Another Tweet and Fly with Robb Heineman

Sporting KC's Robb Heineman gave another one of his Q&As on Twitter tonight, another #TweetnFly time as Heineman made his way down Tucson to observe some preseason there.

As expected, one of the topics that brought out the most questions was the current roster and fan concern over the loss of Krisztian Nemeth to Qatar.

MLS and U.S. Television

Evidenced by last week's assigned reading by Andrei Markovitz (The Other "American Exceptionalism" Why Is There No Soccer in the United States?), individuals have long been debating the reasons for the U.S.'s lack of interest in soccer. One of the statements made in Markovitz' 1988 article struck me, as he wrote that "soccer's marginal existence as a major spectator sport in contemporary America has probably a lot more to do with its inability to land a long-term television contract with one of the major networks, than with it being 'crowded out' by baseball 'from below' and football 'from above'" (Markovitz, 1988:145).

Tonight while on his way to Orlando, Robb Heineman did another one of his impromptu Twitter Q/A's. As always, there were a number of lighthearted questions and some trolling, but there were some good questions in there as well that he answered.

One of the early questions that Heineman was asked had to do with the team adding players to the current squad.

Television ratings for Major League Soccer are stagnant and have been for years. Despite improved numbers since the switch from Fox to NBC, (which can largely be explained by the number of additional households in which the NBCSN is available), soccer remains well below the other major sports in television success.

MLS commissioner Don Garber thinks there's too much of his sport on American television. Way too much. And no, he's not being sarcastic.

He made the poorly phrased claim while speaking to the Associated Press Sports Editors and to avoid headlines like the one above, it probably should've come out a bit different.
