It's a Sunday so you would expect at least some transfer speculation, and since a lot of it always seems to involve Newcastle, there is some news in the Sunday Mirror today that our own Dan Gosling may join Aston Villa in January. Dan Gosling in action at Europe this season The chances of [...]
The 2012 January transfer window was a rather more sedate affair than it's 2011 predecessor.
Money was spent much more sensibly this time around as opposed to being thrown around like a
compulsive gambler who had hacked into a free bets website.
Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez did not get a move away from the Etihad and Manchester
United did not break the bank to sign Wesley Sneijder.
Well, here we go again folks. After a summer of transfer speculation, internationals, some
signings, some sales and more rain than I would have liked, the new season kicks off today.
We start against Sunderland and we might as well get straight on with the team news. Out of
today's game are Laurent Koscielny (calf) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (ankle), while Arsene Wenger
will assess Theo Walcott who has a bruised gooch and Santi Cazorla who flew to Puerto Rico and back
with Spain during the week.
It's been a hectic day in the Premier League. First, Clint Dempsey is put up for sale by Fulham.
And then there's been a flurry of transfer speculation and deals being signed including Jose
Bosingwa heading from Chelsea to Queens ...

Liverpool could move for Team GB goalkeeper Jack Butland after the Birmingham City stopper
impressed the clubs scouts during Great Britain's match against UAE on Sunday night.
The Reds have been involved with transfer speculation almost everyday of late, most of it has
linked key players away from Anfield, so this will be a welcome boost for Pool fans.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made it known that he won't let the transfer speculation
surrounding the future of skipper Robin van Persie hurt the team's pre-season preparations,
insisting that he doesn't have any new updates on the forward.
Wenger's Gunners completed their tour of Asia with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Premier League
champions Manchester City yesterday but as they prepared for a return, the boss was once again
confronted with questions over the status of his captain.
The Euros are almost here, and with it distraction from the offseason doldrums and transfer
market lunacy. But they aren't here quite yet and Liverpool's had its manager sorted for a week
now. Which means it's beyond time for the club to be linked to 37,581 players who will never arrive
and half of whom nobody was previously aware existed.
There's less than a month to go in the season, and already a few supposed primary targets for
Liverpool Football Club have begun to take shape. Plus there's some potential good news for anybody
hoping the club might change their stance on the usefulness of players like Dirk Kuyt and Maxi
Rodriguez.
Against Blackburn, he scored twice in the opening twenty minutes in what should have been an
easy Liverpool victory. Against Everton in the FA Cup, Liverpool played the bulk of their best
football after he was brought on from the bench on 75 minutes. Yet despite that Liverpool have
consistently played better with him in the lineup than out of it, Maxi Rodriguez has only made
thirteen starts and a further four substitute appearances across the 47 games Liverpool has so far
played this season in all competitions.
After last weekend's capitulation to Newcastle on the heels of a frustrating series of results
against clubs lurking in the relegation zone, you probably wouldn't expect days filled with
positive news items. And you'd be right. Welcome to the suck...
* Ever since Jordan Hendrson arrived at the club and walked straight into the starting
eleven on the right, slotting in ahead of the previous season's scoring leader without having to
earn the role despite it being his less favoured position and that the man he was replacing remains
a regular for the Dutch national team, there has been a widespread belief that Dirk Kuyt's time at
the club has all but reached its end.
Transfer speculation surrounding Tottenham has hit something of a media frenzy in recent days
and the name of Moussa Dembele has appeared in the press once again this morning.
The 24 year old Belgian international has been at the heart of some good Fulham performances
under Martin Jol but that has only served to put the midfielder back under the transfer
spotlight.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has slammed Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger for publicly
accusing Reds striker Luis Suarez of diving, suggesting that the Frenchman should be charged by the
FA.
Dalglish has seen an eventful month at Merseyside go from celebrating Carling Cup glory to
losing back-to-back Premier League fixtures that have put his side on the verge of yet another
disappointing finish in the domestic standings.
In our last poll, we asked whether the club needed to sign a striker, winger, attacking
midfielder, or holding midfielder in the transfer window to shore up one of the areas of weakness
that had become apparent over the course of the 2011-12 season. An overwhelming majority of nearly
70% said that what the club needed more than anything was a striker, while 17% said winger, 8% said
attacking midfielder, and only 5% said holding midfielder.
While German giants Bayern Munich are busy calming down fans who are angered that the club's
commitment to unveil a major new signing today was simply a promotion for a new app, Liverpool
managing director Ian Ayre is making sure that the Kop's transfer expectations remain low, to begin
with.
English media has heavily linked Liverpool with the likes of Real Madrid's Esteban Granero,
Groningen's David Texeira, Rangers' Nikica Jelavic, and Udinese's Mauricio Isla.
All because Liverpool hasn't made a move yet in the transfer market doesn't mean that people
aren't saying they're about to. So join us for the latest fun-like substance as we run down the
latest collection of names being linked into—and out of—the club as the end of the January
window edges into sight.
Last summer, Liverpool rather famously spent big on players who created chances. To many, they
paid far too much for far too little and the results haven't lived up to the expenditure, but
regardless of whether one agreed with the approach at least there was a clearly identifiable
approach: Find the Premier League players who created the most scoring opportunities and then start
throwing money in their general direction.
As City wheel and deal in another transfer window, Samir Nasri falls further down the pecking
order. And he just joined. Think how early-adopter Wayne Bridge feels.
It's hard to watch several leagues simultaneously, which somewhat tempers the distaste for the
phenomenon of sugardaddied Manchester City and makes the team an intriguing entity to behold.
Sir Alex Ferguson had an "impromptu" interview with MUTV on Friday to respond to transfer
speculation that Manchester United had put in a bid for Robin van Persie. Unlike the usual tittle
tattle in the tabloids, that morning the BBC reported: "Arsenal have dismissed Manchester
United's bid for Robin van Persie, with offers from Manchester City and Juventus also short of
their valuation.
I've personally been writing about Spurs – on and off – for the last twenty years now and
can never remember a period where actual news has outstripped idle transfer speculation.
In the last week, we've had the confirmation of AVB as the new boss, together with confirmed
signings of both Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen.
TweetIt is almost the end of the season and with clubs looking to finish strongly May also brings
the much hyped transfer speculation which of course means exciting times for fans! Who will go
where? Who will sign who? Will your star striker hold the club hostage (again)? What about that
flashed-up number 10 who [.
In the summer Modric had his head turned by Chelsea with the promise of increased wages, and
Mancini's declaration of admiration has unsettled him once again. Croatia boss Slaven Bilic is the
man credited with promoting Modric, Corluka and Eduardo da Silva from the U21 team to the seniors,
so Luka has gone to speak to a trusted mentor and impartial voice to ask for his opinion on the
matter.
Everywhere you look at the moment, people are fretting over transfers. Will van Persie still be
here next season? What about Walcott's contract? Or Song's? Will M'Vila arrive, or Giroud, or maybe
some other stars that we so desperately need? And what about the clearout? We still haven't got rid
of anyone from that long list, surely we need to be getting on with it?
The Polish born German international, Lukas Podolski, has largely failed to live up to the hype
that encircled him during the 2006 Fifa World Cup. At that time, the powerful... Read more »
A poorly photoshopped vision of the future?
Not for a while at least. With Redknapp's office chair still warm, the media hyped player exodus
has picked up pace. Bale's agent, Jonathan Barnett has reportedly been doing the rounds in the
Spanish media. He told the newspaper that he is currently in talks with Levy about Bale's future
and that the lack of Champions League football is an issue as Bale looks to take the next step in
his career.
The VDVs As you may have noticed, the latest story to be doing the rounds in the British gutter
press is Van Der Vaart to Schalke.
You'll notice various English papers are quoting Van Der Vaart with this: "I don't want to say anything at the moment, as all my focus is on the European
Championships.
Alberto Aquilani made his 25th appearance of the season for AC Milan on the weekend, coming on
as an 85th minute substitute against Roma. Based on statements from the player's agent, this means
that the automatic transfer clause in his loan deal has now been triggered—Milan get the
midfielder, and Liverpool get around £5M spread over three annual instalments beginning this
summer.
In his press conference on Monday, Kenny Dalglish stated that Liverpool would not be buying any new
players during the January transfer window, and he was true to his word as no new players signed in
at Anfield last night. Transfer speculation is a normal and expected part of the month of January,
yet this cuts no ice with Dalglish, who once again blasted the press for daring to ask perfectly
A couple of weeks ago, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson claimed on BBC Radio 5 that the deal to
bring Darren Bent to Anfield was 'done', and despite several strong denials from Aston Villa, the
rumours about the prolific goalscorer just won't go away. Transfer speculation can sometimes
unsettle players, Villa winger Gabriel Agbonlahor insists this is not the case with Bent.
If you believe the rampant transfer speculation, 90% of the world's players are moving to Liverpool
in January. As usual, most of the rumours are nonsense, and Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has
stated several times that the club is not planning to sign anyone. Hopefully, that will not turn
out to be true, but here are nine transfer deals that definitely will not be happening.
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway always has nice things to say about Liverpool, but as his latest
comments show, he clearly holds some deep-rooted resentment towards the club over the transfer of
Charlie Adam.Writing in his column for The Mirror, Holloway suggested that the negative impact of
the transfer speculation over Charlie Adam actually contributed to his side's relegation last
season:"
Wednesday's friendly between the United States and Italy sees Parma's pint-sized playmaker
Sebastian Giovinco partner up with Juventus striker Alessandro Matri in what could be a preview of
great things to come. Giovinco, who is currently co-owned by Juve and Parma, is always a focus of
transfer speculation and his return to Juventus continues to be talked about.
Despite the city starting to slow down for the Chinese New Year, Shanghai Shenhua's PR machine
remains as busy as ever. The club's website is more brightly coloured than usual and images of the
new manager, Jean Tigana, and his star player, Nicolas Anelka, flicker across the screen whilst
behind them, four silhouetted figures stand in the background.

With Liverpool set to face Wolves on transfer deadline day, there was always some worry on our
end as to how we'd manage to fit in both match coverage and any last-minute transfer insanity.
Turns out that the club and Kenny Dalglish were fully sympathetic to our concerns, as today the
official site put out a brief statement from Dalglish that under no circumstance will any new
senior players be brought in before midnight in Paris on Tuesday.
Brek Shea's season could not be straying any further from how most thought it would unfold.
After a year full of U.S. men's national team appearances and an offseason filled with European
transfer speculation and a training stint at Arsenal, Shea has struggled to meet the lofty
expectations bestowed upon him and has had his standing as a rising American star and transfer
candidate take a step back.
Regular readers of my efforts for this blog will know that, like many other United fans, I place
little credence in 90% of the stories which appear in the media about who is leaving and who is
joining our illustrious club. There is so much media "noise" going on at the moment about
movements, and [..
We currently sit marooned in the post season pre European Championships no man's land. It's
sometimes a bit crazying to watch my fellow inhabitants of this post apocalyptic wasteland roaming
the thunder dome for scraps of tumbleweed with which to forge transfer speculation – desperately
looking to fuse liquid gold from its drying spores.
