'You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes.. you get what you need.' Harry has
sought advice from Mick Jagger to soothe the ruffled feathers of Spurs fans pining for 'Marquee'
signings. The words above proved prophetic when Gallas came in and more recently with the arrival
of Friedel and Parker which made even this Spurs diehard eat his words.
Pretty much. Unless you're a QPR fan, nothing worth knowing went down. Though fake stories,
false sightings of players on trains to [insert your city], and "Carlos Tevez to Aston Villa!!!"
twitter hoaxes were in abundance. If you are interested, that's fine. Our friends at The World's
Game summed up today's events succinctly enough.

The January transfer window is often a frenzied time with chairmen, managers and agents battling
against the clock to secure new players. As a result, many players who move during this period
often do so at over-inflated transfer fees and are hit-or-miss in terms of success.
No Sell No Buy (By S.H) With 11 days left in the Winter transfer season, Arsenal still haven't
signed anyone. Arsene Wenger, as we know, is verbally parsimonious and enigmatic about recruitment.
You'd never beat him in a board game of "Guess Who." There are a plethora of Arsenal transfer
rumours, linking a myriad of [.
This is a guest post from Arsenalbanter.com which is an interesting up-and-coming new Arsenal Blog.

('Dances with Wolves' dances with Wolves)We could have danced all night and still not scored the
winner against Wolves The JimmyG2 Column In this Bumper Edition a legend resurfaces; Wolves
recaptured; Man City fail to impress; transfer window ignored and all, like the National Health
Service, free at the point of delivery and we're still six points clear in third.
With just two weeks of the January transfer window left, Tottenham Hotspur yesterday made their
first signing. Iago Falque's loan from Juventus was made permanent for a fee rumoured to be around
£1.5m. The young Spaniard was immediately sent out on loan to Championship club Southampton.
Arsene Wenger said he doesn't expect to sign any new players during the rest of the January
transfer window and feels it should be scrapped anyway. Which is a little odd considering we just
saw Thierry Henry climb into Emirates Stadium through the window. If he sticks to his word, then
Gunner fans shouldn't expect to see the cavalry arrive in the nick of time to save the season from
sinking any further.
There's just under two weeks to go before the January transfer window closes and whilst it has been
a quiet month so far on the Sky Sports transfer tracker, with all the speculation brewing and the
needs of clubs becoming ever apparent as their seasons hang in the balance, don't be surprised to
see the [.
West London giants Chelsea have finally completed the signing of England centre back Gary Cahill
from fellow Premier League side Bolton Wanderers after a protracted transfer negotiation with the
player over personal terms. Having completed a medical examination at the weekend, Cahill now joins
Chelsea's star studded squad as they look to get their title challenge back on track - and at just
26 may be viewed by the club as a long term replacement for fellow England defender John Terry at
Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool are said to be monitoring Sporting Lisbon's Joao Teixeria and will hope a deal can be
struck this transfer window to bring him to Anfield.
The young midfielder will turn 19 this month and has put in some impressive performances for
Sporting Lisbon in the NextGen Series, scoring against Liverpool in Sporting's 3-0 victory.
Well it's that time of the year again when managers sit down and access his playing squad. With
injuries, suspensions and some players not living up to the reputations or price tags there should
be a few transfer dealings to help push Liverpool back into the top 4.

Liverpool loanee Joe Cole scored an impressive hat trick yesterday for Lille in the French Cup
against Chantilly. Lille went on to record a 6-0 victory.
Liverpool fans are still left wondering why he wasn't able to produce these sort of goals for us
last season, after he arrived with so much promise.

In celebration of January, In The Stands have chosen one player per Premier League side that we
believe will make a difference. Arsenal: What they need: With an improved defence in recent
weeks Arsenal may turn their attentions to another attacking midfielder to give Wenger increased
attacking option.
Arsenal 1-1 Wolves
Twenty-seven attempts on goal, eleven attempts on target, thirteen corners, one goal. Frustrating,
to say the least. The goals have dried up again at home (three in three league games – conceding
two in the process), giving Wenger a fresh headache to mull over as we head into the New Year.
Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou's imminent January departure for the African Cup of Nations,
along with the sale of Nicolas Anelka to Chinese Super League Club Shanghai Shenhua has left
manager André Villas-Boas facing a possibly head-scratching dilemma.
The loss of these three household names could force goal-shy Fernando Torres back in to the
equation at Stamford Bridge, a move which some would consider a risk.
In the years gone by, the left-back position at Arsenal was one of least bother. But after the
departure of Gael Clichy to Man City, the left side of defence has become something of a weak link
for the Gunners. Andre Santos is our only fit left-back at the moment. While the Brazilian's
attacking instincts [.
When Per Mertesacker arrived at Arsenal towards the end of the summer transfer window, he was
thought to be the ultimate solution for Arsenal's endless defensive issues. Standing at 1.98m and
possessing a great leaping ability, he can deal with the aerial threat of physical Premier League
teams, which has been a constant problem in [.
Shut the fucking door. El mercato has finally ceased, meaning we can finally get down to the
proper business of actually focusing on the football. I, for one, am ecstatic.
That's not to say the summer wasn't enjoyable. A tad chaotic and frustrating at times, yes, but
it certainly was an intriguing one for the club.
Happy Friday to you! With national team thoughts, Real Salt Lake/Philadelphia coming up and the
transfer window, here's whats on my mind for this Friday.
Jurgen Klinsmann and the National Team: Klinsmann is certainly making waves in the media
despite only being in charge only a month.
And so transfer deadline day came and went.
Celtic got a left back but not the nameless big name who cropped up in countless anonymous
rumours.
Rangers did nothing except turn down a big bid from a nameless big club in an anonymous rumour that
may or may not have come from someone who really should have scored in a cup final all those years
ago.
They're up for grabs now! Wenger, right at the end. An unbelievable climax to the
transfer window
I can safely say I can't recall the like. What began with the low of an abject eight-goal
capitulation at Old Trafford has ended with the high of five new faces to bolster the ranks.
Phew! It was that time again, and as per usual things were manic. We at In The Stands struggled to
keep up with all the kerfuffle and constant will-he-wont-he debacles. However, after much
journalistic endeavours, we have managed to finally pin down the most significant transfers on a
thoroughly exciting last day of the transfer window.
Liverpool concluded a productive transfer window with a late surprise when they...
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has dipped into the transfer market in a last gasp attempt to bolster
his already thin squad by securing the services of Brazilian fullback Andre Santos and Werder
Bremen defender Per Mertesacker... The official Arsenal website announced the signing of Werder

It's the Hope that kills you Above the Gates of Hell in Dante's 'Divine Comedy' are inscribed the
words 'Abandon all hope ye who enter here'. I'm paying to have it similarly placed above the Bill
Nicholson gates to White Hart Lane as that is my prediction for the nature of the coming season.
Now as all football fans and especially Tottenham fans know 'It's the hope that kills you'.
Frankly we got away with it: it could easily have been 8 on both sides of the north London
divide. By the time Spurs found a little of the good stuff, City had made and missed three good
chances. More opportunities came their way as the game progressed and they eagerly sliced through
our toiling, bewildered defence.
Joey Barton: QPR Sign Player from Newcastle on Free Transfer - originally posted on
Soccerlens.com
Queens Park Rangers have pulled off something of a major coup after Joey Barton was snapped up
on a free transfer from Newcastle United. The midfielder had had surprisingly announced the move on
Twitter late on Wednesday night and now he looks set to make his debut for QPR on September 12,
against his old team Newcastle.
In the early days of Tottenham On My Mind I wrote a piece characterising the relationship
between Harry Redknapp and his chairman. The title, Levy is Redknapp's Poodle, summed up their
dealings during their first summer transfer window together. At his previous clubs, Redknapp
ensured large sums of cash were at his disposal, even when at West Ham and Portsmouth that money
wasn't really there to spend.
I've been catching up with Carnivale, the US series about a carnival travelling through the
dustbowl during the Great Depression. It's compelling television but frankly not one to come home
to after a bad day, evoking as it does a picture of poverty and suffering that places little value
on human life.
The press continue to link Liverpool with more signings even after the capture of Jose Enrique
from Newcastle.
Various reports are circulating that we are preparing to bid £12mill + David Ngog for Bolton's
Gary Cahill. Who is believed to be avaliable if the "Right offer comes in".
Other reports are suggesting that we are after either one of Stoke's Ryan Shawcross or
Birmingham's Scott Dann.
The good news is that there isn't any bad news We started the window in the belief that 'no news
is good news' but now that the Modric and Harry sagas have stalled we are beginning to change our
attitude. The bad news though is that there is no actual good news. All our best players are still
with us; but so are all our not so best players too.

They say the mark of a good story is one that leaves you wanting more. It abandons you as you
slouch on your uncle's rocking chair, frothing at the mouth like a well-made milkshake. In
Hollywood, legions of screenwriters aim for this one stylised, and yet unique cessation to each
episode, each series.
Liverpool have been incredibly busy during this summer's transfer window, with...
If Seinfeld was famously the show about nothing, then Spurs are the Seinfeld of football, at
least for now.
In the past I've been relieved and grateful when things have gone quiet. I cherish rare moments
of peace and quiet to punctuate the bedlam of the season. No scandals or internecine arguments, the
media looking elsewhere, not to mention winning football matches.
As I write this, I'm on my way to a job interview. I'm happy with my current job but that's
often the best time to have a look round. This is a similar role but in a national private
corporation as opposed to the voluntary sector. I'll have greater responsibilities, a bigger
budget, more people to manage and a higher profile, which this stage of my career is a real
opportunity.
Focus being the key word right now as we are in a pivotal period for the club.
We know what happened last season and what we didn't achieve; now is the time to focus on our
future direction.
In order to do this, tough decisions will need to be made in the next few weeks.
When I was a kid, we didn't have much time for going out as a family. My dad had a small shop
that was open 12 hours a day, every day except Sunday when he closed at 2. Sometimes for a treat
he'd shut a few minutes early, scrawl a hurried apology on a paper bag that he would sellotape to
the glass shop door and we would escape for a few precious hours.
