Well, you know the traditional start of these articles by now. "Every couple of seasons a new
striker emerges on the horizon, blablabla...". We had Geels, Cruyff, Koolhof, Kist, Kieft, van
Basten, Bosman, Gilhaus, Van Loen, Mols, Houtman, Van Nistel, Kluivert, Haisselbaink, Makaay,
Huntelaar, Van Persie, Luuk de Jong, [read more]
For today's introduction we are going back into the mists of time, when men were men and not
floppy overcooked strings of spaghetti like Busquets, Nani and Pepe.
England were World Champions and Man Utd had recently won the European Cup. For
the younger reader who has grown up in the Sky era, there can be no understanding of the excitement
and national pride that both events stirred.

Lionel Messi has been named by FIFA as the best player of 2011 for the third straight year.
Messi equals Platini, Cruyff and Van Basten, the only players to ever win three Ballon d'Or
titles.
Messi took almost 48% of the vote, with Ronaldo second with less than 22% and Xavi was a distant
third with just over 9%.

FIFA handed tonight the 2011 GOLDEN BALL ( BALON D´OR) AWARD - the Best Player in World Football -
to FC BARCELONA player LIONEL MESSI. Its his third straight Golden Ball & puts the 24 year old
Argentine in the elite class of 3 x winners like Platini, Van Basten & Cruyff. The second place
was given to REAL MADRID player CRISTIANO RONALDO & third to FC BARCELONA player XAVI HERNANDEZ.

Martin Atkinson is Mr Consistency MAN OF THE DAY Michel Vorm was outstanding again in goal for
Swansea, saving a Clint Dempsey penalty, securing his seventh clean sheet and even trending on
Twitter.
A miracle. That's exactly what Lyon needed to go through to the knockout stages of the Champions
League after disappointing in the five first games and scoring only on two occasions. To qualify,
Les Gones not only needed Ajax to lose, but also had seven goals to catch up on the Dutch side.
Holy Bratwursten Batman, the Zjermans are bitchslappin' us
We fooled them yet again!
Back in 1986, we played Germany ( West-Germany to be precise) in a friendly and we missed a
couple of regulars ( Van Basten and Rijkaard weren't there) while Arnold Muhren and Erwin Koeman
weren't selected yet.
People talk to me about Barcelona's current team as the greatest ever. I even hear stories about
the Ajax side that had Johan Cruyff. The AC Milan side with the Dutch trio of Riijkaart, Van Basten
and Gullit is always mentioned as well. Hell, even United's 1999 treble team has been dubbed as one
of the best.

Despite links to Italy, Spain and Russia, as well as Manchester, Robin Van Persie has effortlessly
continued with his astonishing form for Arsenal with another stunning performance, goal and pair of
assists. In response to the speculation, fellow Dutch legend and former Netherlands manager Marco
Van Basten told the Sunday Mirror, "'I still think Arsenal [.

Last week that fine gent and upstanding journo, Martin Samuel, claimed that Arsenal can no
longer attract genuine world stars, is this right?
For a start lets be honest have we actually ever signed someone at the top of their game?
Bergkamp was a truly world class player, but when we signed him, he was in a massive dip, the
top teams at the time AC Milan, Madrid just were not interested.
John Terry is quoted today in The Telegraph speaking of speculation regarding our new manager. As
you can imagine, he was asked on his opinions about all the names being linked with the club and in
particular Guus Hiddink and Mark Hughes, especially as Hughes resigned from Fulham yesterday and is
looking to manage a "bigger" club.
As you can imagine the stories of who Chelsea are lining up as a possible replacement at the club
will continue to run and run until Chelsea make an official announcement. I am wondering who you
the fans want to manage our club.
We have to bear in mind the remit that will come with the job.
Who's bat-shit crazy enough to assume this nearly untenable position?
Charmer
King Carlo is no more. Sacked mere seconds after his post-match presser at Goodison via a
face-to-face with the bean counter, Ancelotti now finds himself free to pursue various avenues,
including a potential job in the Italian capital.
As my readers know, I am more of an AC Milan fan than an Inter one. Lately however, the
Rossoneri seem to be on a parallel path to their owner, Berlusconi. AC Milan is synonymous amongst
football fans with fuoriclasse. The most titled club in the past 20 years has always had
an image of style, class, elegance, think Maldini, Van Basten, Sacchi, Baresi, Shevchenko, etc
here.
Pele, Eusebio, Di Stefano, Puskas, Van Basten, Cruyff and Charlton are a few footballers that
roll off the tongue when one draws up lists or have in-depth debates about who the greatest
footballer was of the 20th Century.
These lofty names featured in a football documentary shown on Sky Sports in the last few months
called Football's Greatest.

Grant: decent chap, poor manager
So Uncle Avram has indeed been winging it in English football all this time. West Ham's abject
capitulation at St Andrews last night confirmed what many of has had long-suspected: Grant doesn't
know what he's doing and admitted as much after the match, saying "I didn't know what to say to
them at half-time.

My favourite strip is the Sampdoria home kit of 1990-92. There are actually two slightly
different kits, as the 1991-92 version has the Scudetto shield on the left breast following Samp's
Serie A title win. However, it seems churlish to distinguish between the shirt worn winning the
Scudetto and the shirt that recognises that triumph.
I just saw this video with the top 10 goals of the year and thought it's worth sharing. Hamit
Altintop won the ‘FIFA Puskas Award' for the goal of the year but all the other goals are worth
watching as well.
It seems Nasri's mesmerizing run against Porto was 5th but I haven't been able to find any
official list declaring the order.
