Farewell Dean Ashton, Thanks For The Memories!

The Flat Back Four 18 November @ 01:04 PM EST
After almost three injury-ravaged years, Dean Ashton, as the back pages suggest, will finally hang up his boots and retire. The player who was once seen as a unique cross between the playing styles of Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham, will never fully fulfill his potential as a top-class footballer. Player Reviews Nyassi and Wahl

Sounder at Heart - Soccer From the Heart of the Sound 16 November @ 08:40 PM EST

I have referred to these two as Substitutes in my tiering of Starter, Rotational, Substitute and Reserves, but honestly, Nathan Sturgis likely belongs here as well. All three are almost always on the available bench, but rarely see time. In Sanna's case he is still quite young, just entering the years where he would make or break in the US system.

Rest of the Reserves - Graham, Scott, Sturgis, King

Sounder at Heart - Soccer From the Heart of the Sound 15 November @ 08:50 PM EST

Now we start entering the realm of players with playing time. Of guys that may have value to other clubs in trade, and quite possibly seeing the guy that Philadelphia takes in the Expansion Draft later this month. This collection of players are in two sets.

The first set are two USL Sounders, and the second two players are young talents with promise, but who have lacked the playing time to showcase their reputations in competitive matches.

The Other Keepers

Sounder at Heart - Soccer From the Heart of the Sound 14 November @ 01:16 PM EST

As in the guys that aren't Mr Kasey Keller. Due to injuries Keller played essentially all competitive matches. Next year with the potential for a dozen more matches in the season and Kasey passing 40 in just a few days the back-up keeper will be much more important. While he does feel healthier at the end of this season than in the past, he made many statements that it was due to the nature of MLS playing basically once a week.

Neglectful FA cost Chelsea dear during latest pointless England excursion

bridge views 13 November @ 05:55 AM EST

How many international breaks have there been this season already? It seems like time and again the Premiership season has been disturbed by a string of international fixtures this year, many of which have been friendlies. The latest England jolly to Doha for a friendly with Brazil may have cost Chelsea a high price.

Lightly Used Developmental Players

Sounder at Heart - Soccer From the Heart of the Sound 11 November @ 11:50 AM EST

These are the young gentleman who saw time against Chelsea and Barcelona, and sparse minutes during the Open Cup, but did not see time in league play. Impressions of these players are strongest for those that have the opportunity to see practice, or have talked to those that have. As Developmental Players their small contracts don't count against the cap, but they also tend to have second jobs as well.

Revisiting the ADRs

DCUMD 30 October @ 06:10 PM EST
When posting the 2009 ADRs earlier this week, I asked what jumped out at you. Well here's some questions that jumped out at me:
1. Is Dejan Jakovic really all that good? The biggest surprise for me on the whole was Jakovic's even 3.00 rating. After winning three Benny Awards, you would have thought his rating would be among the best on the team. Click to continue reading...

Simoes calls up some Under-20s

HexagonalBlog 30 October @ 01:36 PM EST
As I expected, René Simões has promoted some players from Costa Rica's U-20 side to the senior team for the big playoff against Uruguay. The inclusion of Bryan Oviedo was not a surprise, as he was one of the Ticos' best players in Egypt. The selections of Mena and Gamboa indicate that Simões wants to bolster his defensive unit, especially in the central positions. Click to continue reading...

Internationals are Over, Let the Season Start

Arsenal News News News 11 September @ 08:00 AM EST

The international break is over and we resume with the real football. I have stated before FIFA needs to address the international football calendar. We cannot have a stop start season, any rhythm that teams have is disrupted. I would prefer a break in October or 2-3 weeks and another in March, allowing all internationals to be crammed into these periods.

I hate international breaks

The Goon Blog - an Arsenal blog. 06 September @ 07:33 AM EST

I don't see why they should occur so soon in the season, the players had one round of stupid internationals just before the season started and now there are more.

The only things that ever comes out of them are injuries. Proof: Djourou was sent home from his Swiss training camp in the last international break and now has to undergo surgery on his knee.

The Truth About Franck Ribery

La Liga Report 04 September @ 07:25 AM EST

Often in sports athletes lie. Not necessarily in an evil step-sister type of way, but simply to cover their own hyde. Usually when a player says that they are happy with their current deal, but are awaiting a new offer that really means "Pay me or I am ready to leave." Or if a player claims to be injured in training camp that really means "I'm out of shape and don't want to work out this week.

The Weekend in Context: Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Major League Soccer Talk 10 August @ 08:14 AM EST
