Croatia have qualified for three successive World Cups since Independence, reaching the Semi Final
in 1998. It's a remarkable record for a nation of 4 Million. It could be about to end.
Croatia may have been resurgent under Slaven Bilić, qualifying emphatically for the EURO 2008
tournament, pimping McClaren's England along the way, but 2007-8 was a long time ago.

I have been travelling around in Europe for a month, and although with the break, there wasn't much
football on my busy programme, I did nevertheless notice some things:-I was in Barcelona when R.D.
Espanyol inaugurated their new stadium by winning a 3-0 victory against Liverpool. I have always
felt some sympathy for Español for being the "little guys" in Barcelona, and was happy to see them

Liverpool have lost their opening two games of their pre-season, and although manager Rafael
Benitez isn't concerned by the results or the performances, he wants to see his side return to
winning ways when they take on Thailand this evening.
Speaking to the clubs official website, Benitez said, "We know there is going to be a fantastic
crowd here and that they will be giving us great support, so of course we want to win for them.

In a week when the heavies of European football struggled to make any significant impact around the
globe*, comes another surprising result straight out of the bowels of Ireland. Shamrock Rovers, a
team whose name sounds more like a wrestling move or a Robbie Williams album title than a football
team, made a good account of themselves and put up an almighty battle against the squillion-dollar
boys of Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have spent the last few weeks haggling with Liverpool to take Xabi Alonso to the
Santiago Bernabeu.
The Spanish giants are hell-bent on acquiring the Spanish international, but the Merseysiders have
stubbornly refused to lower their asking price as the two clubs continue to wrangle back and forth.

or Gael Clichy.

The new season is almost upon us so, fresh from the training ground, here is the very latest
Heart of Clackmannannshire team photograph ahead of the new season. The more observant amongst you
may have noticed a couple of new signings for The Clackas. Jim Reaper joins the club from Steaua
Transylvania, whilst veteran Bert Harris has travelled north to finish his career in Scotland after
forty-one glorious seasons with Royal Perivale, Perfidious Albion and a disastrous spell in Austria
playing for Flaccid Vienna, which ended after an interview deemed so hate-filled that he was barred
for life from entering anywhere in Europe outside of the United Kingdom.

Yes, Van the Man finally signed (OFFICIAL) a new long-term contract (so what's that four

Germany started qualification for the 2010 World Cup last week against Liechtenstein and Finland.
Despite the generally positive results, Joachim Löw needs to quickly find the solutions to the
problems that have been plaguing the German team since the Euro 2008 Final in Vienna. 1. There is a

A great front page today from the French sports daily L'Equipe after last weekend's shock loss to

Wow, a huge upset in the first round of European World Cup qualifiers as Austria beat France 3-1.
When you look at those lineups, there is no way that France should not at least have come out of
Vienna without a draw, and even that would have to be considered an upset. I am sure that the
pressure is now squarely on Raymond Domenech, but it really should be on the French FA for keeping
Domenech after the debacle that was the French performance at Euro 2008.

I don't know how he's done it but former Spurs hero Gary Lineker has landed himself basically the

Lineker has managed to land himself not only a hot chick half his age, but also a working existence
based purely on watching football and golf.

Few foreign players have adapted better - or as quickly - to the unique demands of top-flight
football in England than Fernando Torres. In his first season, after arriving at Liverpool 12
months ago, he scored 33 goals in all competitions.
Yet as the prolific Spain striker ponders how he can improve next season, having set the bar so
high, he is swift to pay tribute to the part that Rafael Benítez played in his rapid and
spectacular progress.

Germany 0-1 Spain. The chokers are no more. In a hard-fought but dominated battle in Vienna, La
Selección wiped all of their historical fears and under-achieving inhibitions away: one swift
movement (as swift as Fernando Torres's run behind Philipp Lahm, and swifter than his finishing
touch over Jens Lehmann) to swipe the European Cup right from [.

Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has told Fernando Torres that he is still not as good as Thierry
Henry at his best, but could get there in time.
Torres was the match-winner for Spain in the Euro 2008 final as he latched onto a Xavi pass and
finished expertly past Lehmann.
Lehmann has been impressed by the Liverpool striker but feels there is still room for improvement.

Congratulations Cesc! I couldn't be happier for the man. I actually got to watch the first half of

and Cesc and Spain finally got their hands on a trophy.

Well done to Cesc Fabregas who was part of Spain's Euro 2008 winning side last night. Although
he was rather oddly substituted by loopy manager Luis Aragones Spain were never really troubled by
Germany and Fernando Torres' goal was enough to win it. Cesc said afterwards:
This the best day of my life as a football player.
