Nevermind that the Copa Del Rey trophy pre-Sergio Ramos looks far more elegant to the gangly and grotesque-looking La Liga trophy (complete with studs) – winning La Liga is still the ultimate proof that Barcelona this season were the better team.

Cristiano Ronaldo set a new La Liga single-season scoring record with his 39th and 40th of the campaign for Real Madrid against Almeria.

He notched his first after four minutes and his second on 77 as Real thumped their already-relegated opponents 8-1.

His double meant he moved two clear of the previous mark, which he jointly held with Real's Hugo Sanchez and Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra.

38 or 39, does it really matter? No! But to the Madristas or fanatical MARCA journalists it certainly does; that debate can take place elsewhere. A player who has scored 52 goals in 53 season appearances is sensational and that's a word which can describe Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo superó las performances de Telmo Zarra (1950/51, Athletic Bilbao) y Hugo Sánchez (1989/90, Real Madrid), ambos con 38 goles en temporada.
