The Downside of Europe: Maurice Edu Edition

A More Splendid Life 22 October @ 07:59 AM EST
Could you imagine Marvel Wynne or O'Brien White getting racially abused in the BMO parking lot by a Toronto FC supporter? Not that I'm of the whole "there's no racism here, we live under Pierre Trudeau's beautiful multicultural rainbow where nothing ever goes wrong" school of Canadian self back-slappery, but let's just say if it happened, I suspect you would get headlines in every single national daily, weeks of op-eds about how racism persists in Canada, and anti-racist tifos in the south end that would make Dichio's tribute look like a bit of tissue paper. Sir Bobby Robson Documentary: 1933-2009

EPL Talk 17 October @ 05:30 AM EST

One of the misfortunes of living outside the United Kingdom and supporting English football is that when a legend dies, there are incredible heartwarming documentaries and news programs shown in the UK profiling that hero but they're unavailable due to rights restrictions where I, and many of you, live.

Innocent Victims

The Fake Sigi Schmid Blog 15 October @ 07:28 PM EST
From Dan:
The nature of sports being what it is, the greater outpouring of sympathy was for the one who survived ... but fan tributes aren't really equipped for innocent victims. A simple jersey number was enough for a very moving tribute for a recovering player, but a soccer game is an impossible context to show adequate respect for Ashley Roberta and her family's loss.

Wrecking Ball

I'm a few days late with this, but here's Springsteen's tribute to Giants Stadium, from the opening night of the final stand there. Love the line about the Giants. And the mosquitoes. It's got a feel similar to Blood Brothers, but he also sounds a little bit like Dave Bielanko from Marah on it, which is a cool way of bringing the influence full circle.

Tuesday's Column: The Damned United

100 Percent Soccer 06 October @ 09:35 AM EST

Read the column here.

(Sadly the wit and wisdom of Brian Clough - or at least my attempted tribute to it in the last line of that column is apparently lost on the copy editors here; it should read "the top one," singular, not plural).

Check out the trailer.

I had the pleasure of speaking recently with actor Michael Sheen about the film and his role as Brian Clough.

FC United of Manchester & The Spirit of Volunteering

When one looks at the structure of small football clubs, it is impossible to conclude anything other than that these clubs would not be able to exist without people that selflessly give up their time for them. Coup D'etat; A New King
