On 19 November 1989 -- twenty years ago today -- Trinidad & Tobago and the USA met each other in
Port-of-Spain for their final World Cup qualifier match for the 1990 World Cup in Italy. The
circumstances and consequences of that match have made it the most important match in US soccer
history, and marked the start of the modern era in American soccer.

[I'm going to make this the featured post for the next five days, except for Saturday and next
Wednesday when the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL playoff is being played.] Next Thursday is the 20th
anniversary of that historic World Cup qualifier between Trinidad & Tobago and USA. In my opinion,
and I doubt I'm the only person who feels this way, it was the most important match in the history
of US men's soccer because of where they were at that time and where they went from that point.

I sent out a tweet about the U-20 World Cup early last week, and had a post in the works, but I
never got around to finishing it until now. The group stage of the competition is over and the bare
facts tell the story: none of the CONCACAF qualifiers finished in the top two of their respective
groups, two finished in third place, and other other two bottom of their group.

It's always encouraging when you field a bad team and win on the road. It took some luck —
Cornell Glenn hitting the crossbar, Ricardo Clark turning into Steven Gerrard for a split second
— but the United States beating Trinidad and Tobago 1-0, is a result the Americans probably had
to get.
But let me reiterate, this team Bob Bradley selected was bad.

You know you want to see the final scores before the matches are even started, so here they are.
All results brought to you by Crystal Ball Corporation "When you need to know what your bookie does
not".
All predictions are of course subject to the minor caveat that this is futbol, football and
soccer where anything can and will happen except what you think will happen.

World Cup qualifying games over the last weekend have set the race to qualify in the CONCACAF
group on a knife's edge.
The top 3 teams qualify for the World Cup and at this point no team is a safe bet to qualify,
as it's neck and neck among the top four teams. Â The fourth place team does get a last chance to
qualify by playing a home and away against the 5th place team in South America qualifying.

Trinidad & Tobago striker Dwight Yorke has retired from professional football with immediate
effect. The end had been coming for a while, and to be honest, Yorke's career had been on fumes
since 2006, but now that this moment has arrived it's time to acknowledge the end of a historic era
in Caribbean football.

Estadio Azteca, Mexico - Thin, smoggy air, and an intimidating venue for away teams
Soccer fans and pundits have analyzed the CONCACAF qualifying performances to near death, but
have we all missed the point?
Of the eighteen Round 4 World Cup qualifying matches in CONCACAF (so far), how many matches have
home teams lost?

As the standings were shaken up today, you might wonder if some of the nations fighting for a
World Cup Qualifying spot in CONCACAF are taking things a bit too much for granted. Â They
shouldn't.
In today's 6th round of matches, Â all the home teams won. Now only 3 points separate the top 4
teams.

I haven't done a roundup of league action throughout the Caribbean in the past. Information from
the island countries isn't easy to get and is very spotty when it does arrive. (But thanks to Edwin
for his regular updates on Puerto Rican football!) It's past time for me to do the same kind of
update that I do for Central America, so here it goes.

Russell Latapy is the new manager of Trinidad & Tobago, but from reading the words of the T&TFF and
Jack Warner (but I repeat myself), it's hard to know for how long he will maintain that post.
Warner has said about the appointment that "You can never have total confidence", which is a great
way of not engendering any confidence.

US Soccer announced this morning that Bob Bradley has called in Chris Rolfe and Brian Carroll to
replace two players who suffered injuries in their Sunday matches, Robbie Rogers (sore back) and
Pablo Mastoeni (knee). It's a shame I was looking forward to seeing Rogers play. And I
was about as excited to see Mastroeni play [.

I don't like this particular line of thinking from Greg Lalas' look ahead to the U.S. Men's
National Team's (aka, Yanquis) 2008: "All of that [ed. - "what's 'that' you're asking? Well, read
his article and find out."] will pay massive dividends come '09, when the U.S. heads to South
Africa for the Confederations Cup [.
