for another season with the group stages kicking off this week. 32 of Latin America's finest will
compete to succeed Santos as champions, and thanks to the increasing strength of
the Brazilian economy and the country's increasing ability to keep hold of and attract their finest
countrymen, Brazil is once considered the trophy's most likely destination come the final in

In a small secluded part of the world, the new stars of tomorrow are taking part in a newly
formed tournament, which in years to come will be considered as one of the better known youth
tournaments, rivalling the Milk Cup and others where the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ronaldinho and
Lionel Messi have graced us with their precocious talents.
It's that time of the year again when local pride is at stake in the numerous state
championships which are prevalent in the opening months of the Brazilian football calendar. From
Amapá in the far north to Rio Grande do Sul in the south, from Acre in the west to Paraíba in the
far east of the country, twenty seven regions of Brazil will be involved in their own local
championship, mixing the big boys with the smaller village teams, with each club hoping to win
their respective title and qualify for a place in next year's edition of the national cup, Copa
Brazil.
A little over a decade ago, South Melbourne FC took part in the FIFA Club World Championship as
champions of Oceania, trying their luck in a group containing England's Manchester United, Brazil's
Vasco da Gama and Mexico's Nexaca. South Melbourne could then claim to be Australia's most
successful club, winners of four National Soccer League titles.

Universidad de Chile made club history last night by reaching their first ever continental final
in South America. The Chilean champions defeated Brazilian giants Vasco da Gama in last night's
Copa Sudamericana semi-final 2nd leg by two goals to nil and, thus, went through 3-1 on
aggregate.
Gustavo Canales and Eduardo Vargas were on hand to score the goals for Universidad who became
the first Chilean team to reach a major final of a South American club competition since Colo Colo
played in the final of the Sudamericana in 2006.

The first half of the Brazilian Championship came to a close this weekend with a number of local
derbies highlighting the schedule. It's all part of a strategy to avoid teams fielding
second-string lineups in the final round of the competition, and the most fascinating matchup took
place on Sunday between Santos and Sao Paulo.
The Campeonato Brasileiro has reached the halfway stage and it once again is proving to be a
tightly fought contest with six teams at the top of the standings separated by just five
points.
Corinthians currently lead the way with 37 points from 19 games but they have already lost four
games this season including yesterday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Palmeiras who, as a result of
the victory, maintained their sixth placed position and are not far behind the league leaders.
