How could the USL outwit, outplay & outlast the MLS in the 2008-09 CONCACAF
Champions League?
The answer is simple!
The level of play in the USL (as an alternative league) is
closer to that of the MLS, than many (in the USSF and MLS) would like to admit
to.

It is that time again. Late July into the start of August. For a few Major League Soccer clubs
it means their schedule is about to get a little more jammed. Columbus and Houston have to wait to
find out who is in their groups for CONCACAF Champions League play while New York and DC United
begin their quest to save face for the league in the play-in rounds tonight (DC) and on Thursday
(NY).

The inaugural CONCACAF Champions League is now over after a short delay, due to swine flu.
Atlante are the first evcer CCL Champions, and will be the region's representative at this year's

It was a sad ending to a great story. A team puts the Islanders out of the
CONCACAF Champions League (CCL).
Cruz Azul lead the Islanders 2-0 after 90 minutes to tie the aggregate, even though the Aztecs
were a man down for the last 59 minutes of regular time, to send the series into overtime.

Cruz Azul hosts Saprissa in what is probably the best game of this round tonight. The other Group A
game is tomorrow night as DC travels to Honduras to face Marathon. I hope their defense learns how
to stop a counterattack between now and then, otherwise the Green Monster is going to kill
them...
Houston makes their debut in the group stage, traveling to Panama to face San Francisco.

Quick responses to the CONCACAF Champions League results from last night...
- Puerto Rico just keeps on keeping on, doing what Chivas USA couldn't do with a 2-1 home win
over Tauro of Panama. WHO WILL STOP THE ISLANDERS??? We'll see when they play Atlante...
- I knew DC was in trouble when I saw the starting lineup.

Two embarassing results for Majore League Soccer in the CONCACAF Champions League happened
yesterday. Last years MLS Cup runners up and the Western Conference champions both dropped
out of the regional tournament yesterday.
The New England Revolution lost 0-4 at home to Joe Public of Trinidad and Tobago.

Two MLS clubs entered the CONCACAF Champions League preliminary rounds expecting to advance to the
group stages. But after a home and away series both New England and Chivas USA were outed worse
than anyone could have imagined. New England lost on aggregate to Trinidad side Joe Public 6-1.
OUCH. Chivas lost on aggregate to Panamanian side [.

Below are the collated results for the Preliminary Round of the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League.
Ties are a two-match, home-and-away series, higher aggregate score wins, and away goals count. If
aggregate and away goals are level, a 30-minute extra time period is played with penalties if
necessary.

The end of Chivas USA's participation in the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League effectively
came in the 62nd minute when Luis Moreno equalized to tie this game 1-1.
But that put the score 3-1 on aggregate meaning Chivas USA needed not two goals (because away
goals count double in the event of a tie), but three more goals within a half hour to move on.

A couple more preliminary matches in the CONCACAF Champions League tonight, both involving MLS
squads. New England Revolution and Chivas USA play host to Joe Public and Tauro FC,

Both New England Revolution and CD Chivas USA have made their work harder with losses away to Tauro
FC and Joe Public. Tonight, they get to return the favor or risk elimination. Both games will be
shown on Fox Soccer Channel, and Galavision (check your local listings and check back here around
8pm Eastern as we may have a feed).

MLS teams wouldn't lose meaningful series against teams from Panama and Trinidad and Tobago,
would they?
We'll find out tonight. Both MLS teams trail after the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions
League preliminary round.
Here's the situation:
New England Revolution vs. Joe Public FC (T&T) in Foxboro, Mass.

Chivas USA will host a critical match against Tauro FC tonight. Chivas USA needs to win by two
goals in order to have any hopes of advancing to the CONCACAF Champions League.
Here is audio of my post-game chat with Jonathan Bornstein about the game.
Acutally, it's a bit more complicated than just winning by two.

I'm trying to crank out my PE column tonight so I don't have to worry about it on Monday morning,

qualifying.

New England, the best team supposedly in MLS, got beat by a team called Joe Public F.C. (no joke!),
a side from Trinidad and Tobago.
Hopefully they were playing reserves.
Chivas USA didn't do much better, losing 2-0 to Tauro F.C., the Panamanian champs. Puerto Rico got
a point, but I'm not sure how much credit the U.

Not a good night for Major League Soccer on the international scene. Two games on foreign soil and
two very ugly losses. Chivas loses in Panama to Tauro 2-0. New England loses in Trindad to Jack

For all practical purposes the first matchday of the CONCACAF Champions League is over (Cruz Azul
hasn't finished their game yet), but there are several things we can learn.
1. Never bet on a Belizian (I have no idea of that's right) team, especially if they play Cruz
Azul. The game is not over yet, but Cruz Azul should advance from this night with a considerable
aggregate lead, they currently lead 5-0.

The time has come for North America's answer to their European counterpart. The Champions League
begins tonight. In this space I will rank and give a brief preview of the eight preliminary
matchups. Several of the teams come from leagues that have played internationally very little over
the past few years, so those teams will be unranked.
