Teerathep Winothai was supposed to be the latest in a long line of talented Thais to make an
impression on the game beyond their own borders. But his highly publicised move to Lierse SK in
Belgium never really worked out and he returned to Thailand with Muang Thong United who farmed him
out to BEC Tero.
Football is supposed to be a glamourous career. Scoring goals in front of adoring fans and all that
crap. Not if you're name is Khairul Amri it ain't though.
The poor bastard spends most of his time injured. He's 27 in March, should be at the peak of his
powers but guess what? He's gonna be out for the next 12 weeks with another injury.
Thailand lost to a South Korea team yesterday in the King's Cup. I have no idea which South Korea,
it certainly weren't the first team and they didn't even include the Arsenal striker Park, but
anyone the Thais played them and got beat 3-1.
Coach Winnie Schaefer after the game said the Thai team weren't very fit.
Incompetence over fixture scheduling is an ASEAN speciality. The Indonesians have long led the
field, and now there are two leagues there we get to see double the incompetence.
Lately the Thais want their turn. The current Thai Premier League began in March and there have
been so many changes to the schedule I think everyone has forgotten when it was originally slated
to end.
Read a tweet from my timeline that goes like this before the Indonesia-Malaysia SEA Games match
after the Cubs defeated the supposedly perennial powerhouses Thailand 2-0.
"This is e first (and probably will be e only) time a 2-0 win
over Thailand feels like a defeat..."
Can't blame that sense of pessimistic when the Cubs initially failed in achieving the target that
mammoth task of four goals against the Thais because the goal difference between them and the
Malaysians, whom they defeated the hosts to progress to the semi-finals.
2007 seems a long time ago. That was the last time Thailand won the SEA Games, a competition they
had come to view as one they were entitled to win. After all, 2007 was their 8th consecutive
triumph, a run dating back to 1993.
No more. They were humiliated in 2009, failing to get past the group stage for the first time in
yonks conceding late goals in a draw against Vietnam and, crucially, the deciding game against
Malaysia when the eventual winners scored in injury time.
Thailand desperately want to win back the football gold medal after they were embarrassingly
eliminated in the first round of the previous tournament in Laos in 2009.
In their final group game in Vientiane, eight-time defending champions Thailand only needed to
avoid defeat against Malaysia to progress.
Several weeks back it was aging AC Milan buggers hitting Jakarta, and Bali, in the name of a good,
free, holiday plus an exhibition football match with plenty of hugging and back slapping thrown in
for good measure, pandering to the masses.
Now, with the Thai Premier League limping to a slow and much delayed climax comes news that a bunch
of aging Germans will be having a free holiday, will be slapping their thighs in public and also
kick a ball around, expecting others to dig deep into their pockets in the name of charity.
Indonesia v Qatar 2-3 (Christian Gonzales 2) 28,000Singapore v Jordan 0-3 3,799Thailand v Saudi
Arabia 0-0 42,000
OK so Indonesia and Singapore can forget about a trip to Brazil in 2014 following defeates to
Middle Eastern nations while the Thais sit second in their group two points ahead of the Saudis but
face two away games to complete the group.
Rare indeed is there a pre season when Persib Bandung don't link themselves with one Thai player or
another. Sinthaweechai Hathairatnakul of course had two spells with the team while Suchao Nutnum's
brief time is fondly remembered by the Persib faithful.
Recent days have seen BEC Tero striker Teeratep Winothai linked with the club and now we have this
story suggesting Kiatprawut Saiwaeo is interesting them.
Indonesia v Bahrain 0-2
Well, that's that then. Indonesia's World Cup ambitions have been shelved for another four years
after this disappointing performance against a Bahrain side who were that yard quicker throughout
the game both with their feet and their brains. Coach Rijsbergen won't have been happy with the way
the goals were conceded.
China v Singapore 2-1 (Duric) 17,000
The Lions took the lead in Kunming through the oh so reliable Aleksander Duric on 33' and hopes
were high they could secure a famous victory. But substitute Zheng Zhi equalised with a penalty
just two minutes after coming on to set up a nail biting climax and four minutes later Yu Hai gave
the Chinese a slender lead.
Thailand play Palestine in their World Cup Qualifier Second Leg knowing that their 1-0 lead is no
way near enough. The shot shy Thais have been notorious for their inability to turn their silky
build up play in to goals and new coach Winifred Schaeffer found out the hard way in the 1st
leg.
As if that ain't enough the Thais may face a further handicap.
1st Leg
Singapore v Malaysia 5-3Turkmenistan v Indonesia 1-1Thailand v Palestine 1-0
Not good for the Thais is it? The slenderest of leads to take to the middle east, defeat against
Palestine would cap a memorable period in Thai football, coincidentally under FA boss Worawi
Makudi, when they have failed in the SEA Games, the Asian Cup, the AFF Cup and now this?
For many 2009 was the year Thai football came of age. It was no longer the league of corporate
and state acronyms. PAT, SET, KTB, PEA and such like were being consigned to the pages of history
and a new breed of club was coming to the fore. Led by Chonburi these were clubs that sought to
create links with their local community and draw on that local community for their support.
Thailand's U23 Olympic squad overcame their Malaysian counterparts by two goals to one in a
friendly match at Rajamangala Stadium on Thursday evening. Both managers used the game to take a
look at their players ahead of the 2012 Olympic qualifying campaign that begins later in the
year.
Chayanan Phombuppha put the Thais in front after a quarter of an hour, a lead they held until the
71st minute when Ibrahim scored for the visitors.
Thailand have named a 30 man training squad in preparation for the first round of the 2012 Olympic
qualifiers. The group, including Thai Port defender Todsapol Lated, meet up today (Jan 17th) at
Thammasat Rangsit Center.
The Thais will take on Palestine in a two-leg play-off, with the games to be played on February
23rd (home) and March 9th (away).
