Down to ten men and trailing, the Timbers equalized late at BC Place to salvage a draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Portland dominated possession in the match, but the ‘Caps scored first in the 24th minute through a Camilo free kick from just outside the area.
The Houston Dynamo were without three starters due to international duty, but that didn't slow down the men in orange or stop them from continuing their home dominance. Behind goals from Giles Barnes and Warren Creavalle, the Dynamo (2-1-0, 6 points) handed the Vancouver Whitecaps (2-1-0, 6 points) their first loss of the season with a 2-1 win.
Nigel Reo-Coker has played 45 meaningful minutes in a Whitecaps jersey. 45 minutes is all it took for people in Vancouver to embrace him and his playing and leadership style. When Reo-Coker came on in the 45 minute mark against ... Continue reading →
Yes, there is plenty of room for improvement, but TFC 2013 did many things right on the road in Vancouver today. The first half was controlled by Toronto, if smothering the other side but having little firepower yourself can be called control. The second half had the Whitecaps put Reo Coker into the game and their energy went up.
The Fire have an opportunity to clinch first place in the CarolinaChallenge Cup tournament with a win or a draw versus the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. All three of the other participants (Charleston, Vancouver, and Houston) have at least one defeat and the Fire are 2-0 after beating Charleston 2-1 on Alex's late game golazo.
Michael Nanchoff has been training with Portland as a guest player since training camp opened and it appears has done enough to earn contract negotiations. Portland could not sign Nanchoff because of MLS' quirky rules and the fact that the Vancouver Whitecaps still had the right of first refusal.

It's become apparent this season that this is not last year's Chivas USA squad.
Last season, particularly towards the end, Chivas USA lost games and lost them without showing a whole lot of fight. This year however, the fight and more importantly, the results are more than present for the Goats.
This was a Banner Game for MLS This was two of the exciting, young teams in the league going head-to-head and ‘Caps-Crew had it all: the speed and athleticism that make MLS great, excellent technical skill from both sides, young, exciting players and a stunning goal.
The Whitecaps defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1, the goals coming from Daigo Kobayashi and Kenny Miller. Watch the Match In Media video and view the slideshow below. The slideshow: The sun peeking through at beautiful BC Place:

The LA Galaxy lead the Western Conference in goals this week, but Vancouver, Dallas, and RSL also posted wins, while Chivas and Seattle fell to Eastern opposition. Skipping ahead from the league's most storied club to one of its youngest, the selection process gets rather easier. You got to think the 'Caps'll wrest the Voyageurs Cup from Toronto pretty soon, giving Vancouver some hardware and resetting at least one part of this list. Anyway, for those of you who didn't read yesterday's series opener, we'll be taking a look at the best and brightest goals
In theTimbers'first year in Major League Soccer, 2011 saw a number of teams use their natural picks in the allocation order. Before the start of the season Vancouver, Portland, and D.C. all used their picks while Philadelphia, New England, and Seattle made picks while the season was in mid swing.
In the past I have criticized Major League Soccer for their tardiness in publishing their schedule for the next season. So imagine my surprise today when MLS announced the dates and opponents for the 2013.
The 18th MLS season will kick off on Saturday, March 2, 2013, with six matches and continue that same weekend with three games on Sunday, March 3.
On this show we talk to the lovable losers of MLS this year. We also discuss the previous playoff games, the "Re-Mexicanization" of Chivas USA, and bring in Shawn the Referee to discuss his thoughts on the the referee decisions in the Playoffs. Correspondents include:
Reading through everything that came out of the Houston Dynamo victory against Vancouver, one might get the idea that with one simple win, the fortunes of the men in orange were completely turned around. Regrettably, I don't think that's the case. Was last Saturday's triumph a salve for the wounds opened over the previous two matches?
In their final match in the Desert Friendlies, the Houston Dynamo fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1. The Dynamo went up early with Bobby Boswell heading in a free kick from Giles Barnes, but the Whitecaps drew even three minutes later and got a game winner in the second half.
The Dynamo started the match with four of their back five starters - Tally Hall, Kofi Sarkodie, Boswell, and Jermaine Taylor.
Ever since the Portland Timbers' inception into MLS it seems like fans have been calling for one prominent element to be added to the squad: a creative midfielder. While Franck Songo'o certainly played better as a forward rather than a midfielder (where he refused to track back to defend) he was, without a doubt, the primary creative element.
After a rough start to the season the academy teams have seen some success in their recent games. Here is what the Timbers website had to say:
The Portland Timbers Academy teams split their matches against Cascadia-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency over the weekend at South Surrey Athletic Park in Surrey, B.
SANDY, Utah- Real Salt Lake will be focused from the opening whistle when they host the Vancouver Whitecaps at Rio Tinto Stadium this Saturday. After coming out flat against the LA Galaxy and conceding two goals in the first 13 minutes, RSL is ready to put that game behind them and move forward.

TFC: Calm, Cool, Collected How many times did those three words show up in the same sentence as "Toronto FC" last year? Probably only when accompanied by "not." But the Reds looked calm and composed, compact and difficult to break down in defense.
The Cascadia Cup will be a little more spread out in 2013 than it was in 2012 when the Timbers' first match didn't come until 5/26. Like last year, the Timbers will finish out the Cascadia Cup with back to back matches against Vancouver and Seattle. Worth noting: Seattle host Vancouver on 10/9, making that a full Cascadia round-robin over the course of eight days.
