The 35-year-old sent an emotional goodbye message to Quakes supporters via Instagram, thanking them and everyone for their support during his six year spell at the club.

Bernardez, 35, announced that the 2017 season was his last at Avaya Stadium on the same day the Bay Area outfit announced that they had opted from exercising the option on the Honduran's contract.

I'll stress this important note right from the start, theydid not sign him through allocation, instead through his player rights that they held from drafting him in the 2007 expansion draft.

Osvaldo Alonso Makes Best XI

In most years Major League Soccer's Best XI ignores defensive minded midfielder. Last year, with five mids named to the XI, none were recognized. This year Osvaldo Alonso makes the Best XI. While the Honey Badger may not care, it seems right and just that MLS recognizes the utility of the role and Alonso's success at it.

That's because on Friday, the MLS Disciplinary Committee handed the Earthquakes defender a two-game suspension for reckless play for his hard tackle and subsequent kick to the head of Cooper, who will miss this weekend's game with concussion symptoms.

The Earthquakes' offense gets most of the attention paid to the team, and justifiably so given that they're nearing record breaking goal scoring totals. But you don't win a Supporters Shield without a good defense too, and that defense was on display tonight at CenturyLink field. The Earthquakes flooded the midfield to choke off Seattle's buildup and Victor Bernardez was a titan in central defense who shut down Fredy Montero all game.
