Under-20 World Cup: USA 4, Cameroon 1 (A Look Back)

Soccer By Ives 30 September @ 09:34 AM EST

Thomas Rongen changed half his team, but stuck with his formation, and a decision that started out looking like it might be a stubborn mistake wound up being a smart move that has the U.S. Under-20 national team in great shape at the Under-20 World Cup.

The Americans trotted out a 4-3-3 formation for the second straight match, doing so despite the same formation being largely ineffective in a 3-0 loss to Germany.

The future

As both U.S. and Mexico fans sit disappointed after quarterfinal losses in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, respective supporters from both sides must now gaze to the future with most of these respective players.
The next step for some of the Under-20 players is the Under-23 sides and Olympic qualifying, but some might also contend for playing time with the full national team. Click to continue reading...

So long, farewell

Weariness, yellow cards and nerves in front of goal do in the U.S. versus Austria. They go out in extra time in the quarterfinal rounds, clearly somewhat fatigued still from their overtime match versus Uruguay. Yet they've also got to be kicking themselves for some of the chances they let get away in this match. Click to continue reading...

American lads move on

Sideline Views 12 July @ 09:10 AM EST
I didn't get to see much of the US-Uruguay Under-20 match because of the Mexico-Argentina match. From what I did see and read about the match, though, it seemed like the US struggled and took a step back after wins against Poland and Brazil. In the end, though, the young Americans battled back after allowing a late goal and leveled terms in the 87th and then Michael Bradley won it in extra time. Click to continue reading...

Perkolater

Sideline Views 11 July @ 08:35 PM EST
I cringed a little when I saw that UCLA's Brian Perk was in goal for the U.S. U20s versus Uruguay. Not because I don't think he's an excellent goalkeeper, but because it's difficult to go out cold in a tournament just at the knockout rounds begin.
So I hoped an early U.S. goal would ease the pressure on Brian.
It didn't happen, and a slight bobble by Brian cost the first goal (like most goals, his was the last in a series of mistakes, but it's always the last one that people notice). Click to continue reading...

We want Gabe!

Sideline Views 08 July @ 12:32 PM EST
It's intrinsic human nature to want more, more, more. As well as the core of forwards that Rongen has used in the U20 World Cup thus far have played (all have assists or goals), there's still curiosity about what the others can offer.
Especially when it comes to Gabe Ferrari, who plays professionally in Italy. He looked good in the pre-tournament friendly match versus Haiti, and I for one was hoping to see him in this competition even in brief appearances. Click to continue reading...

Sad to say

Sideline Views 06 July @ 02:07 PM EST
When I talked to Gabriel Ferrari about playing for the U.S. U20 team, he didn't seem to have any regrets about choosing to represent his birth country over that of his parents (Ferrari also holds Italian and Brazilian citizenship).
However, that didn't mean that he didn't pine for a little bit of what players from other countries have had at the U20 World Cup - strong support. Click to continue reading...
