sport whose nature inhibits a high amount of goals per match. Football's common nickname is "The Beautiful Game," but from where did that phrase initially originate?

Sevilla FC’s Defeat of Real Madrid Announces Their Presence in the La Liga Title Race

La Liga Talk 05 October @ 03:30 AM EST

In terms of the football played on the pitch, the Sevilla Real Madrid clash qualified as the best match of the young La Liga season. Honorable mentions to Athletic Bilbao's 3-2 victory over Villarreal CF in Round 3 and the pulsating 2-2 draw between Valencia and Atlético Madrid last Saturday night, but this fixture contained everything that a writer and a supporter wanted: back stories prior to the game, vigorous and attacking football, tensions boiling over the players at hand, and incredible stops by both goalkeepers.

Have Madrid finally got their man?

SoccerLens 28 September @ 11:49 AM EST

I'm not talking about Cristiano Ronaldo. Not talking about Kaka. Not Benzema and not about Raul Albiol and Xabi Alonso.

I'm talking about Arsene Wenger. Scratch that, I'm actually talking about Manuel Pellegrini.

Throughout Florentino Perez' epic reign last time out, and at the very top of his hit list when he got reinstated to the role of Real Madrid president, he has coveted the Arsenal godfather more than any other.

Modest Improvement For Madrid

La Liga Talk 25 September @ 11:00 AM EST

Villarreal 0-2 Real Madrid
0-1 Ronaldo, 2'
0-2 Kaka (pen), 73'

With four wins in four league games and three clean sheets in the bunch, it's statistically difficult to find fault with Real Madrid's early season performances. They have ostensibly done everything right in their opening games: they have incorporated all the new faces into the mix, gotten big contributions from old favorites like Raul and Guti, and seen their world record signing get off to a record-breaking start.

Roaming Robin the focal point in Wenger’s master plan

The Arsenal Column 23 September @ 08:30 AM EST

Robin van Persie's new role at the tip of the Arsenal front three is sought to bring more variety to side's attacking play.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Few would have had Thomas Vermaelen as Arsenal's top scorer in the early stages of the season, not least because he is a defender but the Belgian had also yet to kick a ball in the Premier League before his £10million move from Ajax and who others decided against signing because of his height.

Sevilla Flies Underneath the Radar

While the press and the media focus most of their ink and font on the newly built Real Madrid and the continued brilliance of FC Barcelona, Sevilla carries on with their consistent good form. On the surface, there is nothing too sexy that immediately grabs headlines, but arguably, Luís Fabiano is currently playing as the best forward in the world since the continuation of World Cup Qualifying at the beginning of June.
