One of the favorites to win this year's Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana opened its tournament with
a narrow victory over Botswana that can best be described as a roller coaster for John Mensah.
The Ghana captain endured highs and lows in Ghana's Group D opener, scoring the only goal before
receiving a red card and then picking up a hamstring injury.
This was one result i was not expecting, however one i totally agree with. Right from the start
of the tournament and even through out the Qualifying period, the Lions of Teranga had established
themselves as one of the very few sides who were strong favourites to lift the AFCON trophy on Feb
12th.

So the African Cup of Nations got underway yesterday with a couple of shocking results that i
was not expecting. Hosts Equatorial Guinea making their first ever appearance at the AFCON picked
up 3 points from a Libyan side who failed to make their possession count.
However, the most shocking result was Senegal's 2-1 defeat to Zambia.
Losing key players at any stage of the season is far from ideal, so when clubs lose in-form star
men during the Africa Cup of Nations it must be particularly frustrating for Premier League
managers.
The turn of the year is notoriously difficult for clubs – with injuries, suspensions and fatigue
playing a part after a busy festive period.
The African Nations Cup kicks off this weekend, which provides a handy
opportunity for under performing league players to show what they're about! Unfortunately,
perennial favourites Egypt failed to qualify for this alongside Algeria,
Cameroon and Nigeria.
There's some news you might be interested in. Might. More, after the jump:

Dijon have confirmed that, after a protracted series of negotiations, Gael Kakuta will be
joining the club for the remainder of the campaign. Over the last ten days, Chelsea have been
engaged in a series of loan discussions with both Dijon and Olympiakos.
After Vito Mannone moved to Hull on loan there was some suggestion that he had made available a
space for non homegrown players to arrive.
Unfortunately this isn't the case. For the 2011/12 season we named five homegrown players over
the age of 21, and 17 (the maximum allowed) non homegrown players.

* In terms of stupid statistics, the one that was frequently mentioned before the game yesterday -
that Arsenal hadn't won a league match against QPR in over a decade - was particularly stupid. They
haven't been in the prem for that long, that's why, not because they have some form of hex over us.
Giant leap
Since it's the last day of 2011, I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and may your target
and aspiration be achieved next year. While everyone gets into their own party mood, there's still
a game to be played for Arsenal with Queens Park Rangers visiting the Grove. The players will have
to keep their celebrations on hold as we look to go back to winning ways.

The QPR defender Armand Traore was convinced that his transfer across London from Arsenal to Loftus
Road was going to fall through after he played in Arsenal's 8-2 thrashing from Man Utd. Traore only
ever played 13 games in six years at Arsenal and he thought that his performance (and the team's)
against United would [.

QPR manager Neil Warnock has vowed to fine Armand Traore 'the most money that he possibly can'
after the left-back was sent-off in the final minute of the Hoops' 1-1 draw with Aston Villa for a
headlong, reckless lunge on Marc Albrighton.
The dismissal came minutes before Richard Dunne's unfortunate own-goal equaliser, with QPR 1-0
down and chasing the game as the clock ticked over into stoppage time and Warnock (who was seen to
grab Traore's arm and administer a few choice words as he made his way from the pitch) was not best
pleased with his players' conduct, telling the BBC after the game:
"I just thought he was a disgrace, I will fine him as much as I possibly can.

It's all change at the back for me as Kieran Gibbs seems to have lost his place to Andre Santos.
Who knows what is going on at Arsenal but the Brazilian did but up good points against Rovers, and
gets Bolton at home this week. Another flying (former) Arsenal fullback, Armand Traore, gets the
nod too.
Park Chu Young is still awaiting his visa
In his first ever press conference after transfer deadline day, Arsene Wenger disputed the
perception the 8-2 thrashing at the hands of Man Utd triggered the desperate last minute signing
spree.
Instead the process was more deliberative in the like for like calibration for departing
players.
Here's my mid-week attempt to assemble a squad for the upcoming weekend. The defence is largely
unchanged, with David De Gea, the wonderfully mellifluous Angel Rangel, and Matthew Briggs (though
John Arne Riise started and played an hour of Norway's 0-2 loss to Denmark yesterday). I have
brought in Armand Traore after his move to QPR.
Defensive dilemma for Deschamps, while Pastore saves the day for Kombuare
For the new season, MirrorFootball is teaming up with some of the blogosphere's best new writers

French Football Weekly's Andrew Gibney with his take on events across the Channel.
That was a very strange few days. We spend years carefully, slowly building squads, with obscure
players brought in from far and wide, punctuated with highly profitable sales. This modus operandi
became familiar to all of us. But in this transfer window, that has all been ripped up, culminating
in an insane final evening yesterday.
Final transfer deadline frenzy mania. Or in other words, something Arsenal hadn't seen in
years.
The transfer window has finally closed in England, and Arsenal fans got a taste of something
they hadn't eaten in a very long time: to the wire, last minute deals for first-team transfers. In
the very end, we got a plethora of deals that could just be enough to improve our season, most
notably the loan signing of Yossi Benayoun and the £10m signing of Everton's Mikel Arteta.
A quick round-up of where we stand on various transfers as we approach the final few hours of
the summer transfer window:
Ju Young Park was officially announced this afternoon, the arrival
means that the exit of Nicklas Bendtner is more probable, though nothing is
currently in place.
