Wednesday turned into a day for announcements from CONCACAF, with the region's governing body
finalizing a deal for television coverage of the Men's and Women's 2012 Olympic Qualifying
tournaments. The tournaments will be available in Spanish on Telemundo with Universal Sports
Network showing games involving the US teams and the finals in English.
The big news last week was the announcement that FOX was awarded the English language rights to
the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. FOX outbid NBC and ESPN to claim the rights for approximately
$400 million dollars. The Spanish language rights were won by Telemundo for an estimated $400
million.
Fifa has awarded the exclusive US media rights to all Fifa World Cup events from 2015 to 2022 to
Fox and NBC Universal's Telemundo Media in deals reportedly worth more than a billion dollars
The most interesting team in Mexico CitySome may say that being a CONCACAF super
club is akin to being the tallest midget. To those negative nelly's we say... yeah, you're probably
right. That being said, Mexico City's Pumas UNAM is one of the region's biggest and most storied
clubs and when they roll into town they do carry some clout.
